NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk to diagnose yourself or others. This talk reflects the speaker's interpretation of Machiavellianism and interpersonal relationships, which remains a part of ongoing debate among social scientists. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
More context can be found below:
Some researchers have found Machiavellian personality traits are not fixed across lifespan and may decrease over time. For more information see here: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32145...
Critiques around Machiavellianism and dark triad personality traits in business settings can be found here: www.science.org/content/artic...
Have you ever been the victim of manipulation? Do you need to know how to deal with toxic people? This talk explains dark triad traits, helps you recognize different types of manipulative people, and provides a way of dealing with manipulators by using their strategic thinking against them.
Daniel N. Jones, an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada Reno, is renowned for his research on dark personalities, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He's received accolades like the Early Career Award from the Western Psychological Association and grants from entities like the National Science Foundation. Jones delves into the Dark Triad and Tetrad, exploring traits like Machiavellianism and sadism, with a focus on their implications in areas like cyber-security. He's also authored a forthcoming book on "Emophilia: The Science of Serial Romance." Passionate about interdisciplinary solutions, he aims to establish consulting services to implement his evidence-based interventions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Great to meet with you at TEDx and so glad I got to see this talk in person. Many people feel like it’s their fault when they engage with a manipulator and begin to question their own self-worth. These tips help to put them back on the track to empowerment and trusting themselves again. What a unique way to take back control especially in situations when you can’t immediately get out of interacting with them (like if they’re a co-worker). Thanks so much Dr. Jones for your unique perspective!

Okay... So I agree 99%. I have actually done a lot of this with my ex who I question if he was a sociopath. I'm extremely empathetic but also very rational. The one thing I don't agree on is: there's no place for it in a healthy relationship. If you do it right, I disagree. But, I was also still very honest and addressed emotional things as well (rationally) and didn't sweep that under the rug. And I know I made my ex think and won many battles this way that I'm sure planted lil seeds in his mind opening him up to change, as niave as it may sound to some. One tiny example... He'd get verbally abusive sometimes, so I'd always address the behavior itself rather than reacting too much to the things he would say about me. I'd turn it back around on him to make him reflect. He'd get very frustrated that his insults didn't effect me much. He even complained about it once saying something like "except you don't even care [what I say about you]!" Me: "well... Why would I want to let those things bother me?" *Him being confused and stopping to think*: "well... Why do I care them? [The things I say about him] me: "idk! Why do you???" So if you do it with emotional intelligence, I think you can also help someone else to learn emotional intelligence. But it can't be in a patronizing way, it has to be so rational and lead them to make the realizations on their own. The hardest part was not getting caught up in my own emotions and being reactive rather than responsive like he says... This took time. But the more I saw through him and understood him, the easier it became. I got pretty good at getting through to him at times, and I know I'll be in his head for a long time to come.. even if I did eventually have to just walk away, as I felt like it was time. My intuition told me I did enough and the best I could do for him now was push him out of the nest.. because after a certain point, it can be enabling to be there for someone endlessly without making them to the work themselves after you know they know better. Time to fly on your own lil birdie.

In summary: A person who finds themselves in a trap sometimes learns behaviors which in any other context could then be called macheveillianism. Like for example pretending to be asleep or dying first when they are not in hopes of later after their captors are asleep then getting away. People with the personality trait called Macheveillianism in contrast behave in patterns that are predictable in any context once one or more people have their number.

I read Macchiavelli's book The Prince some years ago. Meant to be a guide for those aspiring to a political career. Very interesting & accessible! But my interpretation was not that he was ADVOCATING it, but merely DESCRIBING. He at one point sadly asserted that leaders who operate in an honorable way are all too vulnerable, the bad guys win.

I hope you all do realize, despite no doubt on how convincing and probably unquestionably correct his words and studies are, that his words are also impregnated with something I feel as hate-ish towards these kinds of personalities and do not express or promote one very important thing: compassion for these people. So here's the truth and it's here besides you being so toxicly hateful towards these people (and you no doubt have good reasons to be, I'm not saying you don't or shouldn't): they were the abused and controlled ones in the first place, and if their only chance of survival was to develop that kind of a personality, if you are not one of them, well then you surely get the point I'm doing about compassion. He could have just limited himself to saying "hey look, you're in this situation? Well here's what you should do to feel better yourself the fastest way possible" instead of engaging in this hate war spreading hate all around. To me it seems that if his intentions to help were truly sincere he wouldn't have needed the mocking part (which is 90% of the talk btw), instead his speech feels like it is hiding resentment over his past experiences on this topic underneath, and he actually literally tells it at the very start of the talk if you notice. I am no one to say this but, honestly, he feels manipulative himself with how he decided to give the speech. I hope it was just to keep the attention high (not justifying it), after all the goal is always views on these platforms

You just need to be really willing to change and seek help from a therapist if you can't deal with it yourself (which is the case for 99% of people so don't even feel a bit ashamed). And btw, don't know if you red my comment up there but do not feel too bad for the words he uses in the speech, they are kinda hateful.. and also mind that everyone has work to do on the self and therapy is generally a good way

Maybe they should create "nice weekend syndrome" The nice man syndrome is on point, Its about men who are not honest about their feelings or actions. but "nice weeked syndrome" can be actually about being honest to yourself and to feelings to others. Make idea once a week going to a nature, camping or hiking with a family, play silly games, with some ball, or do tenis, husband will bond more with wife, wife will bond more with husband, thanks to innocent silly games. I mean games like "who will" make the tent first etc or who will prepare food, or something little just for fun, bringing some mushroom, in such innocent moment wife and husband enjoy the moments of silence, and gentle loving touch, holding hands while walking in nature, or he helps making a camp fire, she will hand him the stuff from bag, without any silly analytical "thoughts" in head looking into each others eyes, without words, Actions speak louder than constantly anlyzing, In silence they actually create "bonding loving" atmposphere in their marriage. People dont practice this silent approach, just sitting looking in camp fire and enjoy family time, or riding a horse together, walking a dog silently, and enjoying the other person´s presence, they are taught by media, to just talk all the time, so they dont have time to fall in love over and over again. But usually you fall in love especially when your mouth are shut, when your mind isnt too rational in prefrontal cortex, and eyes open, not in times of constant analyzis. so ypou let your heart speak sometimes too. Its called brain heart coherence, in state of alpha, theta. Laughter is healling and laughter makes people bond together. Children may learn new hobbies. It is better than being constantly attacked by news and silly topics on social media, or being brainwashed to eat some pills to feel happier. Hobbies and laughter is good stimulation for brain, also it increases immunity of the body, so people feel healthier, happier.
