Quick question: what should night temps be allowed to drop down to for a BTS? Also, temperature is technically the kinetic energy of air molecules and heat is the transfer of energy from one body to another (although some physics units will use energy as a unit, it’s better thought of as the transfer of energy rather than a distinct quantity).
@ReptileMountainTV

Drops to 70F work great. Lower than that isn’t recommended for non brumating animals.

ReptileMountain.TV thanks! My northern BTS is currently set up the way you describe in your care videos. Although I wasn’t sure about what to do at night so currently the hot side lights go off and then the other side has an under heat mat that heats at 80 degrees, but it keeps the soil around 75.

Hey, I’m just curious which mercury vapour bulb you would recommend? I have a screen top and the enclosure is 24” tall the lamp can sit on top or on the lamp clip I have inside the enclosure which keeps the lamp about 10” from the basking area! I bought a 100w ceramic heat emitter and it isn’t keeping the basking area as warm as I’d like it to be! (I have a northern!)
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 5 жыл бұрын
If you have a cage protecting the bulb it would be worth a try to put it in the tank and see what the temps grow to... 24” away might not get it warm enough...

I have a question how often every week would you feed a 6 month old merauke? The guy i got him from said every other day
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on weight really. I feed a portion of food the size of their head. If he’s on every other day and finishing all the food each time then stay at that unless he begins to look fat. Then cut back. My 4 months olds aren’t eating every other day at this point because they slowed down on growth and were getting fat. So they are now 2x a week.

Hi reptile mountain tv! I got any blue tongued skink yesterday and she is soooooooo small! We got her at a pet store, and she did not look like her habitat was good for her. She did not have a place to hide, she didn’t really have any bedding, and I didn’t even see a water dish! The pet store guy recommended a heat lamp that I don’t think is hot enough for her. On the hot side it is about 87 degrees. I am wondering what heat lamp I should get for her. ( oh btw she’s an Indonesian )

Hi TC. We went with the 4X2X2 from Reptile Kages for our Northern. Like the cage but not sure about the ventilation and heat retention. We live in Arizona and the house is set at 78. We have slate tile under the light and get 101 with the probe. Move off of that and it's 88 and the cool side is 84. Not really seeing much temp gradient. Any suggestions?
@ReptileMountainTV
@ReptileMountainTV 4 жыл бұрын
If you can raise the basking site closer to the heat element you can reduce the intensity of the heat element which can help. Also depending on your tool availability and skill you might consider drilling some extra vent holes (be sure to check with Zach at Kages to get advice on best way to do so before just attacking the cage). Venting on the cool end will help. 78 is pretty high as a baseline. My room is 75 and I can get close to 78.

What is you opinion on ceramic heat emitters for a night time heat source? Im not the biggest fan of heat mats because of the reliability but the heat lamp obviously disrupts the day night cycle im trying to provide. Reduce the power or intensity of the heat source if an overhead bulb. Then raise the basking platform closer to the source.

Hi! I’m a new bluey keeper. More specifically, Halmahera. I was wondering how to keep my enclosure temperature up. My room is around 60 and I live in Northern Pennsylvania. I can’t seem to get the temp above 80. My humidity is at 90%. Do you use both a heat lamp and a ceramic heater? I apologize if this was asked and answered already. I checked out the care sheets at bluetongueskinks.org but still have some confusion as to proper heat lighting for the Classic Indonesian vs the other Indo sp. I'm adopting an apparently Classic Indo, 1 1/2 year old female, said to be cbb. Her owner told me to get her a 150 watt lamp for basking... I got a Zoomed 150W "Intense Basking Spot" bulb but wouldn't this be too hot? I saw other sources mention 80W and some 100W. Could I still use the 150W bulb if the fixture has a dimmer switch? I want to make sure I don't burn this girl when I get her home! :/ I have White's tree frogs, Amazon Milk frogs, and South American Bird Poo frogs in the same room, and the ambient temps in the room itself are 77F on average during the day and 72F to 75F at night. This time of year the humidity in the room can really bottom out, so I spray the frogs extra and turn on a humidifier, which generally puts the room into the 40's% range. I have purchased a 40 gal glass breeder tank (have a 4'x24"x15"T AP cage on order) and have a mixture of Eco-Earth, coco husk, cypress mulch, and a topping of Reptichip fir bark for substrate. Also have a large dishpan upended, that has a hole cut out of one end, that I'll put damp long fiber sphagnum moss into for a moist hide. I just checked the temp inside the tank, sans substrate or basking lamp, just a 48" LED 65ooK strip light (made for planted aquariums) on top for extra lighting, and on top of the big dishpan that will be her moist hide it reads 80F and the other end of the tank on the cork bark it reads 78F.

It sounds like your room at night should be fine. You will need a halogen flood light bulb that is dimmable. If you get a higher watt like 100 or 150 you can dim it to the correct intensity. Wattages vary because household temps, barometric pressures, room lay out and air flow are all unknown variables we can tell over the internet.
@irThumper
@irThumper 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I looked at our local Wallymart and saw nothing but LED floodlights (lots of items weren't in stock) so guess I better look somewhere else for halogens! :O The room isn't huge, only 10-something by 10-something feet. I keep a stand fan on most days, even in the winter, to help circulate the air around for the frogs and isopods.

@ReptileMountainTV

They are pretty no doubt. Their price is based supply and demand. They are mostly wild caught, smaller, and are insectivores mostly. Which puts them in less demand than the large blue tongues that don’t require any insects. Plus fire skinks are not really that handleable compared to some of the blue tongues.
