OMG as someone that doesn’t have perfectly aligned teeth, I hate how aesthetics make people like me seem that our teeth aren’t healthy. My dentist always tells me that alignment does not necessarily dictate that your teeth aren’t healthy.

They might screw up your jaw and bite though. As long as that's fine, however, you don't necessarily need to straighten your teeth. Doing it just for aesthetics when your teeth are only slightly off is unnecessary.

I used to work at a dental clinic and one of the biggest issue is people not being able to brush or floss properly if their teeth are very badly overlapped and can cause decays because of the bacteria build up from all the food getting trapped. Other than that the alignment of your teeth don't really affect the health of your teeth though!

I have this because my teeth are naturally yellow but I have been told my teeth and gums are in good shape and I've never had to have a filling. Tbh I had braces and bridges to replace adult teeth that never came through so I'd have to pay for whiter bridges and constantly whiten my teeth and obsessively up keep them so I've kind of just accepted that they are yellow now 😬

I work at a dental office and it's absolutely ridiculous how the American healthcare system downplays the importance of oral health when it is *so* crucial to overall health. Especially kids! Do not neglect your kid's oral health because "it's just baby teeth", those teeth could stay in there into high school and damage in the baby teeth can affect the new permanent teeth.

This happened to me. One of my adult teeth grew in under the baby tooth. It ended up causing the baby tooth to crack into 3 peices that still didn't fall out on their own. We had to have them pulled. We made so many jokes about it at the time. Because I was eating the school bread when it cracked.

It is realy fascinating, realy bad teeth in german preeschoolers counts to one of the few body and health related issues where we have good leeway to pressure parents into taking care of it. Having very bad primary teeth can damage the permanent ones badly. Every year the "toothfairy" visits every kindergarten group and teaches all children how to brush their teeth and what food is good and bad for them. She would also alarm the kindergarten teachers and parents to children with bad teeth. Crazy to hear about how bad the U.S.A. handles such things. O.o

As a European I've noticed that Americans have a huge obsession with teeth and are often very degrading to those who live in countries where its not seen as so important

I live in Eastern Europe, due to financial situation and just culture, it's not really that important if you have slightly yellow or not super white teeth, it was a surprise to me to learn that in job interviews you can be judged because of it in US. I have friends who have good salaries and could afford to whiten, but they just do not bother.

Its all because of the way they worship their celebrities. Once a celebrity has something, their followers get it too and force others to get it using the "If you don't have it then there's something wrong with you and you're not welcome" method. Also called the Bandwagon Method

I get complimented on my smile and my teeth all the time, even when I travel outside of the US. Pretty much every country I've traveled, at least once someone will make note of my smile and teeth. And in the US, when people make note of it, not once has someone said "your teeth/smile look like X celebrity." White, straight teeth are just prized as a marker of attractiveness-- the same as certain body-types, hair, eyes, etc. Or are you saying that in your country there aren't certain things that are just considered attractive culturally, that have nothing to do with celebrity worship?

Well, truth is, even most countries that have, otherwise, roubust universal healthcare coverage tend to set oral health apart and don't ensure its coverage the way they do with other medical areas. It does depend on the country, but there's definitely a trend, worldwide, of treating oral health financing as a thing aside from healthcare in general (which I never understood why).

!!! my parents grew up in a country that got absolutely wrecked due to ww2 and health, especially oral, just simply wasn't considered. they moved before they had us but unfortunately it impacted on me and my brother by extension as they would only take us to the dentist when it was free and school mandated, which stops after age 12-13. i have cavities i can't get filled because we can't afford it, despite our country supposedly having "free healthcare" 🕺
@rvsone1629
@rvsone1629 2 жыл бұрын
There is a good reason for that. I'm from one of those many countries you mention and my friend who is a dentist says that virtually everyone will have at least some minor issue with their teeth during their lifetime which is different from pretty much every other medicine field. Therefore, even in countries where the healthcare system is far less draconian than in the US, dental care would still have significant impact on the profits and even maybe the proper fuctioning of the system (I personally disagree with the last part). In other fields of medicine, robust madicare systems like in Europe and Canada are relying on probability, they're betting on the fact that more people will not get sick in certain areas than those who will. But in dental, people will always need work on caries, gums, braces etc. Plus if you want to prevent that, dental hygiene is a necessity in this day and age. Those are all rutine practices but very expensive to do/make. TLDR, including dental care would probably make health insurers/health care systems non cost effective.

It's wild isn't it?! One of my favourite (?) facts about the UK's NHS is that at it's introduction in 1948 dentistry WAS included in the whole "free at the point of use". However there was so much need for dental care (33 million artificial teeth in the first 9 months!!) that they started charging for dentures 3 years later. People were finally seeing a dentist after probable years of pain, but it was so in demand that continuing would have bankrupted the NHS!

As a European, I feel like having a perfectly white smile and straight teeth is not "required" to fit in society. It's still a desirable feature but nobody is expected to have a straight smile (it's still a priviledge). Maybe the fact that dental healthcare in America is more expensive makes having straight teeth more an indicator of a social/economic status that people want to achieve. People want to be perceived as rich, not healthy, and I think social media really reinforces this trope. I had my braces at 22 and I found out that the majority of "teeth problems" actually derive from bone structure (usually a small jaw that can't "fit in" all the teeth) or wrong swallowing, which are things that cannot be changed easily, sometimes even braces are useless, cause your teeth will come back to their original position. That's why a lot of people here don't want to waste their money fixing their perfectly healthy teeth just cause they're crooked. I think younger people nowdays are more pressed than adults, though

Yeah.. a lot of people (almost everyone I know actually) had had some kind of braces in their lives, it's often done as a child because it's reimbursed until you're 16 here (as far as I know lol). It's often only to straighten the teeth or to prevent issues; I had mad "rabbit tooth" when I was young and it was this or the surgery at 18 soooo... I overall have nice teeth now, my last dentist check lasted like 5 min haha But depending on how it's done that kind of work can totally destroy your teeth, when my mum was young she'd had braces that caused a lot of damage, and basically made her dental health hell, having as much work done as she had at 30 shouldn't be normal...

In America, getting braces for straight teeth is viewed as the norm. It’s definitely a class thing, straight teeth separates the lower class and the middle class. I’ve known people whose families were lower middle class and had to make sacrifices just to afford braces for their kids. It’s even taken a step further in that it’s viewed as socially gauche for an adult to have braces, because you’re supposed to have had braces when you were a teenager. I’m pretty sure the original target audience for Invisalign was adults that didn’t want to deal with the stigma of having braces.

teeth and their effect on mental heath is so real man. I used to have a big gap in my two front teeth and it honestly made me feel so bad about myself and think that everyone was judging me. The worst part about it is that they were. I guess it is sort of fashionable now to have a gap but people can still be so rude. Before I got braces I remember drawing a picture of lips with a gap for an art project and all of my friends saw it and laughed at it. I don't have the gap anymore because I just hated my teeth and my smile and got braces cause of the pressure that I felt. I will still find something to hate about my smile though no matter how many years of braces I've gone through. The way that beauty standards can just rot your mental health even when you conform is a mind fuck.

The orthodontists do this as it's literally part of their training, their job is to bring your tooth into as ideal of an alignment as possible while keeping in mind the aesthetics (which is trying to bring your natural teeth to the standard of dental morphology while keeping in mind a tooth's natural variation). Orthodontists look at every angle of your teeth critically in relation to adjacent teeth, as it is their job (it's part of how the alignment comes together). Depending on how old you were when your braces came off, the orthodontists should have informed either your parents, both you and your parents, or just you (if you were a legal adult) of what the treatment entailed at its conclusion. I'm genuinely sorry you're traumatized by your former orthodontist and that you miss this part of you that is no longer there. Perhaps one of your front teeth was longer than the other; it's easier for all parties involved to slightly sand down the incisal edge (the part your bite with) to match the other tooth. This way there's much less upkeep over time for the patient. The other option to achieve a more symmetric result is either a porcelain veneer or to use composite material (what is also used for fillings) to lengthen and shape the incisal edge; the latter has the caveat that the orthodontists don't do this themselves (a general dentist would) and that it can discolor over time, making the demarcation between the natural tooth and the composite material fairly visible. Morphologically, the maxillary central incisors (two front teeth on the top) are meant to be longer, but not by much, compared to the maxillary lateral incisors (the smaller and shorter tooth right beside each central tooth). Patients who get braces tend to expect a near-perfect result, and it's the orthodontist's job to get as close as is possible with the case they were given. A lot of patients would actually complain to their orthodontists that they hadn't paid enough attention (or any variation of this) if they had not made sure everything was even before the completion of their case, particularly if the ortho. knew that aesthetics were a concern for the patient. CYA is sadly a large part of the healthcare system, not just the dental side of it. I'm sorry for the long-winded explanation above, I just wanted to make sure everything was clear. For reference, I'm currently in dental school in the United States.

I have what you would consider rather straight teeth. They look like this, sure, but they are not. There's so much more to whether you need braces or not than what you can see in the mirror. You cannot see where one tooth might be slightly in the wrong place and put way too much pressure on another tooth under it. You cannot see how maybe your arches are too aligned when you upper teeth should not rest completely on your bottom ones etc. But you need to go to an orthodontist for a consultation not a dentist if you want a proper diagnosis. A dentist has no business talking about braces beyond suggesting you might wanna visits an orthodontist.

I have a very "people oriented" dentist (I'm from the Czech Republic) and she usually goes for cheap options and tells me I have nice teeth (I have 3 fillings, a veneer on a tooth which I broke a half off of and I don't have all my teeth perfectly white AND I have slightly crooked L2, R2, L3, R3 which isn't very visible). But man, social media really fucked me up. Thanks to it, the US teeth standards are getting into Europe and it kinda scares me. My dentist has never suggested me braces. To her my teeth are fine. But looking at us teeth standards and more and more people here trying tacky whacky teeth whitening things has made me very self conscious in the past. Nowadays I'm pretty grateful for what I have. I *only* shaved off some enamel on 2 of my teeth, cause I was trying to whiten them. Now I have to get it sorted from time to time, my dentist puts some magic water on it and it stops being sensitive. I'd never use a whitening strip.

An orthodontist is the one who should tell you about treatment not a general dentist. Sometimes braces are recommended because of "bite" issues, which can put more pressure on the wrong type of teeth, muscles and even TMJ ( which can lead to continuous headaches, specially when waking up, some people even experience pain ....) If it just for esthetic reasons and that wasn't your priority, no real point on getting them.

Crown and Veneers ARE NOT THE SAME. A crown is usually recommended or necessary if you had a root canal treatment, if you had fracture the tooth, or if you are getting a bridge to replace a missing tooth ( this is old since now implants are the norm) . Veneers on the other hand are esthetic, done in healthy teeth, the shave down is extremely minimal. The " shark teeth" is done for crowns, not veneers. The reason why they look so fake is because either the dental lab is not good or the dentist is not sending the right information when it comes to the shades, gradients and such.

It's sickening that dental care isn't included in US health care! For instance, I get loads of cavities because apparently there's a genetic enzyme in my saliva that wears down enamel quicker than others; one of my friends was born without her canine teeth so she had to get special dentures made, and another had a wisdom tooth grow in sideways which required major work to be done. There are so many weird issues specifically involving teeth that are not necessarily cosmetic and definitely not the fault of the person. Great video, but damn, instead of saying you didn't have the expertise, I really wish you had said "experteeth" lol! ;)

Most orthodontists and dentists will be honest with you and tell you whether you will NEED braces for dental health reasons, or for purely aesthetic reasons. I needed mine for health reasons as my adult teeth grew in so crooked that I would never have been able to clean them properly. But about half of the kids in high school did not have braces or just minimal braces not because they couldn't afford them, but because they weren't needed.

Reading these comments make me feel so seen. I’m a victim as well of the over work done by the dental and especially the orthodontics industry. They botched me. My mother justified it, thinking that she was doing the best for me. They convinced her to put an expander in my mouth as an 8 and 9 year old and braces on me from 10 to 14 years old. $$$$$! I should have spent that time learning how to properly care for my teeth, letting them finish growing in as they should, instead braces were such a hassle to clean daily so it was hard for me to upkeep at such a young age. When the braces finally came off I had and still to this day have markings on my teeth from where the cement was on my teeth for so long. I now see that having a smaller mouth is how my genetics made me and was not a problem that needed fixing. I should Not have had all that work done at that time in my life. I have constant headaches since the expander. I am going to need four teeth pulled because the quality and integrity of my teeth are so poor. My back teeth are positioned weirdly so the dentists now are at a loss as to what they can do to help- other than to just pull them out. I’m 26 years old.

Sugar is not actually the cause of tooth decay. Tooth demineralization and microbiome dysbiosis are the causes. Meaning, respectively, when your teeth don’t have enough minerals, and when your bacteria are imbalanced-basically the overactive bacteria eat away at your weak teeth. Sugar can sometimes exacerbate these conditions and so it often gets blamed, but really vitamin K2 deficiency is a much greater cause of tooth demineralization. And microbiome dysbiosis is caused be SOOO MANY THINGS: environmental toxins, stress, low-protein diets, low-carb diets, low-fat diets, excessive raw foods, being sedentary, industrial seed oils like soy, canola, corn, peanut, sunflower, etc.

It is also not recommended to use whitening agents on restorative work, i.e. fillings, crowns, dentures, veneers, etc., as the abrasives in the whitening agent will wear down and/or scratch the material…

Here in Chile having braces is the thing, because it has become less expensive more adults (including myself) can afford them, but it is still a sign of status because it's not so cheap either. Also having extremely white teeth is seen as weird, there's still a pressure to have straight and slightly white teeth but not so extreme as the US, and I'm afraid social media is changing that

Hi Mina, I'm a dentist and I loved your video! Very interesting look at the history of dentistry. The only comment I would make is that professional bleaching doesn't strip the enamel at all these days. It is much preferred to veneers in that it is not destructive, but it can only lighten the teeth so much. Best to go to a dentist and not use these at home kits because they could be destructive if you have undiagnosed dental issues. Great work on the video!

This is always interesting to hear... the expectation of having perfect teeth is definitely higher in the US than in most other countries. You can have a career in Europe without ever doing anything to your teeth, and even though it is marketed of course and it is a thing we see all the time thanks to US media, most people just don't care quite that much. When I was little basically every kid had to get braces, and I remember that my mother was vehemently against it since she thought it would damage the teeth. I still have slightly misaligned teeth but I never felt insecure about it (though my dentist told me to maybe get braces, but those get only covered by our universal healthcare if you're a child. And I couldn't find ANY reason to do sth that expensive and painful when I'm perfectly fine with how I look) I don't know, I think there is way too much fuss about it and I would prefer to see more movie stars with their natural teeth. In the end, taking care of your teeth the way they grew, if there are no other health issues, is still the best thing to do.

Sister, let me talk about irony. I have worked in the dental industry on and off since 2000. I have literally had dental coverage like twice in all those years. I worked for Kaiser Dental 00-02 and I married a soldier in '04. Dental coverage is optional for dependents so we had coverage while he was active duty. I went back in the field in 2014 and I have worked in offices where you either wait really long to get care in office. My last office was a pediatric dental office so I had no dental but he cut us a check in July for 1k. Let's say that usually went for bills. Hell, I got my teeth cleaned with a Groupon. My current office is a fairly high end office and I won't have coverage until next summer. 1 year with my office. Dental insurance has really grabbed small business offices by the b*lls because they've lowered their reimbursement after the big P by more than 4% and offices are spending more on staffing (many hygienists asked for raises or flat out quit), supplies have gone up etc etc.

most health outcomes are tied to things we can’t control, including diabetes, cholesterol, and weight. teeth too. i’m autistic & chronically ill and can’t keep up with self care sometimes bc i can barely stand up. i had 3 root canals by the age of 20 bc i have a genetic disorder where my molars didn’t fully seal in the middle (Eds). since the last dentist noticed that and filled them in, i’ve had just a couple tiny cavities in the next 17 years. again: most people’s health outcomes are totally outside their control. only the illusion of “virtue” makes us believe health is under our control

Childhood health, genetics, lifestyle (smoking especially) and diet, and even how you breathe or sleep (mouth breathers and teeth grinders will have difficulty sooner) can affect dental health. In my family, it’s as simple as the pH of saliva. My sister is more basic, like our father, and she has dental problems despite tens of thousands of dollars in intervention. I’ve had severely depressed episodes and a lot of natural issues (impacted molars and baby teeth that never shed) but no cavities… until I started cannabis for my anxiety and dry mouth damaged my gums and teeth, even making them more crooked.

@@Pollicina_db yeah, I don't eat sweets very often, I think that might be it. I eat mainly fruits, veges, and chicken or fish. I cut out most processed foods and carbs

I’m glad you brought up the topic of how access to dental care is super classist. I’m dealing with that issue right now and it sucks.

When i was a Directioner I remember Niall Horan beeing hated by his haters because of his teeths. They appeared "unhealthy and messed up". But he has braces after! It helped me accepting my own braces seeing him as a celebrity wearing them in public! :)
