@@Dareicareeee Yes, he was so misunderstood sometimes. He also had a Heart Of Gold, he had wanted to help his then Girlfrend's Group The Honeys (Slang For Female Surfers) become a Girlband. It was the early 1960's when The "Original"Girl Group Phenomenon was at it's peak. It didn't happen but his Daughters Wendy & Carnie became 2/3 of Wilson Phillips. Brian idolized Phil Spector and so did Michael Tretow who produced Abba's Music as well as Xenomania The popular UK Producing Team who gave Girls Aloud 21 Top Ten Hits who are the most successful Reality Show Group of all time. Also listen to Fun Fun Fun and Johnny B. Goode, and it was also alike.

@@Dareicareeee sorry to break the magic about the BB . Copying the Beatles I wouldn’t call magical but rather a coward way. After the Fab Four released “ SGT Pepper “ Brian had a mental break down. Why? Because that record was passing them with the speed of the light. And came the British Invasion and BB disappeared from the lists. But the point is I want to tell, yes, they were popular but only in the USA. Although they could have better in about everything as equipments or producers. But that proudness and ignorance which is known about Americans by now all over the world fading that picture was painted about them. And anyone can ask a Chinese or a Pakistani youngsters about the BB or about the Beatles, they know only the Beatles. And that is a fact!

My dad tried to play it to me while I was in the womb. He would put the headphones directly on my momma's belly. I can't confirm that I actually heard anything, but I can confirm that it's my favorite song.

Also a little Beatles/Beach Boys tidbit. Bruce Johnston helped Paul McCartney with the "Beach Boys" harmonies on Back in the USSR and Paul McCartney did a track on the Beach Boys song Vegetables.... eating a piece of celery.

My friend Alex, I agree with the POP, but rock? Com on man. Today even garage bands play better rock than they did. It’s pure pop, and I’m going even further it Candy pop. Have you ever attended in their life concert ? The band with the most off pitch singing songs. And they influenced nobody with their shitty music. They just tried to keep up with the Beatles but failed miserably. And they were not underrated at all , in fact they were celebrated everywhere in the USA, which is famous about bragging with their own. Popular POP is the category I would put them, but not Rock!

I always wondered what month in 1966 they shot the "Pet Sounds" cover. I heard it was May? If so, that looked like an awfully cold day for May in SoCal because they were all wearing coats, jackets and long sleeve shirts!

Brian Wilson actually wrote the song. Around 1964-66, he wrote a lot of songs for different groups (whether they be made for them or Beach Boys throwaways).

Definitely a cool analysis on the band, they're one of the great rock and roll groups and it was also interesting to hear some backstory about the Pet Sounds cover, the boys definitely had it rough. Also props for referring to him as "The Idiot", as that's one word I would use to describe him and the horrible and (quite simply) evil things he had done

Exactly my thought. Yet, instead of people reacting to the blatant censorship that shouldn't even be necessary, they actually find it endearing! He isn't bloody Voldemort. There isn't a curse on his name. I've heard Hitler's name mentioned plenty in videos before. It's one messed up automated system if videos get blocked (or even demonetised) just for mentioning a name.

Two crazy positive things. One of the guitarists on Pet Sounds and one of the great guitarists, Glen Campbell subbed for Brian Wilson, as bassist, on the tour. There is only one NBA player who made the All Star game, won a championship, and whose uncle has sold over 100million records: Kevin LOVE.

I have always believed that "The Idiot" not being credited for that song was what precipitated the murders that he directed. I think his intended target was Terry Melcher, whose house had been recently sold to Roman Polanski, which may have been unknown to "The Idiot". Most likely, "The Idiot" still believed that Melcher still lived there, and thus ordered his "disciples" to murder everyone at the residence.

Awesome video, however I just wish you could’ve made a fact about or mentioned that the albums SMiLE was supposed to be released as an answer to Sgt. Pepper but was ultimately shelved due to inner tensions and mike love being an idiot and not wanting to experiment with music. Other than that great video im a die hard beach boys fan so I was happy to see you did one about them.

SMiLE wasn't supposed to be a response to sgt. Peppers afaik, as it was supposed to come out in the same year, so they had been working on it before sgt. Peppers was released. It would be more of a response to revolver. Also, you probably already know this, but SMiLE wasn't actually shelved forever. Brian wilson actually ended up finishing the album in 2004 and it is a really amazing album.

@@Chadturner21 Have you seen the Brian wilson SMiLE documentary/concert film? If not I would highly recommend that you watch it. It is really moving to see Brian wilson facing his demons face on with a SMiLE on his face like he did at that concert, especially with all of the context that the documentary part adds to it. He was absolutely terrified of SMiLE because of everything that happened around the time of recording and the fact that he thought that during the fire tapes that they had manifested fires to happen around that area just through the music. But in that film you get to finally see him finnish his artistic vision and finally face the fear of it, and you just see him up there on stage finally performing SMiLE and he actually looks like he is having an amazing time, which is pretty unusual for him. And everyone is there for him, cheering him on, including paul mccartney, van dyke parks and a bunch of other people who he is close to or looks up to. It is honestly the most emotional and moving concert footage I've seen, largely because of the context that surrounds it.

Unbelievably, I don't remember "Pet Sounds" being released. In fact I never heard the album. Back then, all that the press talked about was English music. So sorry to find the truth - decades later. Man, oh man, I do hate MSM.

Pet Sounds is amazing. Most certainly. But Revolver, Abbey Road and the White Album fight it out for top 3 spots on any of my lists. Rubber Soul and Sgt Peppers are not far off either

I cannot believe that there was an objection to “God only knows”. It’s not blasphemous. It’s an expression indicating that the speaker has no idea how something happened and neither does anyone else except God since God knows everything. I guess they could’ve written it as “nobody knows” but that would’ve taken some of the beauty away from it. I love the song. It’s a beautiful love song. “This idiot” and “the idiotic cult” haha. That’s a pretty good description although maybe it should’ve been “this sociopath” because that’s really what “the idiot” was. I know way too much about “the idiot” and the “idiotic cult”. Good for you for not stating the names of “the idiot” and “the idiotic cult” They get way too much publicity as it is and they shouldn’t get any attention except for their families and the others who are in the same prison. I think Dennis made the right decision about not reporting stuff. If he had, his life would’ve been in serious danger. Also Dennis did steal the song and change the title and changed some of the lyrics and took 100% of the writing credit. He did that for good reason because “the idiot” and the “idiotic cult” lived in Dennis’ house for months. Dennis paid for food, clothing, medical attention and bought cars for some of them, etc. They stole valuable things from Dennis’ house and they trashed the house. I believe that Dennis had the right to steal the song in order to try to offset at least some of the money that he spent on them.

Lots of songs about surfing, but the Beach Boys were not a "Surf Band" per se. This music lacks the "Machine Gun" 16 th notes which define the genre. See Dick Dale.
