More likely she missed that feeling... So, when that young handsome Italian aristocrat came to her bedroom and was very tender with her, she liked it a lot. And day by day was getting addicted for his company and lovemaking. Many girls/women feel that way. No common sense here... And after being humiliated by her aristocratic lover, she chose the poor, homeless younger Italian who tried hard to seduce her sexually. Because he would never behave the way her titled lover did. And he would never leave her. But the ending meant that the aristocrat predicted her future. I bet he would kill her if it was based on a true story. Because he hated her and learning about her getting a younger handsome Italian would drive him over the edge...

It's a Very cheap remake of the 1961 classic film with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty. Olivier Martinez not at all convincing as the Latin lover and the gay Tennessee Williams character is utterly redundant (in the novella and original film it was Karen Stone’s journalist lady friend). Only Anne Bancroft is worthy of mention here; but still Lotte Lenya as La Contessa was superb in the 1961 original and should have won the Oscar.

Yes, a lot of people just don't get the ending. The boy in the street is desperate, hungry, and envious of Paolo's financial success with Mrs. Stone. He also believes that he also has what Mrs. Stone needs. When Paolo moves out, which is the moment the street boy has been waiting for, he seizes his chance, and Mrs. Stone, throws him the keys to her apartment. He then takes Paolo's place.

He's writing about a different time just after the war ended. And nobody understood women more than he did. Uncomfortable isn't it? And death's got nothing to do with this story. The street boy is not coming to kill Mrs. Stone - he's going to replace Paolo.

I'm guessing that Mrs. Stone is really a fill in for Tennesse himself and some infatuation with a younger man. I agree: with age, we can evolve into something more.

She had a real life but after her husband's death she was playing a role to survive, a tragic role she wrote for herself. She retreated into the actress part of her life. She didn't seek love nor chase it because she still loved her husband & always would. They were soul mates & no one could take his place in her heart. However she sought companionship, but not necessarily love. She knew what those people were about in a short moment having been in the theatre she could recognize acting when she saw it. Her good friend warned her about the countess early on plus she was intelligent. Perhaps in the middle she was hoping he..her lover would cease to be playing a part...that he would be real & he approached that but withdrew. However had he ceased acting, then she could maybe find room in her heart for real affection for him. I think she even wanted him to do so she could really help him. However in the end he yielded to his bitterness at the loss of his former aristocratic life, like the countess who was bitter thru & thru, devoured from the inside out with vengeful regrets. The boy who followed her understood I believe the game being played. The script mystified himself, as perhaps a creep or pervert but when she confronted him he cringed fearfully, almost like a child. That didn't seem dangerous to me, but rather pitiful. I think he sensed her need & knew his own to be real. The pressures of life weighing down hard on them both in different ways, circumstances that either of them had no way of changing. The movie had twist & turns to keep from the audience from guessing what next. I think at the end the two remaining, each had something to offer the other which was desperately missing. I think perhaps they could rescue each other from a grim fate. Build a relationship on mutual, authentic need & be grateful in goodness to each other lifting the other from despair. Anyway, it was ended in such a way each person could decide for themselves how the story finished, I think that's referred to as a cliff hanger. It kept me on edge for sure, excellent portrayal how unexpectedly life can maneuver us to go in directions never thought possible. Tennessee Williams had a flare for writing stories that drew out intense sentiments from his audience. He kept them entertained & challenged imaginatively.

Vivian Leigh's performances are indelibly etched on the minds & hearts of those -- like me -- who have seen her numerous films. Waterloo Bridge & A Streetcar Named Desire showcase two of her greatest, poignantly painful performances full of heartbreak, despair and pathos.

Yes Vivien Leigh was suberb. She had the vulnerability and stillness which Mirren couldnt match. Leigh was of course, like Mirren a consument Shakespearean actress but Leigh because of her life experience subjectified and carried off the role with ease.

Yes, Vivien Leigh nailed the touching vulnerability of the character - but this more explicit version makes the arc of the story clearer. The street boy's not planning to kill Mrs Stone. He's going to be the next in line to benefit from her generosity. I really like this lush more cinematic version of the story - but Helen Mirrin vulnerable? No.

I did see that, I recalled it at your description. Have to say I like them both, but often times the first takes a special place. Strikes the deepest chords of sympathy in ourselves. 👍
