Thanks! It just the right balance on the tone knob and EQ on the amp. But, one of the main things is that I never run the volume at full. Always around 75%. This takes off some of the natural compression you get from the pickup, darkens it up a little and becomes more touch sensitive.

Thanks for the kind words! Cool to hear you've picked up the guitar and are trying to learn some jazz! Sadly I don't have any tabs for the. It's all improvised. I believe there are some good tab books out there of Wes Montgomery which I would suggest checking out. Not sure how you might feel your ear is, but in my opinion the best way to transcribe solos is by learning it by ear. Much harder and more time consuming, but it Is great for your development in jazz! If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Yea, you can definitely get a great jazz tone out of a single coil in the neck! I actually just played a straight ahead jazz gig the other day with my Suhr strat that has a single coil in the neck... it sounded great! I think it's all about finding the right balance between the tone and volume knobs.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, I believe tele's are one of the most versatile guitars on the market personally. The humbucker is really nice for the jazz stuff, and I have a coil tap on it so I can still get it to be spanky if I want.

@@WeZte Yes, I believe you can still get a good jazz tone for a single coil. Check out my video that's my strat vs my archtop. The start has a single coil in the neck and it's a great jazz tone! Even though a strat pickup is different from a tele pickup you can get a nice jazz tone from the tele.

Sounds great! How do you like your Quilter amp? Would you say it’s loud enough for gigs?
@jordanfinn1123
@jordanfinn1123 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m loving my Quilter for certain things. It pairs very nicely with my archtop guitars, but I’m not sold on it with my solid bodies. The Quilter definitely feels more like a tube amp than any solid state I’ve ever played, but there is something in the “body” of the sound missing with the solid body guitars to my ear. So I use tube amps when gigging with my solid body guitars. As for loudness, this amp definitely packs a punch! It hangs with just about any drummer I’ve played with... but, I play with an organ trio and it does have a hard time keeping up with that. It’s a very loud gig. I’ve been considering getting a ProBlock 200 for those gigs, but I really like the 3 band EQ on the mini series! So I’ve just been using my tube amp for those gigs.

Very nice indeed .. Do you visualize the fretboard in scale/box shapes as the chord changes arise?
@jordanfinn1123
@jordanfinn1123 5 жыл бұрын
Hmm... that is a very good question. I know a lot of guys that visualize the fretboard in shapes, and when I teach scales, I do teach them in shapes. But, that's not how I visualize the fretboard. When a certain key or scale comes up that I need, I just see all of those notes across the fretboard. There is a great masterclass that Gary Burton did, and I liked what he said when he talked about visualizing scales. He said, as soon as someone names a key, all of those notes on the vibraphone then glow in his head and he sees every note possible in that key. That's exactly how I visualize it. That allows me to move both vertically and horizontally across the fretboard. Hope this helps!
@roba1899
@roba1899 5 жыл бұрын
I think that explains it. For instance, I can see in small 3 string shapes and I can reinforce the pattern out loud in a linear fashion which is plain/predictable but I still have trouble jumping around within it. I'm wondering if your vision of the fretboard can be taught with practicing shapes or if you just have to be born with it. Great stuff regardless .. oh and I hope you don't mind, but I posted your video to r/jazzguitar on Reddit and it got lots of upvotes/love.
@jordanfinn1123
@jordanfinn1123 5 жыл бұрын
Yea, I hear what you are saying. Throughout my years of teaching I have somewhat come to the conclusion that I think some people are born with it more than others to an extent. @@roba1899 When I was in music school they taught scales by using shapes, and so that I how I teach it now... but I have never thought of it that way personally. Even though I teach the different positions (Because it's more visual for students), I always explain the way I personally think about the fretboard as well.

Any tips on amp settings for this tone?
@jordanfinn1123
@jordanfinn1123 5 жыл бұрын
Here are the exact settings on my Quilter. Treble and mid are both set at 10 o'clock, and the bass is set at 2 o'clock. I have the tone knob on my Suhr rolled off about 70%, but I think the best advice for getting this tone as well is that I roll off my volume knob about 30%. What this does is it takes off that high end, trebly bite that I feel solid bodies get. It gives it a more "even" and "warm" tone on the treble strings.
