▶【Synopsis】Set during the Ming Dynasty, the story revolves around the romance between General Xu Lingyi and the concubine's daughter Shiyiniang that starts from an arranged marriage. Despite being born with a low status, Luo Shiyiniang is extremely assertive and believes that a woman's vision should not be limited to the household. She hopes to rely on her embroidery skills as a ticket to freedom. However, the once esteemed Luo family is in a state of decline. Hoping to save the clan through a marriage alliance, Shiyiniang is selected to become the wife of Yongping Duke and great general Xu Lingyi. Things were not easy for Shiyiniang due to the Xu family's biases towards her. Nonetheless, she manages to win over their trust through her optimism and sincerity. Xu Lingyi also becomes attracted to Shiyiniang's various beautiful qualities such that husband and wife manage to find love after marriage.

They are from noble family, so many teachings start at young 4 year old for them and then Shiyi had a hard life and had to grow up fast, so they can survive plus she did not grow up in the city and pampered but did everything on her own since the mother is restricted to try work on her own or even leave the house as a wife of noble family

Back then if you were 'old enough to bleed, you're old enough to breed'. Gods help those poor little girls who were unfortunate enough to start menses early. Margaret Beaufort (Henry VII mother) was bedded at 12, birthed at 13 and it destroyed her reproductive systems. Luckily she birthed a boy who survived or all her suffering would have been for nothing. This belief system was only let go of at the end of the 1800's, for the most part, it persisted into the early 1900's and then died out in the western world. It's still around if you look for it, mostly fundamentalists groups in the west, primitive groups everywhere else.

Since I absolutely adore this couple, I keep looking in these earlier episodes to see if Lingyi already has some sort of attraction to Shiyi (I don't look for her reaction since he fell in love first and quite quickly). They played it close to the chest though b/c I still can't get a good read on his opinion.

Well apparently this is considered emotionless for the chinese. Its why their acting looks fake and overdone to the rest of the world. They cant pick up on emotions as well as we can. Its due to their language. Like literally the rest of the world uses tones for emotional inflection and empasis. Chinese use tones for words, not emotions. So we can say yes in tons of tones. Hopeless yes. Sad yes. Angry yes. Surprised yes. We can empasize words with tones. Mandarin and canto cant do that. They use puns and poetry to mean out of tbis world wacky things. Empasis is done by repeating the word twice. So chinese drama does this to let you know how evil someone is. Its overkill but in reality...shes supposed to sound and act sweet.

I found Yunniang too scheming and relentless for my tastes - up until she begged her husband to promise to marry Shiyi. The actress is fantastic b/c I could really sense her desperation to protect her son, which considering later events was really an intelligent move on her part.

Plus, Lianfang won’t be the wife, but Shiyi is. From what little scenes of Yuanniang for the past four episodes, she’s a schemer like her mother in a soft, sort of way only to be taken out by Lianfang in order to be the Marquis’s wife.

谭松韵的演技是不错的，越往后越好，有前途。钟汉良的戏份不多，但是表现杰出。和他10年前比较，他的进步非常大，表现内心细节方面没几个人可以跟他比，我看的剧目不多，我看到的，他是最好的。这部古装剧是他的高峰，身材，颜值，演技，可称完美。很佩服他。

I couldn't like the eldest Luo sister no matter how I tried. She gives me so many mixed feelings. But at the end, everything she did, she did out of desperation. Her son is pretty much alone in a dangerous household that made her terminally ill, and he's so damn tiny still. Ugh I cried so hard when she was singing to him.

Everyone’s perception of beauty is different, to me, he is hot ! What makes a man attractive is not just how he looks, he needs to be beautiful inside and out, genuine, polished, alluring, graceful, courageous, captivating and talented. What a beautiful story! There are so many outstanding scenes and acting ability between the two main characters. They both play their roles in a realistic manner. He's older and harden by his life and sacrifices he's made and she is young, innocent, and wise beyond her years. I'm obsessed with watching it over and over.

Ying Er is one of my favorite Chinese actress. She is ever natural and flawless in every scenes that she's into. I also like her sweet and innocent looking face.... Wallace Chung is so fortunate to looked so young in spite of his present age, 46...I like him more in portraying ancient Chinese roles, such as in The General and I.

I’m so curious about what the little monk forgot to tell Shiyi! It must be a really important clue. I wonder if the person responsible for Shiyi’s mother’s death is also possibly responsible for Yuanniang’s death if she was somehow poisoned (only guessing based on Yuanniang’s last words to Shiyi).
