In this video, we're going to share a little-known secret about Tennessee - its thriving winemaking industry. Tennessee may be famous for its whiskey, boasting the renowned Tennessee Whiskey Trail, but it's also home to the Tennessee wine trail, featuring over 60 participating sites.
Tennessee's Wine History:
Back in the late 1800s, European settlers, primarily from Germany, introduced grape growing and winemaking to Tennessee. They saw potential in areas that were considered unsuitable for other agricultural purposes. By 1880, Tennessee had over a thousand acres of vineyards, producing nearly 65,000 gallons of wine. Sadly, Prohibition in 1919 halted much of this industry.
The Resurgence of Tennessee Wine:
Fast forward to today, and we're witnessing the resurgence of the wine industry, especially in West Tennessee. Our recent road trip took us from Nashville to Paris, Tennessee, and one of our first stops was at Grinder's Switch Winery in Centerville, Tennessee.
Grinder's Switch Winery:
Grinder's Switch Winery has been producing award-winning wines for almost a decade. The hand-built log cabin that once served as the family home of the winery's owners has been transformed into a cozy tasting room, where we had the pleasure of sampling a wide variety of their wines, as well as the options available for tastings.
City Expansion:
In the spring of 2015, Grinder's Switch Winery brought their fantastic wines to the heart of the big city by opening a location in downtown Nashville, right in the historic Marathon Village. It's the perfect opportunity to enjoy a bit of the countryside in the heart of the city.
The Name's Story:
Here's a fun fact: Grinder's Switch was the fictional hometown of the comic character Minnie Pearl. A name with a lot of character and history!
