ANDREW WARD WEIRD WORLD
Tempsford airfield bear Sandy, Bedfordshire, was a Second World War airfield but not that well known as it was a secret one. Lot of the buildings were to be made out to be farm barns so couldn’t be spotted from the air. Most flights took secret agents and supplies behind the enemy lines. Come with me on my quick visit to this secretive airfield.

161 and 138 Sqdn SD flew from here.Ive been in the barn where equipment was issued to agents before they're dangerous missions

Why is it closed to the public? A pity that the runways are in such poor condition. It is past of history, heritage they should repair and let people visit. A great video Andrew.

Hi Lieuwina, it does seem strange I must admit that this place is hard to visit. So I gather if you want to visit the airfield you have to get to the farmer who owned the land. There is a footpath to it which I walked along. It’s quite easy to find and the barn is open as there is no doors.

Agree I think we should make more of it..What is strange it still belongs to UK government ministry defence unlike many other airfields sold for other purposes may be it's kept for defence purposes if needed

Have you have any idea which squadron and year he served at Tempsford?

Yes he was with the 161 Squadron and served towards the end of the 2nd W war. A Pilot/instructor S/L on the Stirling a/c. "assyrian Levies info" online is a good source of info if you haven't already seen it. Have you been to the barn?

I live in the little village Everton just up the road and I have the best memories from me and a my mates used to go there all the time. Such a nice place.

Yes its very interesting a lot of history there. When me and my mates used to go down there we used to go down tempsfod hill to the second field and turn right near the middle of the field, cut through some trees and there are about 2 or 3 old bunkers, 2 of which are still standing with both the ladders still in tacked. Then once we were done in there we walked further up to tempsford airfield and it was the best time every summer

Also, my dad told that, where there are gas tanks underneath the airfield which provides the gas for sandy and the surrounding area apparently there was a secret underground tunnel that went for the airfield to sandy to smuggle the gas into the airfield without anyone knowing. We are not sure if it true or not but it would be good to find out and possibly explore. :)

My late beloved uncle, Ron Willis Scales (known as Ron), of Pickering, North Yorkshire died peacefully 30th April 2013 aged 91. He flew many missions as a rear gunner from Tempsford before his severely damaged Handley Page Halifax bomber ditched in the North Sea on its return from Germany. Only two of the crew survived the ditching to then spend two days adrift on the water before washing-up on occupied Holland. Crossing a mined beach successfully, Ron's colleague was none-the-less badly injured and would die a short time after they were picked-up by the occupying forces. Ron spent three and a half years interned in POW camps, but survived to return home after the war ended. He went on to marry my mother's eldest sister, Margaret Emery, and had a daughter, Jill. Margaret died 23rd January 2016 aged 90 years. Ron and Margaret named their home in Pickering "Tempsford". Tragically, they would lose Jill in a car accident in Liberia on Valentines Day 1977; her fiance Jeff Yutan survived. Jill and Jeff were employed by British Caledonian at the time of the accident, and Jill featured in several adverts for them (in days before model agency staff were used). Ron rarely spoke of his wartime experiences; though in later times he was persuaded to commit some of his memories to print. Ron, Margaret and Jill are remembered by their family with much love to this day. Jerry Can hiya. I read your comments about Ron as he was based there. Very interesting, especially as he flew from that airbase as a rear gunner and being shot down and had to ditch in the North Sea. Thanks for watching and giving me a bit more information. Cheers and thanks for watching :-)
