...I have 54 years old and never saw snow in my life, but these moves are something like a "drop knee turn" or a "drop knee cutback" in surfing, back in the day when I use to ride my eleven footer down here in Brazil...Awesome!!!

this is the best video i've seen for offering a slow breakdown of how to telemark backwards. This was very helpful.

"Long as you're laughing," . . . the right idea to get you through life or down the slope . . . I like the butter thing too.

On the west coast there is Bear Valley Telemark festival. This video makes me glad I'm on the west coast enjoying California sunshine.

@SovietKardinal - I'm an instructor and I have skied with Biff many times. Sometimes in order to really understand your equipment and how you effect it you have to isolate a movement pattern in a drill so you can really feel it. Sometimes you have to go to novice terrain so you can focus on what you are feeling and then move on to more difficult terrain. If you don't understand what he is doing here then you don't understand how to ski to your fullest potential.

I am skiing on the Axl's from 22 Designs and love them. I had G3's for four seasons previously.

All hail “the knee dippin fairies”! Best skiers I know! Glad to be part. Free your heel and your ass will follow!

@SovietKardinal A modern tele turn does NOT force the lead ski forward BEFORE the turn. This is one of the big changes that's happened in the last 10 years or so. There are infinite variety of timing of when the lead changes, from just after turn finish to delayed until the skis are turning, to changing while the skis are unweighted. If you're still putting your front foot forward and especially on shaped skis, you're missing most of the fun!

@wheeliebike17 This was shot at Belleayre. There has to be a tele instructor in Lake Placid, you have everything there.

Biff has taught all over the world. He disappears like a ghost in thick, steep trees and is equally at home in any couloir....well anywhere actually. Skiers like Biff are on the cutting edge because they spend a great deal of time pushing the limits and thinking about what is going on instead of just regurgitating what everyone else says. You should take a lesson from him. Seriously.

Hmmm... Pretty big difference in HOW to teach telemark skiing in N.A. compared to Scandinavia.. BUT telemark is all about having fun! Keep up the good work! /JPS

@SovietKardinal As a 25 year veteran of back country telemark turning, I think you're dead wrong. Today's teaching gets people having fun turning far more effortlessly. Thank old turn, foot forward, highly unstable side to side except for a very few is gone (except for die-hards) . I'll never forget the teaching statement: "put your skis in position, then wait" Ya. Today, the new turn, on modern skis is 1/4 the work, far more stable, a lot faster and just plain wayyyyyy more fun. try it

@SovietKardinal Funny. Go take a few lessons and they'll tell you to start in a regular turn and then move into the telemark position. Or go to telemark tips and watch Umas! QUOTE: "it is best for the telemark lead change to occur over the course of the entire turn, rather than in a rush at the start" Besides - this is a beginner lesson - as pointed out.

@fr3agnt It´s harder to learn, yes, but its very rewarding once you get the hang of it. Normally its easier for you to turn one way than the other. Work on the hardest side first, and try sharper and sharper turns. Important thing is to go deep - that way you´ll have better balance. This way you gain confidence, and can go faster and faster too. I feel very inhibited with regular alpine skiing, telemark skiing is a lot more "free".

I just started telemark skiing this year in New Hampshire....Today I went back country in CO, Hidden Vally... You can't fake turning in backcountry conditions like you can on a slope that as be groomed.. North East skiing gives you a false sense of telemark.

@fr3agnt These are students and a teacher breaking down and / or exaggerating movements to show them how it's done. Could be that it's all in the eye of the beholder.

@SovietKardinal Are talking about the instructor or the students? It's kind of a harsh thing to say about students. If you don't like the instructor's style, take it up with NATO. They certified him.

I have heard that telemark is actually harder to learn. Is it possible to go fast using telemark method vs alpine? Newbie looking to learn. Thanks.
