I used to come home from school and had a routine where I just checked all the pages I’d memorise. But saddest of all? If we couldn’t find out the football results on a weeknight? I’d be watching the never-quite-quick enough refresh of current scores. There’s nothing more exciting than watching a penalty shoot out via a text screen update lol
@mickmickymick6927
@mickmickymick6927 5 жыл бұрын
Those scores were a nightmare, I remember it would stay as 0-0 until the game ended in real life, then about 5 minutes later, it'd update to something like 4-2. They were completely unreliable.

That revamped intro theme is pretty damn good. I grew up reading Digi. Would read it before school and then when i was a working person I'd stay up late for when it switched over to the next days reviews. Always credited Digitiser and Red Dwarf as being the two biggest influences on my sense of humour. I say credited... blamed maybe? Those little bits you had between segments with the Speccy loading stuff... is that a new thing you're doing cos I like it. Neat little interstitial element for bringing up the next segment that.

I spent most of the time cheating on Bamboozled back in the day, if you went through the Fastext buttons quickly, you could see which was the right answer when the page number was different to the other three answers, made the game so easy... :P Don't really recall Digitiser myself though, but seeing the Teletext pages & pictures brings back the nostalgia... :D

CRT TVs are awesome because of the physics going on inside of them. A "gun" fires a stream of electrons that pass between two pairs of deflection yokes, which are electromagnetic coils across the Y and X axes. By carefully adjusting the fields between the pairs, the electrons are aimed to pass through tiny holes in what's known as a shadow mask (in non-Trinitron TVs). Sony Trinitrons used a series of metal wires instead of a plate of metal, which gave them better definition on one axis (I think it was vertical) at the cost of extra weight. A 36" Trinitron weighed in at over 230lbs, with larger models topping out at over 400. I think I still have extra lines in my hands from moving these beasts with my dad as he ran a repair business. That hard plastic edge on the stand was atrociously painful when you were climbing up a flight of stairs. lol Anyway, by striking the tiny holes in the shadow mask at just the right angles, the electrons then pass out to strike the phosphorous coating on the glass, exciting the particles to light up in red, green, and blue at varying levels. These were way more interesting that LCD, Plasma, or LED TVs. Well, plasma was kinda neat because it's noble gases being electrocuted, and LCD untwists liquid crystal helices to allow a backlight to pass through....so LED is the most boring of all. :P

LED is just a type of LCD. Only difference is it uses an LED back-light instead of the more traditional lighting.

Ah good old Ceefax. I remember reading digitizer a great deal. They had an April fools story that Radiohead were making a game. I also had a pen pal I'd met on there named Sarah, we used to swap tapes with each other. She introduced me to smashing pumpkins and Ministry at the age of 12. Amazing.

I loved the articles Mr Biffo used to write for EDGE magazine back in the 2000s. Had no idea of the magazine on teletext which is a shame as I am sure I would have really enjoyed it. My uncle always used to put those slow subtitles on with teletext which drove me frikkin insane as a kid which coupled with the slow speed of the service kinda put me off messing with it much. Great vid and look forward to the show.

I loved Digitiser too! I also remember Jackie Swift and then John Earls on Planet Sound. They always had some pretty good retorts to people on the letters page called The Void. They took no prisoners either. I remember being with an ex-girlfriend on the day Teletext died in 2009. She didn't understand my sadness. We split up two years later but I should have known at the time it was never going to last!
