Personal Plants are plants office people get to have on or close to their desk, and that they have a relationship with. It is a concept that was arrived at almost accidentally by Mike's wife Suzanne.
The talk is the story of the introduction of Personal Plants to their 12 person Engineering business 5 years ago. It includes research results from the scientific community and Mike's own investigations. The results show how a gain in office productivity of 20% to 40% at a very minimal cost is a realistic expectation for almost any office. Mike Robinson was born on a sheep farm in New Zealand. He and his wife Suzanne both worked for the NZ Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Mike as a Research Engineer designing farm buildings and wind fences for kiwifruit. In 1997 they shifted to Aldergrove, Canada where they now own WeatherSolve Structures, an international designer and supplier of industrial wind fence and hail canopy systems. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is so interesting a makes a lot of sense! Many years ago I arrived in British Columbia with 2 small children, two weeks worth of clothes and a bag of Lego. Over the next few months we settled down, found a home and began to furnish it with furnishings purchased at auctions and yard sales. It was during one of these outings I met a kind elderly lady who told me when you begin in a new home it is important to have a special plant. For $1.00 she sold me what she called "a shamrock" to bring a sense of gentleness into my home. Moving ahead 34 years later...I still have that plant and throughout the years have shared pieces of it with everyone I knew who moved into a new home... I have since learned it is called a wood sorrel...and I believe it did bring a sense of of gentleness into our home. Since that time I have discovered that plants have an essence of their own...In my research I discovered the plant I had was actually a "Wood Sorrel " and when research on the web I found that it helps us know our own value and the power of the light within us when we feel small or insignificant. It helps us identify with the eternal divine part of ourselves no matter what is going on around us and no matter what people are saying to us. It helps us find an unwavering calm in even the most intense or overwhelming situations. Who would have know that that gentle lady was so in tune to the life of plants! Not only is in important to have a personal plant in your office but I believe we should also find personal plants in our homes too! Wonderful talk Mike... Thank You!

Love the content but the mic picked up every tiny little breath and weird lip smack and that made it almost impossible to listen to.

I greatly enjoyed listening to your talk on plants. Years ago a friend told me of a book he had read called "The Secret Life of Plants" and how fascinating it was (I got it through our public library system here in the U.S. (maybe it's available elsewhere, I highly recommend reading it). So listening to your talk prompted me to put one of my "Mother In Laws Tongue" plants (which was not far from my table here, but not so much in my view and I've just tidied up some space for it. Thank you for sparking again my interest in plants!
