From our archive: While many states have now banned the practice of shackling kids while they're in secure detention, that wasn't always the case. In this video from our archive, go behind the scenes with our camera crew and see the raw footage of a day in the life of detained teenagers, as we follow detention center staff and detained teens on the most dramatic day of all: court day. This video shows exactly what it's like when kids in detention are lined up and leg shackled as they prepare to be marched through the halls and upstairs to holding cells while they await their court hearing. During the process, detention center staff talk to the kids about how they're doing and how they feel. The video features kids you've watched elsewhere here on our channel, including brothers Kenneth and Kentrell, Morris and Michael.

It's just so sad these kids just keep coming back and coming back they don't even know where to begin in their life without the guidance they need and love and friendship sometimes you have to earn that stuff before you begin to realize who you are

Jude Dimatteo, so true. A childs environment is so important to there stability and future success. AT the end of day they are still kids who made some pretty bad decisions. Often time they can't comprehend or truly understand the consequences of their actions on themselves or their victims.

Agreed! The sad thing though is none of the corrections staff are wearing any masks or trying to contain/prevent further spread of the current pandemic... Bit ridiculous but yes great content from Calamari!

National standards and many state and local laws require that juveniles not be mechanically restrained while in court unless otherwise ordered by the judge due to imminent safety or security threats.

Very true @Eric S. Since the time of this filming, many jurisdictions have banned this practice altogether. One of the things so many kids have told us over the years is how horrible it is to walk into a courtroom in shackles and have their parents have to see them that way. Sad.

What's bizarre here is that they're not even leaving the building, just going down the corridor from the jail to the courtroom. Clearly they're doing it to teach them a lesson, not for reasons of security. I saw the video of the girl's day in court and they handcuff her again after she leaves court to go home. Some states, by the way, have stopped and started again since the time when this was filmed. Some teens sued NY state over shackling in transit in 2006 and it was banned (they had been using belly chains and black boxes, not simple cuffs) but I saw recent reports that the practice had started again and had to be challenged again.

That's just sad that kids are treated like that I mean at least up north pretzel cuffing is comfortable and the leg irons and cuffs are double locked the young lady needs extra cuffs she looks like she is in pain come on now I mean I was once in these kids shoes

Probably to an extent. But juveniles are also usually calmer than adult inmates. Because the environment is different, they are usually in rehabilitation programs or school, shorter terms too. I wonder more about the officers. They seem genuinely compassionate, gentle and interested in the kids lives

“Take him to the bathroom” before going on the bus. This could be a coach trip for school, only it’s Juvenile Detention 🥺 and they aren’t going anywhere nice. Very sad indeed. I hope they changed their paths in life. 🙏🏻 Do you think the staff are normally this nice? We always here how terrible these places can be. Hopefully this lady is one of the good ones. She seems it, but I’m aware it can be for the cameras.

Good question @One Love. All we can tell you is that over the past 23 years we've been doing this week, we've seen some really amazing people who work in these facilities and some really awful ones too. It's a tough job and one that doesn't pay much, but for those who go into it for the right reasons and have the skills to work with kids, the difference they can make is remarkable. Likewise, the harm they can do if they're in it for the wrong reasons can cause damage to last a lifetime. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Greatly appreciated.

They have been in here before on very dangerous crimes. It might just be to protect the officer because if you have free feet than a inmate can kick you and try to harm you even more. I don't know if these kids would but that's what happened in my juvie.

I know these videos are many years old, but in this day and age of wayward kids I think they should still be shackled. This will be the lesson some of them need to never want to return, but the diehards will keep coming back and end up in adult prison for life, whatever that means!!

So...its safe for you to be in an elevator but the children can't walk..? That is so against anything and I liked the lady but u can't talk about facts. That is so immapropriate.jhst making "her" feel comfy. This is slavery. This is SLAVERY. Even the guards are slaves they're just paid.
