I recall watching Barbara Windsor play 'Buttons' in pantomime at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham around 1956. As I grew older I needed more so ten years later I had already switched to Mick McManus at the Festival Inn Trowell (just down the road). They were both immensely entertaining but Barbara was by far the most dangerous. Mick's 'forearm smashes' were inadequate for even kneading dough. But he was a sweet little chap what gave this then lad his autograph, and many years later died of a broken heart within days of his wife passing.

“Thanks for the Memories” 🎵 Oh how me & my old Mum used to love the Saturday wrestling! Les Kellet was her favourite! I’m 73 now! 😂 Brilliant. 👍
@mandoprince1 Жыл бұрын
I loved Les Kellet, he was my favourite back when he was wrestling. If I'd been a couple of years younger I'd probably never of seen him! My parents talked about having seen him as a referee in Newcastle, many years earlier. Modern wrestlers could learn a lot from watching him. Very talented. He played the clown , but from all accounts was genuinely feared by the other wrestlers!😎

Fun fact, my grandpa was a good friend of Big Daddy’s. I’m 14 and started watching wrestling nearly three years ago. When I found that out, I was shocked. It was like it was meant to be. If I ever wrestle, I’m definitely going to pay homage to him x

@stevebrazilio9 ай бұрын
It's funny seeing this all these years later - I used to watch these bouts on World of Sport as a kid in the 70's, I later got into WWE but thought there was too much dramatics and mic hogging, but looking back at this match, it too was all about entertainment - Big Daddy, Kendo and Giant Haystacks were all mates outside of the ring I believe, but as a little kid you believe they are all arch enemies and hate each other!

Big Daddy drew big money in England for years- this just shows u the power of television - as he was really rotten in the ring- just like today - TV makes ur stars - oh yeah he owned the company - imagine that
@jonmeans26377 жыл бұрын
Rip Rogers your correct, tv does make your stars. there were so many wrestlers , who suffered from lack of national tv exposure, who sadly were 1000 times better in ring and on the mic, including yourself. Today is garbage. yes the move sets have changed alot, but not many know how to truly work A match, and can't go out and do a promo on their own, they have to have some goofball writer, who is living vicariously through the wrestler, write out the promos. I've been watching since around 1979, so I've seen so many who truly deserved to be in a better position , but unfortunately for them it wasn't to be. When I see someone like Big Daddy, who if they would have been in the ring with someone like you, would have been gassed in about 30 seconds, but due to politics, and the right tv exposure, became bigger stars than the should have been, It's just wrong

Here, Big Daddy looks quite trim compared to many pie eating years later…. I wonder how many people knew back then that all this was …. planned ? I remember seeing Daddy and Haystacks having a wee laugh together in the changing rooms of the Bath Pavilion. They even posed together for photographs. how do I know? My Father knew Bill the doorman and every second Wednesday in the month, I was allowed in before Show Time… I had an autograph book filled with most of the top Dale Martin promoted Wrestlers… It was always a grand night out … Gold Belt Maxine once sang a song on his Guitar in front of all the wrestlers on the bill, before the crowd arrived. They were all bloody good geezers and top „entertaining“ sportsman. Nothing compared to them..

When ITV started to lose their Saturday afternoon large ratings on World Of Sport every week they got the Promoter:Max Crabtree to re-invent Shirley as this clown which made a mockery of all he accomplished before.
