Explore the intriguing concept of the Law of Jante in this thought-provoking TED Talk. Delve into whether this cultural phenomenon is a blessing or a curse for Scandinavian society. Uncover the societal implications and deep-rooted values associated with the Law of Jante. Join the discussion and gain a fresh perspective on this unique aspect of Scandinavian culture. Lovisa is an undergraduate student at SSE, currently working on her thesis and expecting to graduate this spring. During her time here, she has engaged with a variety of projects and committees, the most prominent SASSE role being that of President of the Education Committee. Other memorable endeavors are working on SSE's CIVICA Management Team, as well as receiving the Gun and Einar Larsson Scholarship to create and execute an entrepreneurship training program in Ghana-all of which, together with studying abroad before enrolling at SSE and a love for traveling, have mounted to form her interest in culture, psychology, and the combination therebetween. As such, she intends and would love to pursue an academic career within the field of social psychology, starting with the scrutiny of the trademark Scandinavian social construct: the Law of Jante. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

great tedx talk i find so many other moral ethical codes in other stories, religion, art, movies etc that can easily replace the law of jante (in scandanavia) and that is not based on jealousy and fear of others succes.

The fact that famous bands, musicians and artists that came from Scandinavia were freely shat on by the media and public following major international success is a big reason this is an issue. If this was followed blindly by everyone, nobody can be proud of their origins or hard work. And I think that as a worldwide community, us humans need to lift each other's spirits and compliment each other. You can teach how to be humble and learn the right ways without being this insanely intense as a "Law".

This exists in Finland also. I experienced it with women I was meeting and dating. Some of them had an instant chip on their shoulders when they learned I was "American." And they seemed to have this new pressing need to be derisive and condescending.

For most Norwegians we're "forced" to learn about the law of Jante. It's kinda eff'd us all up psychology, but it's also helped on crime and everyone is really nice towards each other, which is nice.

I am surprised by this attempt to undermine an aspect of Norwegian society that probably has kept it safe from phenomena like toxic narcissism, which is so visible in many other Western cultures. From overpaid CEOs to the glorification of the Kardashians - these are unintended consequences of overemphasizing individualism. Unlike these cultures, Norway has a strong emphasis on collective well-being and modesty, largely due to cultural norms like 'Janteloven,' which discourage individual boasting and prioritize societal harmony.

Also, I think it's naive to think that in places like the USA people do not experience satisfaction seeing other people face setbacks or losing status...

Then shouldn’t we push to be more collectivist like countries like Japan or Korea or is the rule of Jante hitting that sweet spot

Good question. My previous comment was influenced by thoughts on societal well-being and wealth disparities. While I recognize that my perspective may be shaped by my Polish upbringing, I do not endorse cultural relativism. I believe there's an ideal balance, possibly even surpassing the rule of Jante. From an external viewpoint, Norway's stewardship of its sovereign fund seems prudent, although I understand that some Norwegians might hold differing views. Essentially, I am not sure... Criticizing the video was straightforward, but providing a constructive viewpoint proves more challenging. The only aspect that truly resonates with me in response to your question is Joshua Bach's observation about humanity's aim to engage in the longest possible game. In my opinion, Norway is performing decently in this regard @@simonpetrikov3992

I don't think it's narcissistic to believe you have value and are allowed to be different. Nor do I see any reason conformism is a prerequisite for egalitarianism (it seems to me the opposite is true: conformism is the majority "us" declaring (or at least strongly implying) superiority over the minority "them". Look at past incidents of racism, religious persecution, and other scapegoating for ample human evidence that sacrificing the rights of the individual for social cohesion leads to injustice.

First, the rules are from a book from the 1930's, they perhaps get some part of Scandinavian countries' culture right, but it is not something that is learned by every kid when they grow up. However, some laws are more observable than others, and I think the positive value that could be derived from the laws is to be humble. I think if e.g. Wall Street had operated in a society where the law of jante was more prevalent, it would have been a better world.

Dear Lovisa, you might want to take a look at the situation and statements of the German government as they individualize one of the largest world economies into the ground. To me Janteloven seems like the glue that keeps individuals , societies, economies and regions aligned in pursuing a greater good - rather than having multiple groups and individuals pulling into different conceptual directions.

yes we can see that today right? How we all live in peace together? Jante advocates for citizens and the population to submit to authority... It's an invisible control ingrained in every native Scandinavian, which might seem odd to outsiders because of the perception that 'everyone has equal rights,' which is so highly valued. However, there's little discussion about the issues and structures regarding how one adheres to the Jante mindset.

Thanks for replies, maybe jantelaagen is not perfect, but people need some boundaires, otherwise people always want more... which is not the ultimate happiness, i believe there should be some rules binding people needs in favour of binding society, my society had lost the moral code, and now it has none, american false dream constantly clashing with conservative moral code and religious minders

I've been to Norway, and Sweden, and I'll tell you the people there were the nicest and the place was the most organized, if the law of Jante is the reason for this then I'll take it! The law of Jante promotes egalaterism, and the speaker here would rather Scandinavia be filled with narcissistic self centered capitalists like Donald Trump and Jeff Bezos while others suffer.
