Raghu Raman asks you: "Have you been personally affected by terrorism?" No matter where you live, he argues, your answer should be yes. In this talk, he looks into the changes that even small acts of terror force into into our lives.
Raman has a unique blend of career experiences combining a decade plus of serving in the Armed Forces as a combat soldier, another decade plus heading three companies and then working for the government for the past four years in the Ministry of Home as the CEO of the National Intelligence Grid. He is considered to be an authority on defence and security related matters and in addition to being a visiting faculty in management and business institutions, is a columnist for a business paper. In his talk, Raman will talk on "Three Myths of Terrorism" and show how each one of us is paying a price for terrorism on a daily basis. More startlingly how many of us are also abetting it inadvertently.

I think he is just trying to point out in what ways terrorism affects us. From what I understand he is not undermining the pain/suffering which the relatives and friends go through if their loved ones are killed/injured, he is just trying to make us aware of how is everyone more or less affected by terrorism unknowingly. I never thought it this way. I must say that this was new learning for me.

Love this talk! Yes, we cannot solve any problem without even trying to address the root causes. Same for terrorism. If hindutva is the result of the exploitation of the public fear of Islamic radicalisation, then there is obviously a reason for Islamic radicalisation too. It is so important to understand and resolve the root cause for it to resolve terrorism.

these are effect of terrorism...when social evils are there in the existence...we can not afford to be lax in terms of security ... so until and unless everyone preach peach in society,we cannot take expenditure on security to developmental issues...this situation is too utopian to exist...still he has valid points...

Could'nt agree more, well put up speech, however i doupt most of the people get the idea he was talking about, so let me put try to put a light on some of the point he made: first when he said terrorism is disease which can be cured by physiotherapist not by a surgeon he meant that a person become rebel when he is treated poorly, constantly been reminded by masses he is inferior from them, and something really wrong done to his family by the majority, in return he become angry, and this anger esclated to the point where he want to take ravange, his this condition is being exploited by the opponent groups, at the end we get a terrorist. Second whe he said that many nationalist leaders give macho statement that they will be intolerant toward terroism, they would be tough on them, what they actualy saying that they will act like surgeon instead of physiotherapist.

I could not agree with you more. In my opinion there are three fundamental issues. Drugs, Arms and Oil and in that order. All terrorism is a fall out of these and primary in nature. Leave this aside, while I propagate similar views in several forums I find that Indians; general awareness is so poor. We really have a very long way to go for our society to understand your conversation. Nevertheless it is good beginning. I m sure when I share on facebook NO ONE is going to view this. Good luck.

By comparing terrorism casualties to road deaths, he is downplaying the significance of terrorism. This guy is a Lefty. The fact is that these casualties are all additive and cumulative. If more people die from road accidents, then does it make someone immoral for campaigning against breast cancer, or campaigning against terrorism? The way to defeat terrorism is to take the fight to the terrorists - including to their havens. Obviously you can't defeat terrorism by staying on the defensive. That's why the best defense is a good offense. India is failing against terrorism because it has stupidly allowed Pakistan to acquire a nuclear shield to protect itself while becoming a base of operations for terrorism against India. This is why intelligent countries like Israel and the USA are rightfully concerned about preventing certain rogue states which use terrorism as a prime tool of foreign policy from acquiring nuclear weapons. We Indians may like to take pride in ourselves, but our record in fighting terrorism is very poor. Other countries around the world don't look to us a role model in fighting terrorism. As far as this fellow's "physiotherapy" prattle is concerned - there is no way solve every social problem. Terrorism is intended as an orchestrated attack on a country's freedoms, whereas crime is only interested in petty profit rather than an explicit attack on freedom. Certainly there is a moral stance that public and civic leaders should take in marshalling society against those who are engaging in orchestrated warfare against society by covert means, which is what terrorism is.

Very vague, almost philosophical kind of a speech. I don't think it solves any of our problems. Who is/will do the running for Ajmal Kasab? I just couldn't get what is the end point of what he was saying. Should we remove our security measures so that the same young men and women can be "economically productive"? By trying to cure the disease, should we go and attack Muridke and Bhawalpur? What is he trying to say? I would be really happy if someone can explain this to a ignorant like me.

@somitirth It is philosophcal but true. This is a long speech hitting various points on various situatios and all the situations are inter-dependent. So what I can try is simplifying it for you by answering your questions. 1. It is a domino effect, we can't undo 26/11, however we can stop these AKs from infiltrating(or getting made) by hitting hteir economy,primarily by stop using black market goods(we never know who is earning money with it). 2. He is talking about 'balance' in the ratio of deploying armed personnel. People demand that there should be more and more and more security everywhere, after every incident. Now if govt will do this, then the eco:security ratio will get skewed and will affect the country economically,AGAIN, affecting the country. This is way too broad to explain in detail, I hope I was able to explain at least a bit, if not much.
@schaudhurikol
@schaudhurikol 7 жыл бұрын
***** Jahangeer Asif Thank you for your kind explanations. I agree with most of your arguments. One thing that I think would be a prudent thing to do, would be to device unambiguous short, medium and long term strategies. Almost all countries around the world are tackling the menace of terrorism tactically and not strategically. A sound strategy needs to be put in place. However, to achieve any sort of strategic victory, short term tactical measures like increased security, intelligence and surveillance are also a must.

Illogical talk. The worst Ted talk ever I have seen. He was so confused in his points. Everyone is affected by terrorism but not in the form of budgetary money spend on health or education or security but the are affected because of the terror that an attack leave behind. We can't compare the death due to a road accident with the death due to terrorism. A road accident in Mumbai don't produce as much terror in the heart of whole world as a bomb blast produces. Similarly we can't compare piracy and terrorism as same crime. Import of pirated dvd is not taking someone's life or it's not spreading any terror in the country. He talk about the money spend on security should go on education and health? Education, health and everything else will be beneficial only if the country will remain free and safe. Earning of a country depends on businesses and that require safe environment.
