As technology continues to accelerate change, will the traditional college model be able to keep up? Why might college no longer be worth it for many of our nation’s kids, and what might they consider doing instead? Jason Lange is the Co-Founder and President of BloomBoard, an education technology company focused on empowering educator success through personalized, competency-based learning. Prior to founding BloomBoard, Jason worked in finance as an investment banking Analyst and then as a private equity Associate before going to graduate school. While in graduate school, Jason worked as a Summer Associate at NewSchools Venture Fund, where he supported the development of the initial edtech investment thesis for the NewSchools Seed Fund (now Reach Capital). Jason received a BA in psychology and philosophy from Yale University, an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, and an MA in Education from Stanford University School of Education. I worked very hard from day one in school and took a Math, Statistics and Economics based on scholarships, aptitude tests and earning ability. I wanted a rigorous education that would pay dividends and definitely wanted nothing to do with weird ideas about socialism and special programs and such. It seems to me we need to be training kids to earn and not giving kids educations to where they return home and live with parents for another decade looking for employment and income. Maybe this generation can say they worked hard in school but life was unfair so now they ask government for assistance. But what about their kids and their grandchildren. Which kids are going to have an advantage in the future. The children of Business executives and government leaders or the kids where parents go to college only to work in some unskilled factory job somewhere? We will lose our whole country if we fail to raise a generation of citizens who learn but do not earn. I keep thinking myself, what value is my education if I cannot earn and what is it I do not know? Some people have suggested slavery ... For me... well, if you like my post Send money!

Thank you for watching my talk! We can hope that the education system changes to focus more on the skills necessary for earning, or (more likely, IMO) we will end up in a situation where employers simply go around the education system to build the pipeline of talent themselves. It's still too early to know how it will play out, but I don't think it will take too many years to shift fairly dramatically.

College Debt Slavery-on kindle, very few degrees are worth it in this day and age.

Great talk. Well delivered and well said... Unfortunately every decent paying job out there seems to still demand a college degree. Capitulation to college vs merrit of individual competancy - and look where that has brought our society...

Hun Ya Well there also other decent job that doesn't need a college degree. The only decent jobs that I think you need a degree is a doctor, lawyer, engineer, teacher, scientist. But not all of us are intelligent enough to be in these profession. Beside that all of the other degree are worthless. Beside why do you need a job? I mean why do you need to work for someone else. Why not open your own business?

Well, there are jobs that pay well and don't require a degree. Lots of Blue Collar jobs pay very today due to a high demand in the fields. There are also lots of jobs that require at least an Associate's Degree that lay well also. Of course, when you mean by degree, I assume you mean a Bachelor's degree. I do agree with you that this whole problem of over credentialism in America has gone out of hand. I don't believe every job really requires a degree. Some job can just be taught through a Trade or simply on the job. I think one of the problems is probably the laziness of employers as well.

@@infamouscrusader3363 Would you say that animation or the show writing industry is one of those that need a 4-year degree or an associate's? (I would say I'm asking for a friend but really I'm asking for myself since my parents have pidgin holed me into college...)

College is only worth it if you value out of the experiences and want to impress employers. I have went to college on and off for 11 years and it’s been some of my best and worst experiences at the same time. In my country a lot of employers won’t higher without a degree. Based on my experience it is a bit of both. It can’t be college alone and it can’t be just work experience or self learning it needs be a mix.

I totally agree with you. it can't be just self learning. you need to connect to the outside world . going to college and join some big name tech company is the way to connect with the outside world.
