Tekki Shodan is deeper than you think! This kata is perfect for practicing hip rotation, Kiba Dachi (Horseride Stance), and relaxation of the upper body. Take it step by step and slowly at first, to get the tips correctly!
One more thing. The little details can be different within Shotokan organizations such as JKA, JKS, and WKF. But the most important thing is to understand the differences and the reasons behind them. Well, enjoy!

Thank you so much for this video! I am learning this kata for my next grading. I get the hang if it in the dojo but forget half of it when I go to practice at home. (I don't know if it is my age or not as much free time. I don't remember things as well as I did in my 20's/30's or before I had teenagers. 😆) This has helped me greatly. Thanks again for another spot on tutorial. I remember many, many years ago the discussions and sometimes disagreements over the placement of the left foot in the first movement. Seems silly now because as you explained "nothing is wrong in Karate" over thinking anything is a waste remembering we are practicing a fighting art, not a dance with emphasis on "ART" . I would love your interpretation of my favorite Kata "Gankaku/Chinto" thanks again.

@@KarateDojowaKu That's one of those "lost in translation" things maybe. Or just a difference in style. The way I learned it on the Kenkojuku style of shotokan it was called Nijushi. Slight differences specially at the beginning. No sidekick, instead going for a raised kneed to avoid a sweep, etc. You can find some examples here. Just a quibble, but Choki Motobu wrote that the elbow strike isn't necessarily an elbow strike -- that it stands for or represents any counter attack with the rear hand. So it could be an elbow strike or it could be something else depending on the circumstances.

The Bunkai taught is a Japanese version- totally appropriate for “Tekki” Shodan, but the kata was developed in Okinawa. There are no “blocks” in Okinawan Karate. I was taught the kata in 1970 (Shidokan), and the bunkai in Japan, learning decades later from a master in Okinawan Karate, that what I learned as blocks in Naihunchi’s bunkai, were actually route-Mitsui (nerve strikes).

Sensei, could I ask what you're thoughts are on cross-training? I am currently a green belt in Shotokan and have tried Goju-Ryu for 4 lessons as our Dojo offers both by different instructors. But my Shotokan Sensei is discouraging me from continuing as he feels that it would impact my Shotokan. The two Goju-Ryu instructors see no problem with it (one of them has a brown belt in Shotokan as well). The most notable differences I have found is that Goju-Ryu uses Shanchin-dachi, Neko-ashi dachi, and Seiko-dachi where Shotokan only really uses it in certain Kata. And the Goju-Ryu has taught me things that we never do in Shotokan, like break rolls and with more emphasis on close ranged combat. I love both and find them too different to confuse them. He feels it will ruin my stances, but the stances used exist in both. Any advice?
@karatekid3233
@karatekid3233 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say do both, if you can. I have trained in a lot of different styles and to me, its all just Karate as well. I have only noticed beneficial changes. Tho it depends om what you wanna learn and what both Schools teach you, but overall it wont hurt your advancement at all. Speaking from my experience of course.

Thanks! This is my favorite kata. I do two double hand blocks toward the front then grab the opponents gi and backfist the face rather than the way you do it. It may be because my teacher's teacher had a black belt in Kyokushin though he called it Shotokan back in the day. My lineage is complicated, but the teaching was excellent. and it made me so much better. I wonder about Bunkai. For example, when you demonstrate the first move with the elbow strike, you move a step towards your opponent so your strike will reach him. When you do the kata, you do not step. Most Bunkai seems that way, not exactly like the kata as you have to adjust to the opponent.

As much as I love the performative nature of this type of Bunkai, I have never understood how it fits with training. The attacks in these Bunkai examples are always karate attacks... oi zuki or gyaku zuki as an example... In my head I believed this Bunkai was meant for sparring application but knees and elbows are illegal moves... Based on my experience I think Bunkai should be kept to the okinawan roots of its execution as many Japanese & Western influences have filtered it away from its original purpose of self protection. Another kind of key thing for me is using everything the kata is telling you. We use directions of travel for a reason. I often feel like a lot of key elements of kata are ignored in this kind of Bunkai... e.g: .Embusen .Hikite .Turning Nevertheless this video is cool and you have fantastic stance and control!
