Hahahaha! Exactly! We visited my cousin (I have tons in England and Eire) in the UK some years back. She was packing food, water, and sundries for a long trip (her words). I said, "How many hours away is this place [wherever we were going]"? She said, "two hours." My husband and I burst out laughing. She asked what was funny - we were like, "2 hours ... that's a trip to shop FOR sundries, food, etc., but we don't bring that kind of gear for 2 hours." All in your perspective...

My dad still brags about how he provided a stable environment for my friends and my siblings friends whenever our friends came over to spend the night. Sadly, he's not wrong and some of our friends still say they liked coming over to our house because of the stability, the snacks, and my dad's homemade pancakes. So, I can see how important she is to Barry.

I laughed out loud when he said ‘nowhere in Ireland takes 8 hours to get to’ - as a Scottish child I was subjected to being driven home ‘the scenic route’ from Glasgow to Aberdeen! Stuck in the back seat- in between my two little brothers, so they wouldn’t beat the cr*p out of each other! A journey that should have taken 2 1/2 hours - took 8 1/2 and my Dad was boiling mad by the time we got home and my brothers had finally stopped moaning! Why on Earth my parents thought it was a good idea - is beyond me - especially as I get very car sick! Take the scenic route - they said, It’ll be fun - they said 😂. I’m a Mum myself now and I choose where we will visit based on how quickly we can get there 😂🙈

Srysly why did parents think it would be fun to be in the car? When I was with my 2 brothers going on a summer vacation they would ALWAYS take the longest route and it would always end with someone puking from the combination of heat, car going through the mountains, and sweets we were given to shut up, or a fight between someone, or one of the parents getting mad, forcing us to stop to yell at us, or spilled water, or somebody farting (usually dad) forcing us to stop and vent the car... it was never a good time
@faolan2174
@faolan2174 Жыл бұрын
My dad loved the scenic routes, so he never took the same route twice on a vacation. Difference was, I and my siblings loved it. We grew up being used to long car trips, camping, etc, so it was never a problem for us. But I totally get that if no one else is enjoying the trip and it's making everyone miserable, the parent responsible should take a hint and stop subjecting everyone to that. It's only going to make their journey miserable too, if everyone else is unhappy and complaining.

This is honestly so relatable. I was lucky enough to go abroad... but it was to this random wee town in Germany to stay with my gran. She made us water her entire garden every evening, repeatedly referred to me and my brother as "die Kinder" (we're 21 and 19) and refused to let ANY food go to waste. If we left a quarter of our massive schnitzels on the plate you could bet it would be reheated and served up for lunch the next day. We got through the entire first series of Downton Abbey that week, because it's practically all she has on DVD (and she kept pausing to ask about basic details which the characters would clarify in literally the next scene). She made us watch THREE episodes one night. I mean, it was lovely to see her again, since we hadn't since October. But... wasn't quite the summer holiday I'd imagined.
