I was recently 3 months without a phone and laptop. Went walking in the countryside. Listened to old vinyls on a record player. Read books. Magazines. Watched movies. Played guitar. All the stress in my shoulders and lower back disappeared. Amazing experience.

william beck Well yeah it's a hundred times better seeing a person then looking at pics and reading there posts . There isn't emotion on social media . My favorite excuse about using facebook is " I use it to keep in contact with my family " um how long has people been contacting their family before face book ? How did they do it before computers ?
@williambeck6575

william beck The personal interactions are now gone and people are OK with it . Or when they post pictures of themselves at like a party to the same people they are at the party with . Or do the girls need so much attention that they have to ask for comments on every picture they post ? Does it give them more self worth ?

@moozycla6
@moozycla6 8 жыл бұрын
Elisa van den Berg You can't make friends if you're sitting on your chair 24/24. You've to go out, look in the places that you love, hangout and communicate in a healthy way. That's how you be able to meet your new friends.
@NegativeNeutral
@NegativeNeutral 8 жыл бұрын
+Moozy Mathers Ive met multiple friends from the internet. And not 'internet' friends which you won't consider real friends. People that I plan to meet up with one day. People that I actively talk to via Skype. Hell, a friend that I know prevented another friend's suicide just by skyping with him every other day (he had depression which was diagnosed by a licensed physiatrist). I can confidently say that they know more about me then my own mother and father. And if your going to try to make the point that I have no idea if they are who they say they are, don't try. We Skype each other with our cameras on, know each others face books, twitter and instagram. While I respect your opinion, my personal experience has given me enough knowledge to deduce that in fact, you can make friends when your sitting in a chair.
@NegativeNeutral
@NegativeNeutral 8 жыл бұрын
+Moozy Mathers Also, many people are naturally more open to others they meet online because they may feel timid in face to face conversations. This opens up even more possibilities for a close relationship to develop. That said, sitting on your ass 24/7 will absolutely destroy your physical health. Sooooo... Yeah I cannot recommend it to that degree.
@FredderickAnselmo
@FredderickAnselmo 8 жыл бұрын
+TheTopHatManiac to be honest finding a friends in Internet is easy, now finding a personal friends is a very very different thing. you know a bonds that you can remember without a help of Internet social media pictures...just a raw natural experience.. now for a depression topic is different. But I assured you Internet alone can't sovle depression.

one of my best friends randomly quit social media when we were in 11th grade (2 years ago). He was a fantastic photographer so his Instagram was beautiful, he was extremely funny so his Twitter feed was hilarious; but one day he just quit. At the time I was so confused. "how could someone just quit social media" I asked myself, as if us as humans were obligated to use it. 2 years later im now realizing why he did it, and now I plan to do it.

You do not get Internet on your phone. I have 10 Mbps at home included to rent, so I pay non extra. That's enough. I watch movies, do banking, KZfaq always home. On my phone, it is a smartphone I do not have most apps. I delete or disable what I can just to leave basics. My internet plan is always the cheapest with lowest speed (as we have no data packages in Finland). Everything is unlimited based on your speed preference. On my phone I have most of the time 1 Mbps connection to save money and internet usage. It works fine.

Its like a way of sugar coating your happiness when you should use that time to be happy rather showing it to all your followers you have on instagram. At the end of the day your true loved ones are with you now and your instagram follwers are not benefting you in anyway .

Kyla doesn't have to be "all or nothing, " though...I'm sure it's hard to be a teenager in this society. I decided to limit my Facebook "check ins" in 2017, and other than a few thoughts about posting, I really don't miss it. It's a platform to market products..the "friends" thing is not for connecting with others, it's "your might buy this because so and so did." I may eventually delete my account, but I'm waiting to see how much I want it in my life. I've found that friends of mine are only asking me to remain there to look at pictures of their kids. If they need my validation for their lives, they need to validate themselves.

A great tip to any of you reading this: Whenever you want to really do something with 100% of your attention and focus just turn off your internet and phone. I usually plan my days in the evenings. Before going to bed I sit down and think what are the most important things I should do tomorrow. And during the time I do them I just go offline. It helps a lot! great message :-) I agree with Paul's thesis: being 100% online isn't the answer, and being 100% offline isn't either. It's finding the balance. The internet is an amazing resource and it's not the internet that determines our productivity. It's just the scapegoat that some people use to avoid personal accountability for the actions we choose and don't choose to do. :-)

I’ve also realized that when you meet people in person for the first time you have a deeper connection than if you were to meet them online. You tend to hang out with them more in person as well. I’ve met ppl online who I’ve never seen in person lose contact and eventually never speak to them again. I’ve met ppl in person talk every now and then but the connection is still there without social media being the middle man. That’s what social media really is the middle man between the real world and the virtual world.

Gibireido Vlog Say that to people who make a living competing through video games, it's nothing different than sports, people want to get good at football, people want to get good at league of legends, so they spend hours practicing and working on their mental state for competition. I do agree though that pointlessly playing video games with no purpose is a waste of time. Like sitting around for 5 hours with chips and shooting people. I may be a bit biased since I do compete at tournaments for video games, and it's provided signifignt satisfaction and life lessons.

This was very refreshing....loved the honesty. Something I'd been wondering about for awhile...should I go offline. The internet is a master at distraction, but I like the realization he had that we are the ones who need to get better at being present in our life because there is always another distraction, whether it be tv, video games, a dvd collection, magazine subscriptions, gossip, or our own thoughts that can twirl and repeat and get lost in. Here's my plan: I need to set goals and boundaries...especially if I have a big slot of free time...so I don't squander it in "free information" indulgence. I literally have to set the timer on my phone for 20 minutes or whatever before checking my email, to remind myself to get back on track and pull back my attention from the internet. Otherwise, 2 hours flies by in a blink. Thank you!

Well that's easy to say when you haven't experienced something you aren't hooked. Try to disconnect yourself from the internet now after having many connections, fast, easy communication for one year. It's not impossible but it's more about not being distracted by the bombardment of content entirely geared towards your likes that have been calculated by computers ever since your first google search.

Playing video games as a substitute kind of ruined it for me. It was replacing one addiction for another. It was a good presentation though, regardless. I can admit, I'm addicted to the Internet, who wouldn't like the Internet? It's awesome! haha. Here's the cycle: If I got rid of my desktop computer, what would I do? I'd research and play on my laptop. If I got rid of my laptop, what would I do? I'd watch more TV. If I got rid of my TV, what would I do? I'd play and research on my phone. What if I got rid of my phone? I'd read more books. What if I got rid of all my books and never went to another book store or library? I'd probably start working out. I'd probably build up to working out 6 days a week for two hours each day. I'd probably get into CrossFit then into triathlons and marathons and hiking and rock climbing and so on. It seems no matter what many of us do in our day to day lives, we become addicted to it. Be it drugs, alcohol, the Internet, poker, or even working out. Everything comes back to balance. Paul's Orthodox Jewish friend said it well, he experienced off line so he can share his experience online. That's it, I'm out, I'm unplugging! Oh look...a TED video about why we ask questions, that will be my last one. Promise.

Jason Ray yeah I was quite disappointed in him for that. I stopped using Facbeook recently, because I missed how productive I was as a teenager when I had technology, but not regular cheap internet access. I used to do a lot of programming in my free time back then (now I get paid for working with computers so I usually want to be doing something else when I get home). Anyway, I find my time is best spent in a split of all that stuff you mention. Working out an hour or two a few times a week is pretty easy and makes you feel good, and then working out your brain with books and educational videos is also good. The rest of the time it's fine to relax with video games or movies, but you'll feel much more worthwhile if you actually invest some time in your health and skillset.

Slaves? Slaves is not the right word... If we were slaves then we would have to do internet's bidding, we don't do that though, right? This is like saying to a guy who is calling someone on their phone ,,You are a slave to your phone.''. ''And when we're bored we just grab our phones and start traveling from app to an app just to waist the time'' that is the same as saying that when someone picks up a magazine and starts reading it just to waste time. How is that bad, in any way? You are gathering information either way, so why is internet getting way more hate than anything else? (When it comes to entertainment.)

This is the correct answer, balance. I spend a lot of time online, but I also go outside, go to an event every now and again, and talk to my family and friends face to face. I've been using the 'net since 2000 so I've managed to figure out how to use it without it being who I am. It's my main source of entertainment and information seeking but it doesn't dictate my life. If I get internet fatigue I simply walk away and recharge. That's the key to using the internet and life, listen to what your body and mind are telling you.
@AlishiaSala

unlike other experimentalists turned experts in happiness i kinda found this guys talk refreshing. i loved that the over-arching thought was (to paraphrase) "i don't know. It didn't change me as i thought it would. I still haven't figured it out. I only learned that the internet isn't my problem. the problem goes much deeper than that." I think its pretty brave to do an experiment like this, not get the results you had hoped for and still tell your story. Very few seekers will ever share some portion of their path until they felt they had already truly arrived. I love that this talk leaves you to discover your own answers. It leaves you with questions and something to think about rather than a monotonous 5 step prescription for happiness. I wish he had done an experiment in going 100% screen free and rather than sitting in his apartment had planned a full year away in communities that don't have the internet. I think he may have gained greater insight in that kind of environment. sounds like he didn't have an opportunity to "cleanse" fully from screen distractions + there wasn't enough there to fill in the void and support him in making new life discoveries. One thing I don't feel he gives himself enough credit for is "trying". At least he tried it, sat still and withered away. I have a feeling the insights he gained from this year will one day come to fruition and serve him greatly as he discovers more of who he is in the future. Seems like a decent guy. Hope he discovers more of what he was looking for down the road.

I guess it’s changed everyone’s life but the amount of music, films, books, art, photography, knowledge and information I’ve gained from it can’t be denied. Facebook and Instagram has put me back in touch with old school friends and family members who I now see and hang with in person. I like staying connected and keeping up with the news and the world. Internet addiction is a real thing. Excessive computer/phone use causes depression and stupidity(I'm not kidding). It's too easy to receive gratifying snidbits of information and validation for little work. If you're really trying to disconnect you have to do it in a controlled way. Limit use of computers and cell phones to a particular room or place and limit the amount of time. If you find yourself breaking your own rules do something physical like going for a walk or push-ups as a form of punishment. Breaking rules is not failure. Lastly whatever ever your doing don't do it with "distractions," ie don't watch youtube videos while doing dishes. Commit wholly to what you are doing...if you are eating, eat and enjoy, if you are at a friends leave your phone in your car, etc etc. If you find yourself making plans to hang out with friends but when the time comes finding it a chore to hang out only to watch TV, surf the web, or play games only you might have a problem, not that there is anything wrong with alone time. Also consider how often you use pornography or justifying the use of using the internet to yourself(ie i was doing research on what I was going to by on Amazon). This is called backwards rationalization and is a huge source of stress. Lastly turn, write down how you want to change and list steps towards doing it. Writing down your game plan helps you get closer to completing your goal. Good luck dude!

richard splichal Great tips in there! I usually dont read walls of text but this one is good! Thanks! Im not surprised that over use of electronics makes us more stupid or even lazy! haha you describe what i feel most of the time when friends want to hang out. It does feel like a chore. Hell sometimes everything feels like a chore. But the other day, i did something I dont usually do. I was having anxiety while on my computer. About life, and tasks that i currently had, whilst playing games. I thought eff this, so i just left my comp and sat down in a quiet room alone with my thoughts. It was only 10 minutes or so but after relaxing with nothing to distract me, I felt a clear head. I can only imagine what it feels like to be away from a computer for much much longer. Thanks again for the insightful post.

The internet is a honey trap for confirmation bias. Reading academic texts, a variety of them, with discipline is the only principled way of gaining an understand on a subject. I would not humor someone who read a wikipedia article from beginning to end to give me a scholarly interpretation on an academic subject.

I did say "only principled way," didn't I? You can do a cursory online search and get a general understanding on a subject, but I'll be damned if you tell me that's comparable or even on the same order of understanding gained through academic text.

boredom is a sense of needing to be distracted from yourself because you have grown accustomed to being distracted. in these moments when boredom arises you need to use a technique to bring your concentration/awareness back to yourself and hold it there for a time. repeating this process surely will slowly rewrite your concentration and awareness patterns to be directed towards yourself and away from distraction.

I need to to get off the internet too. I mean I find a lot of good educational content but its mostly a distraction and takes up too much of my time. I think a better idea than just quitting the internet is to only use it on certain days or at a certain time each day. or maybe limit it to an hour a day. Infact starting today I'm going to limit myself to one hour per day and I'll let you know how it goes as an experiment. I know I've needed to do this for a long time and this guy has inspired me to act now. Soo..peace!

Well I kind of fell off the wagon if you will but I have been forcing myself to just put the computer away more often. I think maybe I'll let myself have 1 or 2 days a week that are exceptions but any other day 1 hour is the limit. I have to a list of things to do that I've been putting off... Also I find that when I put the computer away I'm more tempted to watch tv which I don't normally do or play video games. I'm the worst procrastinator ever...its horrible but they say awareness is the first step. Anyway thanks for asking I'll try to update how it goes and maybe even help other chronic procrastinators along the way.

Its the time spent in front of the screen that is the same,of course I know he played offline. He still spent his spare time and the time he was working thinking about playing,time he could have spent doing the things he talked about before he said this. Ive played games since 1978 and,I wont say waisted but very nearly,have spent 1000's and 1000's of hrs on them and I just know I must have missed out on a lot more enriching expierences for doing so. Even now I am upstairs typing this instead of being downstairs with my amazing gf and her baby,but fuck it just a quick round of BF4

Actually, hell yeah you guys are right. I guess I viewed it differently at that moment but now that I think about it, he still wasted the 'freedom' he had. However, that wasn't my point. He is SO RIGHT! You don't just delete all your social medias, close the laptop and voila! you're the most productive person ever, which is what I thought he was gonna say when I clicked on this, thinking "what am I doing wrong?" I was SO bored and even more unproductive! Balance is key! If you don't want to do something you will find any excuse not to do it, the internet is just one of them. I'm glad he clarified that the internet isn't bad, we just need to learn when to use it.

It' all about balance. People (even me) who aren't balanced in something (like internet) end up thinking that "modern society" is trying to limit our power and making us addicted to things that make us loose time and freedom (maybe they're right). The reality is that our society gives us many tools (like internet) to make our life easier and even better in some ways, but many people can't use these tools in a productive way and end up getting addicted to them. Internet is not the problem obviously, but it becomes a problem for those who can't use it in a balanced way. (sorry for my english I'm an italian 18yo student)

I never had the internet until I was 15 (I guess my parents were super-old fashioned considering I'm a millennial) and I don't think there's anything wrong personally. But a lot of people these days become over involved with social media like crazy. Then there's pornography and using Google as a substitute for using your brain (ie not working out a quick math problem but typing it in your iPhone), and the issue of becoming self-centered. But there's a lot of good out there, It's all about leveraging the internet and avoiding the evils. And hopefully one day the internet will be a safer place for everyone (especially for younger people), but it's really just about self-control.

Part of the issue is that the newer generations don't have a basis of comparison when it comes to living with or without the internet. I was lucky enough to have grown up without the internet. We weren't board. We were highly creative and made up our own games and projects. I now attempt to hire young people to come and work on my farm. I'm sorry, but the majority of these young people are slow, lazy, and have no work ethic. It's a sad thing to watch. Few, if any, of them have mechanical skills to fix fence, drive a tractor, or care for animals. They aren't tough. Most of them are wimpy, inappropriately dependent on family, and are not realistic about the world around them. The internet has its benefits, however, it hasn't improved humanity, it has digressed it.

Not really. Hate will always be a part of society. Cavemen hated each other too. This whole notion that we have more hate than ever is wrong, we just see it more because we have a form of instant communication. It's nothing new or unique, it's just part of the human experience.

I agree with what Paul Miller said. I’m also very involved in social media and I cannot imagine going through a day without it. After hearing from his experience, I learned that we should be in control of our lives and not let the internet dictate us. However, going totally offline from the internet may not be a wise choice. One thing I admire and ought to learn from him was his determination to have control over his life. After going offline for a year, he was able to interact with people in a more intense and personal way because he doesn’t have a distraction that will interfere his conversations with others. I applaud his perseverance because I know it is really hard to get off the internet when we are already so used to it. Another takeaway from his experience was to strike a good balance between coping with ourselves online and offline. It is not good to be a 100 per cent online or offline because we are definitely going to miss out on one aspect if we were to do that. The most important thing is to know what our priorities are and to set it right. (200 words, Jolanda Goh, CMM/TB02)
