I felt like a lot of the genius in this book was the obvious parallels not only to factory farming but also to concentration camps and the Belgian Congo. The psychology of how a society can accept something horrific with simple language changes and peer pressure

To me it also points out that words matter. It matters how you label things and any verbiage used to dehumanize people definitely works.

I'm Argentinian and I decided to read this book after your review. I recommend you two Argentinian authors that I believe you would love: Samanta Schweblin and the queen of latin horror Mariana Enriquez. I love your channel.

I just finished the book and wow what a ride. This book made me feel almost every emotion possible - disgust, anger, fear, sadness…pretty much everything but happiness lol. The scenes involving the main character’s memories about his Dad had me in tears. I don’t know how I feel about the ending but I really enjoyed this book.

As an Argentinian, this book shocked me to my core. Our country has a very big and old tradition of eating meat. I mean, our national dish is asado, a kind of barbecue. And raising cattle is pretty common here, I think that we all know someone who works in that field... All these things made the book even more traumatizing because I could see traces of Argentinian behavior all over the place 😭 Great review!! If you want to read more horror books, I recommend you check out Marianan Enriquez!

THE AMOUNT OF TIMES I GAGGED JUST REMEMBERING THE BOOK WATCHING YOUR VIDEO. I literally came to KZfaq right after finishing the book because I can’t talk to anyone about this book without sounding sane. Also it reminded me a lot of the book called the jungle by Upton Sinclair, not the person eating people part (although that line is kinda thin) but the slaughter house and the terrible conditions immigrant workers where in. I recommend you read it, it has A LOT of talking points.

I would like to know more about the author. I’d be willing to bet she is a vegetarian. For the entire book, all I could think about was animals. Yeah, there was the cannibalism part, but if you look into factory farming, the way meat is processed is pretty much the same. And it IS horrific and we have been conditioned all our lives that these animals don’t matter, that they are happy to give up their lives to become our food. Some of it was very hard to read. I guess my issue is i didn’t really understand the main character. For most of the novel, he seems more enlightened and repulsed and against it all….he talks a lot about animals, how silent the world is without them, about his pets, visiting the now empty zoo all the time - and of course, how sad he is about the puppies.….and then things went in another direction. I found it odd that once Jasmine became pregnant, he would always refer to the baby as his, never hers. I thought he had feelings for her at first, but really, he treated her like a pet. She acted like a pet. So I was not surprised at all by the ending…was only curious as to why he suddenly had the same callous disregard for life as everyone else, once his needs had been met. I read this book in one sitting. Took me a few hours, but it was just one of those books I couldn’t put down. I didn’t love it, though, mainly because I didn’t understand the ending.

@@vanessaperezlopez1431 A rather bad cult propaganda piece not particularly scary for those who are not indoctrinated as children. It's available for free on KZfaq. It's called "Years of the Beast" It scared teenaged me, but you'll probably laugh at it.

*there might be mild spoilers in my comment* I just finished it today. I usually don't read heavy books like that, but for some reason it intrigued me when I heard about it. I have a rather weak stomach when it comes to gruesome stuff, so I didn't even expect to finish it lol. The beginning did make me a bit nauseous, but I read someone say that after a couple of chapters "it's not that bad". And it wasn't, even though like you said the process of preparing the meat and later on the experiments were rather unpleasant, to put it nicely. And like you mentioned, the puppy chapter was the worst. I was worried they would get hurt after the first mention of them. When I realized what was happening I just quickly skimmed through some of the dialogues, and even they were too much. And the ending - I kinda saw it coming when I was close to being done with the book and I saw how many pages were left, but it still was worse than I expected. Also, I felt like the main character thought he was better than other people because he didn't eat meat and because he acknowledged that it was made of people. Well, the ending definitely threw that all away. Overall, it was a good book for me. I can't say I *liked* reading it, but there was something about it that made me want to read it until the end. And thank you for this awesome review, I feel like we had very similar thoughts about the book :)

I sort of like cannibalism as a topic, because it's so extreme and sort of rare in culture, and offers up so many questions about meat. it's fascinating and I always think about what it would be like to eat human flesh and just the thought makes me gag 😂

This book is...fascinating for all the wrong reasons? Idk, wording stuff is NOT my strong suit. I agree that cannibalism for pleasure is absolutely ABHORRENT...but...what if it's a desperation case, like the Donner Party...or this book?
@ErinMegan
@ErinMegan Жыл бұрын
Yeah I get what you’re saying! For me, it’s not a necessity in this book. No one needed to find a substitute for meat, they could just eat other things. They would have adapted without it.

Yeah, I can't do the animal abuse. I hate Crime and Punishment solely for the horse scene. It ruined the entire book and I hate that book forever. I understand what the author is doing with such a scene, but I can't have that on my heart. Not an animal. Thank you for that warning!
