Teen Athlete Struggles to Breathe During Exercise, Learns Issue Isn’t Asthma

A breathing condition called exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction, or EILO, was robbing Maya of her love for playing basketball. The condition is often misdiagnosed as exercise-induced asthma. Maya’s doctor, Cleveland Clinic voice and upper airway specialist, Claudio Milstein, Ph.D., says in individuals with EILO, the vocal cords tend to close when they should actually open, obstructing the airway and causing shortness of breath. The condition prevents a person from taking in enough breath to handle the exertion. After therapy and hard work, Maya is back on the court. She’s recognized as our 2023 Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine Courage Award winner for the 23rd Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.

i might have this as a 30 yr old who does HIIT training. I struggle to also jog. I cough out really loudly just so I could take in air. Idk i might go see a doctor

i face shortnes of breahe daily after a small run and in gym i cant even do one set of squats. i have done my all tests like blod sugar, lipid profile,cbc,electrolytes ecg, echo, ecg threadmill are normal. i am so much depressed no one even diagnose what happened to me. i only face passiing out like air hunger and black vision with weird sensation in my eyes when my heart rate goes on 150 and plus. i face no chest tightness ANYONE PLEASE HELP.
