In this video I try to figure out how to repair a faulty Tektronix P6137 400MHz oscilloscope probe.

Great story. But is it fixed? The centre conductor can still be intermittent anywhere along the cable, and flexing the cable (normal use) will cause signal integrity problems, and erroneous measurements. Not to mention it isn't fixed if it isn't crimped (not as easy as he makes it out to be.)

Yes it is fixed, there is no other damage to the cable. And crimping is as easy as closing your fist around a crimper with the correct sized die. It's not an arcane process.

Rarely would a wire be broken in the middle unless it got pinched by something.

Nice to see someone taking a crack at a repair and having the 'nads to show the full process. There are always those who insist on perfection. I sit squarely in your camp...inspect carefully and give it a go and see what happens. You learn something in the process. You did exactly what you state in your description! Thank goodness. I've kept an extra broken probe for my 2465A in a box just in case you came along someday. Now if anyone has the precise properties of that lossy coax for the other one I want to repair... Btw, I can't see why this wouldn't work for the whole series of probes, like the P6138A/B; as long as A. you're not too picky, or B. you have gear with the resolving power to make sure you've got it perfect. From experience, the probes work up to 350MHz or higher, even with a not-so-perfect repair. Last thing, your guess was really good on where the discontinuity was, but if it didn't occur to you, or if you don't have one, may I recommend the famous 74AC14 Schmitt Trigger Inverter TDR video from fellow Tek enthusiast w2aew (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8mAadpj1MqrhZc.html). Apologies if you thought of that/actually have a real pulse gen.

Thanks for the link! He does make some good videos. There is one brand new cable in factory sealed bag cable being sold on Yahoo Japan at the moment. I bought one for another probe that was too damaged to fix so now I have two repaired probes. :)

i need to repair mine p5122, the compensation cap got ruined, how do u remove the spring part in the front, bruteforce?

Yeah, the BNC collar just pulls of with some force, a flat screwdriver can be used to gently lever it off.

I'm not sure where in the video I talked about these 'T-coils', and I already knew about lossy transmission lines. If you are referring to the discussion on the tekscopes groups.io, I ignored almost all of that shouting match.
