The Internet I helped launch in 1969 behaved well for 25 years. Then, in 1994, the first broad-based spam message thrust it into the commercial world which recognized that our magnificent research network could be used as a powerful shopping machine, a gossip chamber, an entertainment channel, and a social club. The dark side has emerged and we now face the complex challenge to be met by all the stakeholders to work jointly to right this ship and hopefully redirect it back to some semblance of the Internet I knew. Dr. Leonard Kleinrock pioneered the mathematical theory of packet networks, the technology underpinning the Internet. For his enormous contribution to understanding the power of packet networks he was honored with the Charles Stark Draper Award as one of the fathers of the Internet, along with Vinton Cerf, Robert Kahn, and Larry Roberts. He is a developer of ARPANET, the seedling that grew into today’s global Internet, and his laboratory’s UCLA Host computer became the first ARPANET node in September 1969. A month later, he directed the first transmission to pass over the blossoming network.
Dr. Kleinrock received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1963. He currently serves as a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at UCLA. He has published over 250 papers and authored six books on a wide array of subjects including packet switching networks, packet radio networks, local area networks, broadband networks, nomadic computing, peer-to-peer networks, and intelligent software agents.
Dr. Kleinrock is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an IEEE fellow, an ACM fellow, an INFORMS Fellow, and an IEC fellow. Among his many honors, he is the recipient of the Ericsson Prize, the NAE Draper Prize, the Marconi Prize, the Okawa Prize, and was further recognized when he received the 2007 National Medal of Science, the highest honor for achievement in science bestowed by the President of the United States. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

An amazing talk! I wonder why the views are not much. I hope the KZfaq recommendation algo should do a better job, rather than showing irrelevant videos in my feed :P

Very interesting historical information put in simple terms for us who are not computer nerds, but are curious just the same. Thanks Mr Kleinrock for being a part of the beginnings and giving your ideas away for free so the rest of the world can be so entertained and connected if we so wish.

Kleinrock is a legend. As for what happened... well, they were working and developing the internet prior to this thing called the Reagan Revolution. In the 1980s the idea that government investment could drive great innovation was lumped in with welfare queens and tax-and-spend big government, etc. For the last 40 years, we expect all great things to come from hungry investors rather than actual innovators.
