A few months ago I had a discussion with a guy who believed "Ten Years Gone" is Zeppelin's best track, hands down. No close second. I've listened to it a hundred times since, just about convincing myself the dude is right.

I've had that same thought multiple times. Same with The Rain Song

I agree with your friend, it's my favorite Zeppelin track in a long list of favorite Zeppelin tracks. It's a well constructed song, light & heavy at the same time, driving rhythm and great lyrics/vocals, guitar parts that fit the song perfectly without overpowering them or getting lost. Thank you James James.
@1111MJR4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. It’s their best song, definitely.
@jamesjames92754 жыл бұрын
Well, musically, Since I've Been Loving You is stellar. No criticism there. But the squeaky drum pedal is so distracting, it's hard for me to fully appreciate the brilliance of the performance. So for me, it's not perfect in every conceivable way. Kashmir, on the other hand, is perfect. And Jimmy even resisted the temptation of adding a guitar solo, which would have ruined it. :)

I love playing this song. IMO this song is one of the greatest songs they've ever done. I rate it higher as a guitar symphony than "Achilles" e.g.. It is just brilliant hat Jimmy produced here. And I bet it was not an easy song for Robert to find space to write a real melody on top. To find space to develop a real part. The solo is amazing; all the chord voicings, and especially that bridge, with that one chord!

From Wikipedia: Plant later added lyrics, which are dedicated to an old girlfriend who, ten years earlier, had made him choose either her or his music. Plant explained this in an interview in 1975: “Let me tell you a little story behind the song "Ten Years Gone" on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, "Right. It's me or your fans." Not that I had fans, but I said, "I can't stop, I've got to keep going." She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you.” And the rest folks is history. Ramble on. ;)

James James is gifted enough to be a fill-in for Jimmy on many songs -- play as a second lead guitar. James probably will not admit this in deference to other great bands. He KNOWS: By sheer number of iconic riffs alone, let alone lead vocals, drummer and bass -- Led Zeppelin is the best hard rock band. All-time. 14 over-dubs here for just ONE masterful song! Physical Graffiti, just ONE of Led Zeppelin's many masterful albums. It's nearly incontrovertible. They RULE the hard rock genre.

Nice job on a version I’d not heard before. I slapped a Hipshot b-bender on my tele awhile back. Mine has the additional G-palm lever and the drop D lever for the low E string. Nondestructive installation (except for slotting a donor bridge). Unfortunately, way too many mechanical variables for my limited attention span to learn how to use it effectively.

yes indeed the B Bender first design by byrds player Clarence White.. now on by the great Marty Stuart that beautiful fender.. Brad Paisley had both B& G Bender believe he's got two. yeah I learned how valuable up b-bender really is when trying to figure out how to play a couple of Eagles songs were Bernie lead and bent the hell out of the strings and I realize he had a b Bender in order to get those Great bends. I 10 years God didn't Jimmy Page Les or almost twenty-three guitars on top of the original mixture some insane number like that when you break it down off of the board?? this was a cool page plant one you did a good job improvising that part without the string bender.

He started using it onstage in 77 for TYG. In the studio, he used it on In a Through the Out Door, you can hear it most clearly on All My Love and Hot Dog. I suspect he did the solo for Southbound Suarez on it, too. It was his main guitar in The Firm.

If I recall correctly he salvaged the neck from his then-defunct Dragon Telecaster and slapped it on a body with a B bender. Used it pretty in the late 70s-80s.
