When is the time for freedom? Is it ok to keep intelligent, ocean-going beings in small concrete tanks? Ingrid is a cetacean (whale) biologist, world-renowned for her work with orca. She has researched, observed, photographed, surveyed, championed, lectured-on and rescued orca here in New Zealand and across our globe, from Antarctica to Alaska.
To help promote research, as well as provide platforms for conservation, Ingrid has founded cetacean-orientated non-profit organisations at both national and international level.
“I am passionate about protecting marine mammals, particularly orca - and about education for the public and inspiring them to make a difference themselves. The best thing that happened for me last year? I rescued a stranded orca and spent time free-swimming with them in the wild.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The American company mentioned is (quite obviously) SeaWorld, and the Spanish facility is Loro Parque in Tenerife. Thought I would share for anyone interested, since Dr. Visser clearly could not call the companies by name due to some rule.

Ingrid is a amazing person her knowledge on Orca's and how she shares her knowledge with us is very cool. Its the saddest thing known that killer whales are like us but live in the water and they've been captured to perform for money and being in captivity they go crazy. I hope one day all of the Orca's that are in captivity will have there chance to live in a sanctuary and experience some sort of freedom.

She has done so much to advance our knowledge of these amazing animals. I live in Florida and because the water is so warm here all we have around out there are sharks.. no Orca. And my first knowledge of them was highly misconstrued until we visited Shamu at Sea world when my children were small. I was horrified but my children loved getting wet by her/him (at the time I did not know that this wasn't the original animal). After this many years later I ran across Luna's story and THAT'S when I first became aware of Dr Visser's work. In Luna's day humans didn't actually swim with him but somewhere along the line Dr Visser discovered an incredible relationship with these magnificent entities and I've been following her work (and rescues) ever since.

Thank you so much for you work, Dr. Visser 🙏 I used to be afraid of Orcas and many other sea animals (afraid of the water in general), but fear was not far away from fascination for me and through education i was able to learn more and fall in love with these animals. I'm not afraid of them anymore :) Even though i haven't seen any of them irl, they mean a lot to me and i appreciate someone doing something and advocating and working for them, so Thank you!

It is heartbreaking to love whales so much for their intelligence and empathic abilities; the same qualities that lead to their being "pimped for peoples entertainment". To see their suffering, not just in captivity with orcas and dolphins, but all cetaceans with ship strikes, fishing gear entanglements, noise pollution, or general pollution. I hope there's a breakthrough in translating their communication for those who dont seem to already recognize their cognitive level. Blackfishs' impact has faded. Supposedly Seaworld has seen an uptick in sales recently. In 2012 there was a bigger push to solidify some form of non-human rights for cetaceans. I believe in India they actually do have such standing.

Id love for Lolita to be there, and have an opportunity to be in contact with other Orca after years without any real companionship. (the other dolphins dont count their not ORCA like her) Or even to have even a slight chance to be in some contact with her mother who im sure thinks her baby to be gone forever. Plus of all the scientific opportunities to see how Lolita would do with meeting her family after such a long time and prove how great their memories are and that for wild caught orcas its possible to be reintroduced to the wild like with Springer and Keiko. Though i think the greatest issues with Keiko (and Luna) were how attached he was to humans and that we couldnt identify his mother like we can with Lolita

Orca are part of the dolphin family, so Lolita is a dolphin, not a whale. However, introducing her to other Orca has to be a carefully controlled process. They tend to get aggressive with those they are not familiar with. If they ever free Lolita (which I doubt they'll do, sadly)....and decide to put her with others, it will have to be a slow transition. Can't just throw her in with any old Orca. And truth be told, dolphins communicate in similar ways....it may be that she can communicate with the dolphin around her and vice versa. Not that it justifies anything. She has always deserved her freedom and the company of her own group. It says so much about the selfishness of human beings that she hasn't yet gotten that freedom or company.

No I think Lolita will adapt better. Cause if I remember correctly she knows her pod's dialect. She was taken from her pod a little older than most of the orcas in captivity. She knows how to hunt, how to communicate. The problem with releasing the orcas in captivity based on 3 things which are 1)the pod's location 2)culture barrier 3)hunting. They know the location of her pod. She knows the culture of her pod, language. And she knows hunting. It can be happen if the cruel madman who prisons her decides to release her finally or (I hope very very soon) when he dies.

@@tessdurberville711 First, my main language is not English so sometimes I tend to forget little differences between similar words and that effects my usage of words. And second of all yes that man is insane. They offered him lots lots of money to free Lolita and he refused all of them saying he "loves" her so much and continues to keep her in a small tank. If this isn't madness then I don't know what this is.

We once had human zoos, for the very same reasons. I recently learned we still do. Take the Jarawas, from the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean, one of the last surviving indigenous people on Earth. They number about 400 people. They are used as a tourist attraction for human safaris. Recurrently, tourists throw bananas or sweets at them from their vehicles and order them to dance. Believe it or not, there are more examples like this one. In China, there is a theme park populated with midgets, forced to live on the premises. Etc ...
