Shown here are the kfb (knit front and back), and a variation: knit back and then front. Both yield an increase of one stitch. The knit front and back will leave what looks like a purl bump, but the knit back then front is smooth, and is particularly well suited to stripes where you don't want a second color to show. I often use this variation in my striped patterns!
