@Ilya Kuryakin What kind of questions is that? You are trying to force people to prefer Graf? Something is wrong with you. I've never liked your approach on KZfaq. Especially after you accused me of being a liar when I had prove that I was willing to share with you, with Graf being poor sport after losing @USopen semifinals in 1986 to Navratilova and made very negative comments about Evert and Navratilova. You called me a liar? Who attended the match, and is a Graf fan? Then you decided to bring up race? In why you like certain players. You are a racist and a disgrace IMHO.

I think only until 95 or 96. Seles's father was ill with cancer starting in 95 which would have seen her decline until mid 98, by which point the next generation which were full of bad match ups for her were taking over anyway. Graf meanwhile was pretty much done with injuries after the end of 96, apart from a brief comeback to form in mid 99.

@@monica012077 That is the same kind of rational as people who say Seles and Graf would have no chance vs peak Serena and Venus. Or that Evert would get destroyed in the modern game, since watching her play on video you would sure think that, but are you really willing to just say that. Tennis like all sports advances with time with upgraded equipment, nutrional techniques, training techniques, and so on. It is why the times in sports like swimming are constantly going down, and swimming isn't even affected by the massive equipment and racquet updates like in tennis. The only accurate way to compare players is how they fared in their own time.

@@douglasbrown5671 Monica did beat serena when she was in her prime at a California tournament. Steffi best both williamses at a 99 tournament and also beat venus on her way to Wimbledon final. They may not have been at their peak but they were close. Monica definetly beat serena in more of a peak period oh and she did beat venus at Australian open 2002 after venus had been winning slams. I could tell both Monica and steffi game evolved after playing bigger power hitters later in their career. Problem was they were older by that point.

yes biut dont forget this two-handed backhand and look at the game again and see how often steffi makes positional errors, -which probably also has to do with the fact that, she is not so much (as bsw when she plays 2020 with 18) accustomed to the players two-handed backhand and such angles , so played, which is also by her (in this case seles) position to the ball during and before these shots even more unfamiliar, .., in addition, monica has an additional advantage, so to speak (-if the players against and or with whom she plays are not used to and are not used to it themselves not have a corresponding two-handed backhand parrat) she has a significantly wider field, which not only brings advantages when she hits but also that she is less in distress and feels less "needed to run , .., but you probably have to say that monica this so-called two-handed backhand game, at least made popular and that she might be the second best player if she were (as far for her relationly) faster, stronger, more enduring this, maybe even the second best ever, .., so if steffi also plays one or her (i.e. steffi’s own) two-handed backhand (maybe even without a two-handed backhand ( , ..,) -I don’t want to claim anything but that’s no joke -> if you think so) and monica, as I said, faster this, that, that second best tennis player at least as far as (as people say) so-called world ranking list "so far, ..

No. Not a very gifted athlete (she was not fast of foot but made up for it with great anticipation); she was very poor going forward when it was not on her terms (ie coming into the forecourt to finish off a point with a winner). She was a great strategist; she had great mental strength. She had very good hand-eye coordination taking the ball on the rise kept the pressure constantly on her opponent. She out-thought Graf here. Graf was stronger in the 3rd set physically, she should have worn seles out and turn it into a running match but she kept trying to hit through Seles. In 1999 in the SF Graf uses shallow slices and drop shots to expose Seles very mediocre forecourt play, volleys, and really really poor overhead.

@@joeyconvery2055 she really doesn't. Graf was a much better athlete: stronger, faster, better endurance. Seles is the one hanging on in the end forced to stretch so many times and hit emergency shots were she uses only one hand when she normally used two. She's also hitting moonballs to try and stay in the point (wise!). Graf makes the mistake of trying to hit past her using only length to her strokes and pure power. Had she used drop shots and sharply angles slices and drawn seles into the forecourt she could have exposed seles's weak volley and/or lobbed her. seles's lack of foot speed would have been exposed. She was number 1 it is true. Seles was a great competitor; very mentally tough. But Graf was experiencing severe personal problems through 1991 largely focused on her father's infidelity, the scandal that caused, and the subsequent divorce of her parents. By 1992, she was on the comeback. She thrashed Seles a few weeks later at Wimbledon.

To anticipate it, Monica won rightly! Not know how was better but because she had the greater will. From the beginning because Steffi is insecure and he doesn't believe in himself. You could see that on the Face from Steffi! Believed in itself towards the end of the game, by then it was too late for her! ...Graf made that impression only twice! The one time at this Final and the second time was in the Wimbledon Final 1999! ( Lost vs. Davenport) That shows how important the psyche is in tennis! Incidentally, this phenomenon has also been seen in Serena Williams in recent years! She could beat the competition at any time, but has lost confidence in herself! .... Steffi, Serena, Martina, Chris and Monica are the best tennis players of all time, for me! 💐💐💐👍👏

@Illya Kuryakin think we are agreeing seles was better from 90-93 ...btw the commentators themselves say something was fundamentally wrong with the rankling system as one player with three slams and three year end championships should not be in risk of losing their number one ranking if they lose one sla,m match...sorry seles was the clear number one here and up to mid 93 ..steffi was number 2 for three years and that stings for graf fans because hamburg changed all of that..graf had no seles to go through and no real rival ( Sanchez only beat her when graf had a bad day or a slower surfaces ) from 93-96 one factor you have to look at as stefii's main rival was gone for most of that time or when monica returned she was not match tough or fit ( in 95) or not the same and or injured (in 96).. Graff deserves all of her victories from 93-96 not her fault Monica was stabbed but what an asterixi it has put behind all of these accomplishments... love these highlights shows them both playing so good we never really saw that after the 93 auusie final..

@Illya Kuryakin lol oh so you are predicting if graf won the 93 French she would be number one does that take into account that Seles was removed from the hamburg and probably would have won it....graf did try to play many small tournaments to artificially bump her ranking and avoided seles from 90-93 in the smaller tournaments or lost early when monica was waiting in the finals. Graf is not the GOAT. In fact, it’s shocking how few records in the WTA world record book that she actually holds. Graf has the golden grand slam and most weeks at number one, but that’s about it. She has a shocking amount of losing head-to-head records at 9. She has a winning record against 3 of the all-time top 10 players. Evert holds the record with winning H2Hs against 4 of the all-time top ten. Graf does not have the most titles at the Austrian, French, Wimbledon, or the US Open. Those records belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She does not have the most GS titles on the various surfaces.. hardcourts, clay, or grass. Those records again belong to Williams, Evert, and Navratilova. She’s not the best at any grand slam or on any surface. She doesn’t have the highest winning percentage all time or at the grand slams. Those records belong to Court. So how again is she the GOAT? She isn’t. Illya Kuryakin Monica finally put Steffi out of her misery in those last 2 games. Monica winning 6 of the last 8 points with her powerful groundstrokes and brilliant angled shots and consistency. Steffi was in shock after this devastating loss to Monica. I like Steffi and she is one of the best of all time. I felt bad for her because she looked heartbroken. Steffi played her heart out but against Monica, it was not enough. Monica is a warrior on the court. Graf/Seles rivalry reminds me a lot of Federer/Nadal rivalry. One was a single hander and the other was a double hander. Seles was 5 years younger than Graf while Nadal was also 5 years younger than Federer. The Federer/Nadal rivalry of today was the outcome if Graf/Seles rivalry lasted a little bit longer, i mean both physically and mentally healthy. Both Seles and Nadal was really challenging Graf and Federer at their own rights.

Both of them were class acts-totally different though personality wise. Graf was far more athletic but Seles had a slight mental edge especially at crunch time and as Graf said later was terribly powerful off both sides. I noticed Seles wisely went for the weaker Graf backhand rather than the forehand. I noticed around 2:02 Graf was hitting multiple forehands with terrific power to try and overwhelm Seles and end the point. That had to be a hard match to lose that close in the end

I remember watching this at the time. The most exciting match I think I've ever seen. Going into the match, Graf was at a low in general. Really lacking in confidence with her game. For the previous couple of years, she'd been erratic and nervous in many of her matches, often looking like she didn't want to be there. In her route to the final, she'd been all over the place and in many ways was lucky to get past Sanchez after losing the first set 6-0. The first set of this match was indicative of her poor form and state of mind. But something strange then happened - the crowd really got behind her and she lifted her game. The crunch came though when she managed to get ahead in that final set. The problems of the past couple of years came back to haunt her and she didn't have the confidence to take the match.

I believe Steffi Graf and Seles are a lot like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. If Monica’s fate were different, I think their rivalry and grand slam count would be similar to Roger and Rafa’s. If we had to only consider Monica’s years of absence, who would you think would win those GS if Monica was still competing? 🤔 Please be thoughtful in your reply and consider the other competitors who won those Slams were either their shining moment, stronger on that tennis surface, etc. No matter how great a tennis player was, it’s impossible to stay and maintain their peak for a prolonged period of time. I am a Steffi Graf fan and I believe she is the Greatest of All Time but I do like to understand other tennis fans perspectives. What are your thoughts? 1993 French Open - Steffi Graf 1993 Wimbledon - Steffi Graf 1993 US Open - Steffi Graf 1994 Australian Open - Steffi Graf 1994 French Open - Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 1994 Wimbledon - Conchita Martinez 1994 US Open - Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 1995 Australian Open - Mary Pierce 1995 French Open - Steffi Graf 1995 Wimbledon - Steffi Graf

@Ilya Kuryakin Hello again! No debate here because imho, Steffi is the greatest ever! Yes yes yes 🤗 Curious, what specifically do you disagree? Is it my statement that they could’ve had the same GS count if Monica’s tragedy didn’t happen? If so, think about in terms Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Like Rafa, I believe Monica was her true rival and contemporary. Just like today, Roger and Rafa are now tied but is Rafa a better player or tied as the greatest? I still believe Roger is the better player and the greatest ever and I would feel the same way between Steffi vs Monica. Don’t worry, her fans including this one writing these long comments 😇 will always view Steffi as the best ever!!!

@Ilya Kuryakin I always say that Steffi has a similar style of play like Roger but sometimes I wish she also had the same non-drama filled life he had too. Steffi’s blackmail, taxes, and Monica’s tragedy would have derailed any other tennis pro’s career with all the negative attention she had to endure, but she prevailed thanks to her fighting spirit and the support of her family/friends. I know Steffi’s career would have been more brilliant (Monica’s as well) if those events never happened!

The last victory for Seles in RG. Seles had a superb day. Graf was good, too - but not in top form here. This and the slow surface were the reason for this long and epic match. Some weeks later on a fast court - Seles had no chance against Graf in better form in Wimbledon.

ALERT! THIS IS NOT THE FULL MATCH! After reaching 4-1 for Seles in the first set, the video skips the next 3 games of that first set that will in fact go to 6-2 in favor of Seles, and then the video starts again in the second set at 2-2, skipping the first 4 games. Altogether dropping 7 games of the first segment of the match, which, for us, is a sheer loss. An explanation would have been "de rigueur" and welcome. But we gain a clear and sharp image and good American commentary. The banging on an electronic wooden box to illustrate each shot is a bit overdone, and at times excruciating, to the point of covering up the legendary FOR-TEH scream from Seles, without which no match is her match. Monica's hair is dark here, which seems to be her natural color, although she likes to come along in many other matches as a blonde. In terms of leaping around, rushing across and forward, Graf is definitely superior, and indisputably one of the best athletes among female players, if not the very best. She holds herself straight, with her head high, and shoulder blades back, and seems much freer and agile in her movements. Seles, by contrast, has a tendency to stoop a bit forward, bending her head towards the ground too much, making her more compact and less open and supple in her lateral motions, instead of looking up and pulling her shoulder blades back for a better posture. I only wish Seles had had a good personal fitness coach as the best female players of our time do.

I remember this match very well. In 1992, Monica had become more powerful than the previous three years in which Steffi had managed to beat her (except in 1990). And Steffi was still running after her best tennis. That year, Steffi had not yet found nor developed the right strategy to beat Monica (except on grass where her game was superior. On the other hand, Monica's game was much more efficient than Steffi on rebound ace surface). Then, between 95 and 99, Steffi played Monica in a different way using her short crossed sliced backhand very successfully. If Steffi could have served even harder and used her top spin backhand down the line more often - like Roger Federer does-, very few players would have beaten her.

@Max E Their rivalry left off with Seles winning the 93 AO in a strong fashion. This after winning 3 GS in both 91 and 92, do you actually think Monica wasn't going to own 1993? Of course she was but Steffi got really lucky. After the stabbing Seles was slower and only a shadow of her former self.

@Max E Seles would have won the same 3 GS in 1993 as she did in 91 and 92. Steffi was playing like trash then, the stabbing gave her the mental lift she needed. Good night deranged Graf fan. I'm so glad Serena Williams has consigned Graf's to history. A player who won one more slam than Graf while having to dismantle all her of rivals. With no assist from a crazy fan.

This Bud Collins dude kinda irritates me. At 8-8 in the final set during the final of a grand slam he says “A lot of errors”. They were both slugging it for hours. And hitting with serious pace pretty much constantly. And they are both going for it on every shot. Both are offensive players. They aren’t pushers. Errors will come but so will lots of winners. What does he expect at this stage? If they defended and looped the ball 8 feet over the net then there would be less errors. However I’d rather pull my toe nails out than watch two pushers play tennis.

@@bryguy0111 there were lots of points in this particular match that Graf could have easily won had she come to net and hit an easy volley. Instead, she allowed Seles to stay in the point and on many occasions Seles was able to turn defense into offense when the point should've long been over.

@@greatone33j If only Monica had hit much deeper groundstrokes, this match would've not even lasted for an hour. Steffi was so sluggish, deeper and angled groundstrokes would surely kill her easily.

@@saintelmosfire85 true...but there were plenty of points in this match where Steffi had Monica reaching and Monica was hitting the balls back very weakly. A lot of times this let Monica back in the point and she end up winning the point that should've long been over had Steffi cut them off at the net.

@@bryguy0111 Navratilova was coming in off weak groundstrokes and weak puffball second serves, which is why she was easily passed most times. And Seles still barely won. Graf would be coming in off much stronger shots than an old Navratilova's much weaker serve and groundstrokes, she lost 10-8 in the 3rd with a slew of unforced errors in the 1st and 3rd sets especialy, and not taking advantage of what would be easy putaway balls at the net which she is a competent enough volleyer (unlike Seles who sucks at the net, Graf isn't Martina at the net but is very good, way better than people like Seles, Date, or Huber) to finish off points like that.

Are u still sad Martina choke that final against Steffi? I mean she even said Graf is old her time has passed then why rattled when u’re up 6-4, 2-0 knowing just one point and bad call happens all the time (*coughing US OPEN 2004 QF Capriati vs Serena) and Steffi is old right? Even then she broke Steffi again to served for the match at 5-4 why she can’t served that one? And to be honest Steffi level at play during that final only C minus.
