I may be wrong, but i think it's a Pipistrelle bat. One of the smallest species in Europe. They have a light brown fluffy coat and get quite plump (still small) when they grow up. They like small cracks in brickwork or attics/lofts to nest in. They are completely harmless, but a few bats could have rabies (being a mammal), so you should avoid touching them. These bats and many others are protected in a lot of countries (especially here in UK), so disturbing their nest could get you in trouble. If you want to see one, wait until dusk (the sun is about to go down or just gone down), when it's warm (preferably summer), look at open areas with some bushy low trees... and you will hear and see them feeding on airborne insects at the tree level, they are very quick and will do a few loops🙂

It's absolutely wonderful he saved Barnaby the bat. He also did the right thing by contacting professional rehabbers. Because you really don't see bats on the ground unless they're sick. Luckily in this case it was heatstroke & they were able to help him. But you never want to just pick one up because some carry rabies. Instead use something to carefully transfer them to a box or leave them where found & contact local bat rescuers. They're generally vaccinated against rabies so can more safely handle them. But they're absolutely wonderful animals that deserve to be rescued.

In my twenties I worked as a janitor and two baby bats like this, I found on the ground, they had fallen nearly 8 stories from the top of the apartments. I took them into my apartment there, called a bat specialist, I wanted to save those babies so bad, she told me there was nothing I could do😢 and she told me to put them next to each other and place them in the freezer and let them pass away in their sleep. She said they could not be helped because of probable internal injuries. It absolutely killed me... I didn't want to, there was no where to take them... I did as she asked, left my apartment came back, they had passed away... 😢 My heart broke into thousands of pieces that day, I was depressed and couldn't eat for a while. There were many bats nesting on the roof of the building.. to this day, 30 something years later.. it hurts so bad..... Seeing this post brought it back... I loved those babies. Forgive me little ones😢 I've been trying to rescue animals, and those in need my whole life.

when i was four i found two pink baby bats on the ground, my mom then found the injured mother, i still remember holding them in my mitten while we drove to a vet

I was so privileged to have world renowned bat expert, Dr Sandie Sowler as a Biology teacher in South Africa during the 70s. Because of her I have had an abiding love for these cute, misunderstood furry creatures ♥
