And then there are times when you don't have a ball winder and you really REALLY want to wind your yarn and start working with it! Here's how to wind a center pull ball using just your thumb as a nostepinne so you can keep close while working from it and not have it rolling all over.

This is GENIUS! I have a very nice swift/ball winder set up and still wind balls by hand fairly often. I can see that the twist you do of the very beginning would eliminate the "yarn jungle" I occasionally have when starting to knit from a hand wound center pull ball. THANK YOU!!!

My grandmother taught me to knit and had skills like this, but I don't remember them because I was too young. Thanks I feel more connected to that sweet lady.

Ah, clever! I have an actual nosterpinne but haven’t used it yet. I tend to use the empty toilet roll cardboard tube when hand winding whole skeins but this is brilliant for wee skeins
