Now he could've been wrong I just took his word for it as he knew what he was talking about when it came to music and I'm kinda tone deaf so I couldn't disprove him (I can make out changes in fast pace music but if you slow it down or play the notes individualy it sounds the same to me probably why I tend to listen to alot of older metal or vocal heavy bands)

So when the HBO shorts came out in ‘94 (I think there’s 6 episodes) I watched them so much that these songs are BURNED into my memory forever. Back then, they’d gotten a springboard from Mr. Show (another show on HBO) and if you saw those episodes you were kind of in on the ‘gag’. They were real musicians, real comedians and real actors creating a fictional and crazy account of their history: two slackers trying to make it big as a rock band all the whole believing that they are TRULY the best band in the world and everyone else just doesn’t realize it yet. Then JB started making movies but The D never broke up and the music from those shorts was good enough for them to make albums, to tour and to make the story into a movie. ‘The Pick of Destiny’ is a movie version of those first HBO shorts and it’s great but if you watch those 6 original 30-minute shorts, you’ll totally understand what they’re about. Ive seen them live twice and they’re better than most ‘real bands’. If you get the chance, I highly recommend catching a show. 👍🏻

I remember an old interview with Jack Black where he said that he's had some version of Tenacious D since he was pretty young and that they even played the wrap party for "Dead Man Walking" where he played Sean Penn's kid brother back in the day and that Sean Penn asked him after why they played comedy songs since they were so talented and could definitely play serious music, and Jack Black replied that at some point they had tried being serious and didn't feel like it worked for them so they went all out with what did feel right and that's why Tenacious D plays this kind of music despite being good enough to be a serious band.

There are also subtle references to "greatest songs in the world" in the song. Like, the guitar melody is vaguely similar to "Stairway to Heaven", the lyrics are similar to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". And the "Thriller" thing you pointed out at the end of the video was probably intentional, too.

fun fact.. the chord progression to the part you said sounded familiar is the same as the chord progression in Stairway to heaven. in fact, in early live recordings of this song, they would break into stairway to heaven at that part (indicating that stairway was the "greatest song" they played to defeat the demon). i imagine when they did the actual release of the song they re-worked it to a: avoid copyright and b: put their own spin on it

As it has been said hundreds of times in the comments it was Dave Grohl playing the devil. You can see his tattoos showing through the makeup. Also the face he pulls when licking the guitar neck you can tell its him. But if you don't know it's hard to spot on the first viewing. Did you catch the other cameo in the video? Ben Stiller is one of the shoppers walking passed when Jack grabs him he turns toward the camera before shrugging Jack off and walks out of shot. A pretty cool hidden cameo I'd say.

Tenacious D was actually part of a Dio music video for the song 'Push" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZ2eitqqqJmlen0.html From the wiki for Tenacious D -- ' The album also included "Dio", a song written as a tribute to rock singer Ronnie James Dio, which mocked him somewhat for being too old. Dio liked the song enough to ask the band to appear in the music video for his song, "Push" '

Pretty sure there's a subtle ode to Stairway to Heaven in this song (arguably the ACTUAL greatest song in the world) in that the chord sequence is the same.

Jamel. also known as Jamel! I’ve been waiting for you to get back jack black and the D! Jack black grew up a massive rock fan, but he just couldn’t help but to give his music a comedic twist. Which is good, cuz you can see his musical talents, but he can’t help by being himself and make it original in his music.

Tribute is a high budget version of their earlier work, the tenacious D television show, which is too hilarious and must be checked out. It's the perfect place to start with tenacious d, and then go through their 4 albums and the movie. It's not actually a huge amount of content, and can easily all be watched and listened to in a single day.

These guys had a show before the album. It usually had them engaging in some sort of misadventure and then ending up at a local open mic night. This particular song had the demon being played by their “neighbor” at the apartments, and he couldn’t stand the noise from their rehearsals...he was a writer...he couldn’t write. The tunes are great by themselves, but that show was on a level all its own.

Jack Black (and Tenacious D) got their start on an HBO late night sketch show in the 90s called Mr. Show with Bob & David (David Cross, Arrested Development & Bob Odenkirk, Breaking Bad). Check out the sketch “The Joke, the Musical” for a seriously absurd (and inappropriate) time.
