As the first Turtles game for NES, released in June 1989, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sold copies mostly because it was based on a popular television show. TMNT has gained a reputation for being a brutally difficult game due to the hordes of enemies you fight, and the fact you never gain life after beating a stage. Raph isn't useless. He oneshots all flying enemies. Particularly useful in the technodrome. You just have to use him situationaly.

Go back in time to 1989 and basically everyone loved this game. The next generation of kids all decided it was terrible. Personally I think it's fun as hell with awesome music, but the enemy and level design are super half-assed by Konami 1989 standards.

i just subscribed to this channel several days ago watching speed runs of castlevania SOTN....let me tell you guys something...you guys are awesome and its all for a good cause...keep it up.....S/O to feasel...i dont know you but this game ABSOLUTELY PISSED ME OFF AS A KID (especially the underwater swimming parts and not knowing where to go.....havent touched the game since, but after watching this...i might get some payback from being frustrated as a kid......

oh man, this takes me back...although i couldn't beat this game in under 30 min. i usually toss my controller and said fukit after that damn dam stage. i did learn the pizza's respawn after you leave the screen (wish i would have known that 25 years ago)......one of my favorite games, good work man!!

A friend of mine in Alaska back then got me interested in playing this game, brings back memories both good and bad. Hang in there feasel, everyones got a bad run once in a while, but I hope you'll find the technodrome more easier next time. :)

About Splinter becoming human at the end, it actually makes sense. This Shredder fight is based on episode 5 of the cartoon where Shredder had that retro-mutagen-gun which could have changed back Splinter, but then got destroyed by him to save his Turtles from becoming changed back to normal turtles again. For some reason, Shredder and Krang (unlike in the later games) never rebuild this OHKO-weapon. So, after Shredder is beaten here the Turtles get the gun (which he actually uses in the battle, I think, if anybody lets him attack properly at all) and therefore can turn Splinter back to human.

I remember having this and at the time I was 5 years old, I never got through the underwater part trying to deactivate all the bombs because I either got sucked into the coral reefs or the plants that shocked you.

The thing about this game that drove me NUTS was: * You do the whole laborious underwater sequence, never come up for air, get messed up by seaweed, keep swimming, disarm explosives... ok, ok... fine, whatever * Later, you take one jump too early and FALL INTO WATER = instant death THAT IS WHERE I DRAW THE LINE, lol!

+Novastar (SaberCombat) Doesn't the water just take you outside without doing damage? In the sewers, I mean. Easier to use it than try to fight back outside if you want to farm weapons etc.

5:59 You can in fact bypass that entire room and jump on that last ledge from the beginning. I have done it as a kid in the early 90's and can still do it to this day. It is by far one of the most difficult frame jumps, but it's doable.

It was good but the sewer was brutal...fell in 4 times, tried to get a pizza he didnt need everytime and wanted to spawn the birds instead of the balloons which are much easier to avoid. Still...he's way better than we are at the game. Cheers!

TMNT nes game is one the hardest games I ever beat back in the day when I was kid things were getting hard the swimming part and the turle says OK flexes muscles luv that part too! then meca turtle then the Mouser and underground caverns then those damn purple flying ray gun laser guys To me shredder was breeze.

I remember being, like 9, and finishing the dam underwater level. This game is pretty hard, but I feel like it got a bad rap because of the AVGN review. I'd say James, personally, doesn't hate it that much.

Inside the Technodrome was as far as I ever got. After I got a gameover there I was like fuck this. I really gave it all I had. Maybe I should try it again... such a hard game, for me.

Gosh, going back and watching these older GDQ events is refreshingly different. There's still good stuff to see in the new ones, but a lot more nonsense, and the culture is just totally different. These old ones feel less like attention seekers and more like people who just love playing games.

I only ever beat this game one time. The first time I got to Shredder, he killed me in one hit almost immediately, and I was like "screw this game". A few months later, I went back and tried again, and succeeded. I don't think I ever played it again after that. I sold a bunch of my NES games, including this, Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, Clash at Demonhead and several others, to help buy an SNES. Even though I loved the SNES, I always regretted selling those games.
