When he says "see you in heaven", he actually says 'Nangijala' instead of heaven. Nangijala is an Edenic afterlife in Swedish author Astrid Lindgren's book "The brothers lionheart" in which the two titular brothers jump from the second or third-story window of their burning home to escape the flames. The elder dies of the fall and travels to Nangijala, while the other survives but joins him not so long after since he dies of a fever. I just thought it was beautifully put by Linus, and since they understandably did not include this in their translation I thought I'd write it here.

I realise now that other people have written the same thing, but I'll let my comment sit, since I think its important to leave in the part about them jumping from their windows.

For context (for those without a Scandinavian or German/Austrian childhood): The younger brother was very ill and bed-ridden, he was afraid of death so his older brother told him those stories about Nangijala to calm him. This is also why he carried him on his back during the fire and they jumped together.

The conversation between Frida and Linus was so entertaining, sounded like a script. Actually watching all these people was so fascinating, i mean like seeing human's reaction in front of situations where your primordial instinct shows up, it's magical and profound, so good! Loved it! And I also loved the fact that for the majority of the time we do not see the height of the jump, because the height itself it's not important, it's even more educative seeing the pure physical reaction. Seeing the height would have make it less captivating, It's the "not knowing" and the obscurity of things that makes things hypnotizing, cause your imagination it's free to contextualize them.

it's not just the tower, but you can see straight down to the bottom of the pool too. So it looks very far down. If you're terrified of heights there's no chance you're jumping off that thing. I've jumped twice and the impact with the water was very painful, idk how high divers manage it lol.

Can we acknowledge what a great person Frida is? Linus is way more scared than she is, but instead of showing him up she says the perfect things to encourage him without making him feel like he'd be weak if he backed out. The way she played it, Linus came away thinking like he was the brave one, and Frida just followed him because he showed her it would be OK. But that's not at all what actually happened if you pay close attention. What happened was that Frida basically orchestrated the situation so that Linus would come away with the maximally positive feelings, which included playing up her own fear. Once Linus was off the platform and she made sure she wouldn't land on him she just went, and she even copied Linus's scream. This way he would feel not like the one strange kid who screamed but as the leader who was followed. This is basically pure empathy caught on video, and it's really just charming.

Crossing that "Fear Threshold" for the first time is a life-changing experience, whether it's a 10-meter jump into a pool, the first skydive, holding a spider when you're deathly afraid of spiders, fighting a martial arts tournament the first time when you've always been bone-deep afraid of physical conflict, or confronting WHATEVER makes you curl into a ball. The first is always the hardest. All my life, I was terrified of speaking in public. I would do absolutely anything to get out of it. Now, after crossing - and re-crossing - that significant threshold, I now speak to groups as a normal part of my job. I'm still scared, but no longer debilitatingly terrified. I watch this video and have the utmost respect for everyone who got on the platform, whether they jumped or not. Sometimes, just looking into the abyss serves as a significant step toward eventually crossing that fear threshold.

@Washeek
@Washeek 3 жыл бұрын
@@wjrneo2 But that's being stupid. It is a good plan, don't get me wrong, it should get you over the edge, but it is behaving stupid. Up there your whole body is shouting at you to stop, because you will probably hurt yourself. And you know what? The estimation is correct. It's not something that won't go away after a little bit, but it does hurt if you are even a little imprecise. Fear is often a very valid information of your subconscious. Seems to me the proper way is to stop at the edge, wait for the initial panic to go away, rationalize and then go.
@wjrneo2
@wjrneo2 3 жыл бұрын
@@Washeek Incorrect. Thats for a situation where the end result is unknown. This is a clear situation with a known safe outcome. The easiest way to get through it is to just do it. You don't have to do any fancy crap. Literally just step off the platform, and plunge straight down like a stick. Standing up on the platform will only prolong the panic attack. Your adrenaline is pumping like crazy and will continue to do so until the event has passed. Literally just do it, and it'll be over. Its the case where 'face your fears' applies 100%.

I was lucky to go to a high school with an Olympic diving platform. We used to sneak into the pool area at night on the weekends, roll under the laser beam alarm system, scale the exterior of the stairwell up to the 10m platform and jump off into the blackness below. It was absolutely thrilling. Jumping off a 10m platform in daylight is scary enough but the pitch black offered a whole new level of excitement! This is a fantastic video of raw human emotion. Trust me - the first time you look down from the 10m platform is terrifying. Our brains cannot comprehend falling for that distance, so overcoming that is an act of sheer will power.

I jumped in the river from a 5 meter high bridge once. I was preparing myself for like 20 minutes. It is scary the first time. There were a lot of people. Mostly teenagers. Half of them chickened out. I remember talking to one guy. He had been coming to the bridge for several days with his friends. And he couldn't overcome his fear. I told him just do it, there is almost no danger to you. And if you don't do it, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. I don't know whether he jumped or not.

My daughter jumped off a 10m when she was 5. The pools where we usualy went only had a 5m and she had been doing that since 3 but 10m is a different league and can go nasty wrong if you're not fit and do something real wrong so I got her into the local diving club where she thrived. The back flip that girl at the end did is one of her favourite jokes she liked to pull on the big teenage boys twice her age. 4,5,6 teenagers on the tower and she climbs up and they all look at her like, she aint jumping. She'd walk to the edge, turn around and look at the guys and do that slow back flip. The looks on the faces of the boys was always so funny to watch, loads would climb back down the ladder rather embarrased.

Fun story, for those who care: Over 10 years ago, I jumped the 10 meters for the first time when I was 14 years old, to impress a girl. Seeing those people working up their courage to jump reminded me of how scared out of my mind I was and the relief I felt once I took the dive. About a week later, I went to the park with her and I was sitting on a bench in front of a pond next to a weeping willow tree, she was lying down with her head in my lap and I decided that I wanted her to be my first kiss. Working up the courage to do that was a million times harder than the 10 meter jump. I realized as I was kissing her that my legs were shaking like crazy under her head. We both laughed it off and she became my girlfriend for a time, a few minutes later. Life is full of decisions to which the answer is obvious, but the hard part is getting over your fear of making that decision, once you rid yourself of that, you are truly free, for the time that you fall.

Wow, that went quick. When it first started I thought eek, this is gonna be slow going at over 16 mins long but it went so quickly. Glad there was no music, added to the tension.

that was a really nice touch for sure. I like how it's just them and their minds and the pool below. shoutout to the lady calling out to the tattooed guy though; was interesting to see him with pressure after all the others were relatively free. I wonder if/how much she contributed to him giving up. would he have jumped if he were alone?🤔

Yeah that's awesome! Maybe not a Pulitzer but that was very nicely put together! Reminds me a lot of "Strip Tease"; it was a famous Belgian/French TV program where journalists were following/documenting the daily routine of unusual people such as car tuning maniacs, friendly hippy drug dealer, far right lost boy and so on. You'd usually rarely hear the journalist voice and the focus was put on the subject, without any commentary, aiming for absolute neutrality. That was amazing!

You can really feel with these people. I jumped from 10m once when I was younger and the honestly don't know how I did it or if I could ever do it again. But having all this tension and then the feeling of falling and the ultimate relief afterwards is just amazing.

Its very different once you're up there looking down. Your natural instinct is not to jump so overcoming that can take a lot of effort. The moment you do though, that fear fades away like vapour. It goes to show a lot of our fears seem much more substantial than they actually are and once we confront them we see the truth. It's an important step to take in our lives so we grow as a person and one that many unfortunately choose to never take.

@@kathryncarter6143 Yes, he is! And yes, so many of you are. It is beautiful to behold. I don't know whether she was afraid or not, but there is a part where she is saying "I trust in you, if you say 'Frida don't do it', I won't". It doesn't go quite like that in the subs. But she uses that trust for sure when she jumps, seeing that all went well.

You may think jumping is scary, but the most scary thing is allowing hesitation to ruin your jump. A slip or a bad jump can potentially make you land into the water incorrectly and injuring yourself. It's better to jump with confidence and know how you'll control your landing. We did this a few years ago off a 10 meter bridge. Jumping into the river is scary because you don't really know how deep it is, you just know it's deep enough. The river was moving pretty fast too so you'll have to worry about swimming to the bank and not get caught in current.
