The Tempe Entertainment District is not happening. The city voted down all three of the proposals and now there is a real chance that the team moves.

As a former 3rd row season ticket holder the team management did not care about the fan base. I was told a few years ago that they didn't care about me and my tickets because they wanted to move. They have spent years taking on dead contracts to hit the cap floor. Just leave already and give us a minor league team which would be more interesting that this one.

AZ resident here. This was almost doomed from the start: too many Tempe residents watched what Glendale residents went through because Glendale's city council bought the stinking garbage the NHL sold them. Glendale taxpayers will be paying for the Coyotes mess for the next 30 years because of the bonds they floated throughout the years to prop up the Yotes. I am surprised the No vote wasn't bigger. Also surprised only a third of voters voted. How hard is it to check 3 boxes, seal your ballot in the envelope, sign the envelope, and drop it in the mail? You don't even need a stamp.

Honestly, that makes sense. With such an example nearby, possible for many to just say "no, we're not getting into this." And part of me thinks the turnout was pretty decent. People love having the right to vote and that democratic freedom. But a lot don't actually care about going out of their way to actually do the voting part.

As one Glendale resident asked his city council at one of the meetings about the Coyotes' financial troubles about a decade ago: "What's it gonna take you people to realize this has been a losing proposition from day one?". Good points. Tempe's economy is booming, so we don't need the Coyotes. I live near the proposed arena and the location is really bad. Thousands of cars would have cut through the neighborhoods for easier access every time it was used. Also, the jerk factor of billionaires did not help. Are any likable? Go three miles east and there are thousands of acres of open land on the reservation. Put it there. The Suns don't own the downtown arena, the city does. Tell the Suns they will have company.

As a Panthers fan you need good owners. The NHL needs to make sure teams have proper ownership. The Panthers had an ownership group in the very hard times that included a used car dealership chain owner and my friends wife actually worked for someone in the ownership group. We used to get in an ownership box for games. This guy ran like a small office with 10 employees and he was in the ownership group for the Panthers. Honestly look at things since they got their billionaire owner.

Not to be mean to the fans but Winnepeg should have never moved there in the first place. I remember as a kid thinking how dumb of a move that was. Not enough people like hockey there. I bet if you drove down the streets in the suburbs of Phoenix, you won't find a single street with kids playing street hockey because they don't like hockey like that.. That's why they live in a desert because hockey is never on your mind if you move to a desert. Pond hockey? Nope, not in the desert. Arizona doesn't deserve a team, not even a little bit. There seemed to be a mix of perspectives on the No side. * Local small businesses worried that if it got built, it would just mean people spend less money at their businesses. They felt that bringing the team to Tempe wouldn't increase any spending in the area, it would just shift who got the money people were spending, and if the Coyotes and the businesses in the proposed area were to get a big tax break, it'd mean less spending in local small business and subsequently less tax revenue generated for a city already struggling with its budgets. I'm not sure I buy the conclusions they came to, given that there's not a lot of other entertainment to be found within Tempe itself, so IMO they'd likely see entertainment money stay in/come to Tempe instead of being spent in Phoenix. But I can see the merit in opposing something that could reduce tax revenue and small business survivability at a time when the city is struggling financially and small businesses are as well. They'd likely prefer the landfill stay a landfill. * NIMBYs who just didn't want an "eyesore" or any risk of increased traffic, or who thought the city would have to pay an arm and a leg for it. This is the same city where a retirement home got built across from a long-standing club/venue, and proceeded to sue the venue into oblivion and force them to shut down over irrational and unfounded noise complaints (they knew they were moving in across from a loud place of business, they shouldn't have any grounds to sue because they built and gained residence with the understanding and expectation of those existing noise levels). Something like 60+% of Tempe residents over 55 showed up to vote, that's not going to bode well when ~33% of Tempe residents voted altogether. They'd likely prefer the landfill stay a landfill. * People who thought some wealthy benefactor or future mayor/council would decide to clean up the landfill and make it into affordable housing and parks. There's no indication that this is feasible, but it did seem to be something people were saying they would prefer (realistic or not), and building an arena and entertainment district would kill that potential. I mean, maybe they know something we don't and someone is willing and capable of doing that, and if so, I'd understand that. * Local unionworkers were concerned they wouldn't get the work, and that Meruelo would just bring in his own people from elsewhere, meaning the construction jobs this proposal pushed wouldn't be jobs for locals. Meruelo wouldn't promise to use local union labour, so it's very likely the work wouldn't stay local and help the local economy. Justifiable enough reason to vote against it. * Some folks in Phoenix, like the airport, seemed to complain for the sake of complaining, perhaps due to lobbyists.

As a long time Coyotes season ticket holder, I honestly can say that I am not surprised by the results of this initiative. There is run-away development all over this area and I'm sure that many long term residents do not want to deal with more traffic and congestion. The problem is that Vivint Arena doesn't have NHL capabilities in terms of seating (look at the pictures from the pre season games there). Houston is the first choice. If the NHL can get Tillman Fertitta (Rockets owner who has the operational control of Toyota Center) to agree to having an NHL team there the move will be announced asap, potentially during the Stanley Cup Final or before the draft. Kansas City is 100% the second option because that building was built with the NHL in mind (trying to lure the Penguins out of Pittsburgh and the Islanders out of New York). Since there is no primary tenant of T-Mobile Center the NHL walks in and holds the chips in that arena. I don't see this search getting past Houston and it definitely won't get past KC, but the only other offers I could see the NHL looking at are Salt Lake City and Milwaukee

Arizona sports fans are so different, even down to the high school level. I'm a former sports writer for the Eastern Arizona Courier. As soon as "your team" starts performing poorly, the fans get nasty and disappear. It's so bizarre to me. Real fans show support for better or worse. Suns fans disappear when the team stumbles and they've never won a championship. D-Backs fans come and go to a team that has one World Series championship under its belt. The Cards... I don't wan to touch them with a ten-foot pole until there's new management from the top down. On top of that, they've never won a Superbowl. And the Yotes? No Stanley Cup for them. This state's natives flock to winners and only winners. How can anyone expect a professional team to excel when fans don't rally behind them at the worst of times? It's heartbreaking. It feels like a pat on the head even if the intentions are good. tldr: I care most about the Coyotes fans that grew up with that team and have them as their #1 team. Let them have their moment.

Lengthy post here. 1. I'm not local to AZ but I've been a full Yotes season ticket holder since 2015. I've renewed for next season. 2. Seravelli has been out to get the Yotes. I don't trust his journalism at all anymore after this. 3. Meruelo has been the best ownership group since the club moved to AZ. However, Meruelo is not visibly involved in the community and he's made significant public missteps while in Glendale. I think that factored into play. 4. The citizens of Tempe made this vote- nobody else. This was not a referendum on whether or not people wanted hockey in AZ. This was a referendum as to whether or not Tempe wanted to remain a middle class bedroom community with that state university there. I think though many no votes were cast due to the fearmongering. 5. If Tempe1st had $2mil of funding and the TempeWins had $250k of funding, Meruelo made a HUGE mistake in not allocating resources. His group should've been spent $5-$10mil on TV and radio ads. 6. I think the Salt River Tribal Reservation is still alive. The location would be two miles away from the Tempe one! Tempe would have no say in this at all. The snagging point is that Meruelo would not be able to do gaming there as Salt River has two casinos operating. 7. Agreed that QBC is not getting the team. I grew up in Houston (and was introduced to hockey there in the WHA days). Houston will easily support a franchise. They averaged 7100 one year. They ended up moving b/c the then Rocket/Toyota owner wanted NBA type rent. That's why the Aeros moved. New Rocket/Toyota owner wants an NHL tenant and would likely give an "off capacity" break to an incoming club. Houston SMSA is 40% larger than PHX SMSA. 8. There are hardcore fans in PHX, but not enough of them. Tougher market to crack than Houston IMHO.

the worst thing that could happen now is that they move the team because of this vote and when the move is done because of what the coyotes have been doing with rebuilding and getting more picks, they actually have an good, competetive team that could challenge for the playoffs, im thinking like an repeat of the avalance. They moved from Quebec to Colorado and bam first year they win the cup, because the team wasn't bad it was other things that force the team to be moved and im sure that crushed some fans to see the team they had get moved and it instantly get sucess. I did a West Coast swing with the Hurricanes through Phoenix (and then LA and Anaheim) 22 years ago when they were still in America West (which was not built for hockey at all with a mezzanine that extended over the goalie's head on one end!). Far and away the friendliest and most welcoming lot amongst the fans were in Phoenix and the team really put on a heck of a show in the arena. They had the funky coyote logo in one corner of the building that had lights that were synced with a driving native drum beat during key points in the game and there was an intimacy in that place where you really felt on top of and part of the action. And then there were the howls when the Coyotes put one past Arturs Irbe (who would be one really pissed off little Latvian at the next stop at Staples Centre when his franchise-record consecutive starts would come to an end)...chilling but also a unique way of cheering a goal. It's truly a darned shame that a bunch of numpty NIMBYs with a strategic view that doesn't go past their nose might well have finally forced the Coyotes to move. Much as I loved the one year my father was stationed at Ft Leavenworth just NW of Kansas City which is a truly delightful city, the long-suffering Coyotes fans deserve far better than this. :(

Thus they built an arena based on the "NBA only" model, then had to awkwardly shoehorn the Yotes in after the fact once the Jets were available and Bettman was in the seat. I don't care about the Coyotes one way or the other (aside from loving the Sega NHL teams that featured Khabibulin, Roenick and Tkachuk the elder) and don't live in Phoenix, but our beloved Hockey Guy has some things wrong. The Yes side had *much* more money and organization behind it. According to the Arizona Republic, Tempe Wins spent about $700,000, almost all of it coming from Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo's development company. Tempe 1st, the main opposition group, spent about $35,000. The vote also had record turnout, so it seems clear that most people in Tempe simply didn't want to hand over 46 acres of prime land to a developer at a below-market rate and commit to more than $200 million in city-issued bonds. Based on Meruelo's track record, seems like a reasonable choice.

To add further. I’m from a non-traditional market (Kentucky). Growing up we had an AHL team, the Thoroughblades, who were affiliated with the SJ Sharks. They had to share an arena that was way too large for them (a 23,000 person arena). We averaged around 5,000 fans per game which was/is solid for the AHL. Playoff or rivalry games would be between 10,000-13,000. We ended up losing the team because our city planning and zoning commission wouldn’t allow them to build an arena/entertainment complex in a certain area because they didn’t want to clutter the area….fast forward 20+ years that same area has Costco, Cabelas, Apartments, a new Hospital being built, a new school, and new single family homes being built in mass. It’s a thing that many of us who were fans still feel upset over. Tl;dr I understand what Coyotes fans must be feeling. I used to hate the Yotes but honestly have grown to respect and root for them.
