As a career advisor and former admissions counselor for a large university, Chapreese Pennington-Willis has helped coach students through any number of barriers: “I don’t have enough time; It’s too expensive; I have other commitments.” But when one future student named “shame” as his roadblock, Chapreese’s world changed. That one phone call brought to light her own dirty little secret - one she kept hidden for over 20 years - and became the catalyst to reach a goal she didn’t think was possible.

Thank you, Chapreese. I really related to you and your story. When I graduated from high school, I went into automotive tech and I failed at it because I did not try, I just "winged it" and I let that number and that unwillingness to try hold me back for a while, that with getting fired from 3 jobs as a mechanic in the same year, it brought great shame to me and made me feel worthless for the few years afterwards. Now I'm working full time at a company I enjoy and just started classes today for a bachelors in accounting, and I felt afraid to sign up for it and still have that little voice telling me to take the easy route and quit, but hearing this and the stories of others it is good to know I am not alone
