Np Telmo! Sure thing! Thanks for taking the time to film the videos. Alot of value for aspiring front-end developers. I'm starting to apply for junior front-end positions in San Francisco. Taught myself how to code in the past 2yrs and built a few apps from scratch for my startup projects but I don't have any professional experience or degree in the field. From your experience at interviewing and judging by my portfolio (yatso.me), do you think I would have any issues getting interviews? If so, what can I fix to better present myself as job ready?
@Telmosampaio
@Telmosampaio 7 жыл бұрын
maniaxzero I was in the same position just like yourself, you have a very good portfolio website, I advise you to update your linkedin header statement to let know the companies and recruiters that you are available to get hired, and soon you will have a lot of opportunities. You will get asked a lot to explain the code you used in your projects, so give them a quick refresh to see if theres anything you can improve code wise :)

The workflow question really depends on the type of project. For example a static html website I would use a Photoshop mockup, then go about importing my workflow setup for static sites and then code the website. However, if its a ReactJS based project I would either generate the create-react-app decide about the structure of components, decide on technologies to use then set it up and start coding the application. Its all down to the type of project in the end, some projects are more complicated than others and require a substantial amount of setup, others are simple like the HTML static site.

Well that recruiter never contacted me but I got another interview. Just finished it! He said they should know by tomorrow. The questions were not that technical surprisingly. I got the favorite features of HTML5 question from the video, have you worked on a team or were your projects solo, do you know jQuery, do you know stored procedures, if you were handed a mock design could you replicate it, can you write your own stylesheets, can you write a query. Most of the interview was hearing about the company, I was asked if I had any questions, talked about the future and goals of the company. I think there were a few more questions but I was really nervous so I can't remember all of them. It was really quick, about 20 minutes total. I'll keep you guys updated. Let me know if you have any other questions about the interview :)

I feel like people don't know the new features of HTML5 because it's 3 years old and the standard. People (like myself) don't have *any* experience with prior HTML or CSS versionings, so everything in HTML is their first experience. I feel that's not really a great question because previous versions of HTML and CSS are old enough to be deprecated, and there's no point in worrying about what's new from those, when most early developers now never used them. It's like what is your favorite update of modern languages over COBOL? Well, primarily that I don't ever have to use COBOL.
@Telmosampaio
@Telmosampaio 6 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Nix you could think in another way. The interviewer with this question, can tell the difference between someone who got into web development to earn some money, and someone who is genuinely passionate about web development, and cares to go the extra mile and know this kind of information. Will this be a question that will eliminate you from the interview, probably not, but it could make the difference between hiring you or another guy with the some skills as you, but who knows this kind of things. PS: Im simply sharing this question because I had it in like 3 interviews, and its always good for you guys to be aware, hate it or not you better be prepared if you are looking for a job in front end development :)

Telmo Sampaio interesting, well thanks for the context. I'm still not sure how learning deprecated tech equates to understanding current tech, but maybe I should go read up on CSS 1.0 lol
@Telmosampaio
@Telmosampaio 6 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Nix you don't really get the point... you don't need to learn anything deprecated, but instead being aware of the new elements that were introduced with HML5... its the same thing like you are aware of all new features of the iphone 10. Like I said if the topic is not interesting for you, maybe it will be useful for someone else

I suppose that's true, it seems odd to me but my personal opinions on it don't really matter until I'm the one giving the interviews. Thank you for the perspective, I'll integrate it how I can.

@@iRant4u At some point, every developer is going to have to look at old code. Whether they are maintaining it or figuring out what it does so they can refactor it. If you don't know what you are doing when you look at old code, and you only know the newest standards, how useful can you be in the job world?

Hi ZickPranks, it's always good to know because you will have a more in depth knowledge of web development, imagine if you were in this interview, and you couldn't answer this question, could be a red flag for you. If you are getting into web development because you like it, you will learn small things like this one because you are really interested on the topic, and will make a better and more knowledge developer :)

CSS3 isn't a completely different language, it's just a new specification that includes 'some' new features. So learning CSS3 first will do you no harm whatsoever because the fundamental structure of CSS is still there - such as specificity and the box model, to name a few.

normalizing and resetting based on your description sounds the exact same. I've never looked too much into this as its something that is done for you if you're developing themes in Wordpress and use underscores for example. I would see a normalizing script or css file, i cant remember because again its done for you so I just go about whats more important. Ive always though normalizing was just the new standard for resetting. and now i've heard the term css reboot in bootstrap 4.
@Telmosampaio
@Telmosampaio 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Keepitfresh02, let me try to explain it better. Css resetting removes ( like zero ) all the padding and margins from the elements, so you need to specify your own values otherwise they will all be zero. Css Normalising makes sure all the elements on the page render the same across all browsers, because if you take a closer look you can see that different browsers render elements in different ways. Lets say for example a element might have a margin bottom 10px on Chrome, but 20px on Internet Explorer. So the css normalising gives all this elements in the page same values for padding and margins in all different browsers. I hope it makes sense :)

QUESTION - i AM AN OLD-SCHOOL WEB DESIGNER. Haven't built a web site in years. I learned to code in HTML, XML, and PHP - I use DreamWeaver 4.0 QUESTION - what is the coding language used most today for web design, and is DreamWeaver still a good web site building tool?
@Telmosampaio
@Telmosampaio 6 жыл бұрын
Hi A. W. you can still build modern and good looking websites with Dream Weaver, there are many other coding editors, but it comes to personal preferences to which one you should use. Me personally I use sublime, I think it's lighter and more user friendly than dream weaver, but of course it's only my opinion. Regarding the coding languages, with Html5 and Css3 you can build nice static Websites, and with Javascript you can make dinamic and interactive websites. this 3 languages are the foundations for any good website :)
@WebbChannel1
@WebbChannel1 6 жыл бұрын
Telmo, thank you for your prompt and informative reply. anything easier is better so I will definitely look into SUBLIME. As for Javascript - I hear there are serious security issues and designers are going to Python now ??
@Telmosampaio
@Telmosampaio 6 жыл бұрын
A. W. if you are talking about working as a Designer, you shouldn't be worried about security, since you are working only on the front end of the web site, you don't deal with sensitive data, like user details, passwords and databases. So javascript is perfectly fine for you to use :)

Maryam Malik this paper was made by me with questions that I got from previous Interviews I had in the past, I wrote them down so I could follow the sequence, and now Im sharing them in this video. Why the sarcasm "you can also share that paper or web.. lol"
