Play who you want. U will struggle with tekken in the beginning no matter who you play. Tekken is played different then any other fighting game so it will take time. Best advice pick a char who will allow u to stick to the game and have fun. Dont worry about if there good and dont look long term. In the beginning just have fun yall! I'm with you with Leroy, let me add Lily on beginner friendly as I main her. With her you got a nice beginner combo with high damage, easy move list/whiff punish, can just spam ff+4/hop kick from ground up and easily adjust step by step. A pro tip, don't listen to others that if you want to learn a certain character watch the best in the world who's using it as it varies to who your opponent is, you need to practice if you want be better on each character.

Thanks man. This is the best intro video I've seen so far in years. I'm still struggling here... See I started with Steve as an enthusiast, then went Miguel and ran into range issues. Fahkumram came out, and I went full enthusiast with him -- which is, let me tell you, very dangerous. Winning feels better, losing feels like you someone beat you up in real life. So much that I got ranked anxiety after getting mid-crush launched by Alisa many rounds in a row. I might still use him with a change of perspective if I find out how he compares to Shaheen. I am currently debating between picking up Shaheen or ASUKA... I don't know if Asuka's parry will be unproductive in the long run. And I don't know if Fahkumram can do as good as Shaheen, but I hope it's not too good either, cause I hate taking shortcuts. I heard he's a well rounded character with great basic tools, but also that his hurtbox model is pretty weird... which could mean anything. What's your take on this struggle?

I picked Armor King and i like him.But he feels hard for me to be consistent with,requires me to have good movement and whif punish.But the execution doesnt let me grasp fundamentals. Use the Character you want to use, Even if its hard or not, weak or strong, Its for the sake of your fun towards the game, If you use the character you want to use, then your fun factor rises, It's an important component that gives you fun and excitement into learning 'em

I played every Tekken since 3, as a casual, countless hours in Tekken 4, 5 and 6 playing with every character but especially Eddy. Now, in 2021, I bought Tekken 7 to play it "right" and started with Eddy, let's see what happens

You're right about Kazumi. I started out with her because of your first video and had a fairly hard time in the Green Ranks up to the Yellow Ranks. She really flows easily in my hands, but I'm gonna hit the lab to learn some more stuff with her before I proceed with Ranked Matches.

Paul Phoenix is pretty easy to pick up. His core moves are very manageable. I don't think you have to know all the moves for your character in general. Many moves are just adding some superficial nuance but don't really affect the game plan.

Jin Kazuya Heihachi moves and combos are simple only if you can execute them properly, thats where it gets difficult.

I agree with most of what you said & in terms of if you just wanna jump into the game as a casual. Spot on. Now what about if you want to pick that will teach you fundamentals & defense that a lot of these other characters won't teach you? That's where the Mishimas come into play & I think if anyone is truly serious then they should pick these characters. Especially some players hate string heavy characters like I do. I prefer execution with fundamentals.

Ravens always been my main, progress came slow but I don't regret it. I'll probably pick up Nina or Jin next.

I just got this game today, I haven’t played through all the characters yet nor have done any of the story battles with any of the characters but Eddy is not a new character. Eddy Gordo has been around since Tekken 3 (I vaguely remember playing Tekken 3) and his moves are very similar to Christie (She was in Tekken 4-6). So far, I really like playing all the Mishimas including Kazumi, Eddy, Marshall Law, Asuka Kazama, and Lucky Chloe. I’ve been playing the Tekken series since Tekken 4

A lot of people say stay away from execution heavy characters if you're new. I would say stay away from execution heavy characters if you're just playing casual and don't really plan to try and improve over time, but If you're new and pick up Kaz or Akuma , you actually have a lot to work with whenever it comes time to try and improve. Akuma was my first character and I learned so much more by levelling my game up with him than I would have by learning with Paul, Katarina etc. Akuma is unique and in my opinion truly easier than mishimas, as he can allow you to bypass fundamentals. Nobody says this but when you play akuma it is just constant option select, if you think they're going high you hit d2 or d3, going low you can jump, plus frame pressure (hunting hawk for example) can be DP'd through. He's easy in that sense. Currently learning heihachi to pick up those fundamentals I missed, but the execution you pick up from akuma makes OTFG and EWGF as easy as doing a DF1. Most overlooked beginner character for sure

As someone who has played a few characters as main as a total newcomer; starting with lilit transitioning to kazumi and finally to my true main feng... I think tekken is something else to play. The mishimas, specially kazuya and kazumi are characters that require of the player to know the matchups where as feng you can get away with lots of bullshit no one expects. I play very casualy and I think even tho I've had a great experience with feng, the mishimas are the best way to learn the game per se. They force you to understand fundemantals like no other characters. Even tho' many people might think that kazumi is a boring character, its thanks to my experience playing her at low ranks that I understood what tekken is about; and what made me find enjoyment in playing feng in the end. If you dont understand the fundementals you can't understand what to abuse with characters that are really cheesy anyway. So as a starting character I would recomend Kazumi heavily, as well as kazuya: characters with reduced move-lists that make you make the most out of them, and understend one very simple play style so you can move away from it after some time and abuse the specific tools other characters have. Tekken is a heavy time investement to learn, but even playing casually after you put in the hours to understand the game pays out heavily with lots of satisfaction. Dont get discouraged and keep playing and having fun! Thats what its all about in the end.

Play Lei , he is super fun! Try to play him with no stances, just staple combos, and the basic moves jab, df1, d4, etc, you will figure it out. He has everything that you need, and much more. So you Will be always learning new things, slowly, and forever. If you want more moves, try using one more stance at the time until you master all 15. Differently from Nina, Hwoarang, King, Feng, Jin, etc Lei has many moves but he doesn't ultimately need all of them. His game plan outside the stances is simple: move a lot and let your opponent whiff attacks. If you want to pressure a bit just use df1, db4,4 jabs, d4 and razor rush. Thats all, if you think you're stuck in a certain level, just learn one more stance and its utility. More offence - tiger, raw 50/50 - panther, etc. Just search for it ,it will be fun. Lei is the most fun character IMO

Well, I think you should play whoever you wanna play as. Because once you like the character you play, win or lose, no matter how hard it is, you'll put your time to learn them. I personally main Bryan, and for God's sake, almost all of his moves need executions, his combos, especially his legendary Taunt Jet Uppercut, it's hard AF. But I like to play as Bryan, so even I keep losing, I still keep learning about his Key Moves, how and when to do it.

Jin is NOT beginner friendly. But I love him.

I started with Chloe when I first play Tekken, she's fun and hurt a lot. After some time, I learn Katarina. She has more execution, but well, still easy. And then for some reason I'm maining Lei right now. 😂

im coming from mortal kombat 10 and 11. now tekken 7 is VERY different to me after you get past the “fighting game fundamentals.” i REALLY want to play Eddy simply because he is so different. but i do not like playing weak characters, because im a VERY competitive person. so does anyone think that learning Eddy would be fine for me?

I just started and have been using Bob, but I want to start using Kazuya or Devil Jin to force myself to learn better fundamentals. Armour King, King, Steve, and Dragunov also interest me just in general, along with Akuma, Geese, and Fahk-em-raw dlc characters. Leeroy also seems cool, but I'm avoiding him since everyone complains about him so much.

I have a different opinion for the mishimas in general. Yes execution is an important factor that will get you stuck in intermediate ranks, but what really makes certain mishimas difficult, expecially kazuya, is that if you don't know much about the character you're against, ur screwed. Heihachi, jin, and deviljin can at least go more on the offensive, but kazuya really can't. His setups are really weak, his 50/50 is really strong but it only shines on oki.

I was thinking of either starting with king, devil jin or kazuya which do you think would be more beginner friendly (ps I do have experience with fighter games not Tekken tho but since we have a lot of time on our hands I can work on mastering a character)

I started playing seriously about 8 months ago and went with Leo. She has a tool for every situation, really strong generics, good frame data and fairly low execution but no real gimmicks or easy strats. Green ranks were rough and I had to really focus on defence and the basics of the game. But it was worth it, now I'm at an intermediate level, I'm properly prepared to keep advancing.

This is helpful, but maybe if you made a script for the video, it would be a little shorter and have a biiit better conclusions.

Imo if you played street fighter or any 2d fighter, tekken's movements and frames will be A LOT easier to read. I'd say jin is very very beginner friendly IF the user knows how to korean backdash, play it safe, patience, and wavedashes to close the gap. Yes, very technical and execution specific. BUT, jin's combo kit is so damn good, i swear back 2+1, 1+2+3, back 1 wavedash cancel, and the good'ole hop kicks never let me down lmao

If you are playing mishimas or Jin or Bryan you are making playing tekken exponentially difficult for you at the cost of looking cool as a beginner or intermediate player.All the players mostly start with these characters then they get their ass kicked left,right and centre by characters like law,king and Katarina and right now Leroy and fakhumram then they realise that the players who are kicking their ass are also not much better at tekken fundamentals then them and they also start playing characters like law,dragunov,king,Leroy and fakhumram and to an extent Nina and that is the reason why you see these characters so much when ever you play online.

Im trying so hard to EWGF but execution is my weakness. I have a ton of fun with Kazuya, but i really wish they gave you a bigger window for execution. I'm indeed hitting that wall.

how about with season 4?

For me its katarina and claudio. They are beginer friendly at first then they became advance with mote expiriance. Katarina is all or nothing, high risk high reward character whith most of her attack because she is classified as a glass cannon. Good offence but defense is mediocere. Claudio have good attacks but players must remeber that all attack must hit to charge starburst, and starburst gave players some attacks that require some set ups but only be used once and starburst need to be charge again.
