The umpire handled the Sabalenka-Rybakina situation terribly. She seems to think that replaying the point is a 'neutral call', which is not the case. If the umpire was unsure (which is bad enough anyway...), she can't admit to being unsure and then award the call in favour of Sabalenka. Rybakina should have been given the point, 100%. On another note, Tomljanovic calling out Ostapenko's bullshit was priceless.

If the ump can't remember what happened 100%, she has to call a replay. Did she get the call wrong? Absolutely, but without video replay, it's simply not possible for one human to remember and see everything that happens on the court. Tennis should use replay.
@falks941
@falks941 2 жыл бұрын
@@jt10s I do see your point, but replaying the point is not a neutral unbiased call. It favoured Sabalenka. Obviously the main issue is that the umpire should have remembered what happened, but there is no "safe decision" in replaying the point and her terrible decision had a huge impact on the match. I agree with you though - replays should be allowed in tennis. I'm always surprised by how frequently umpires appear to make mistakes with the outcome of hawkeye challenges.
@braysmith264
@braysmith264 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah unfortunately, if the umpire isn't sure, they pretty much have to replay the point. I completely agree that it's not a neutral call at all, but it's the most neutral call they can make, and it's the current rule. I can't imagine why tennis doesn't use replay reviews outside of Next Gen tournaments, but she had to make that decision. She maybe could have changed her mind after she clearly heard Sabalenka say that she didn't hit the ball back, but this is more of an issue with tennis' insanely vague and outdated ruleset than the umpire. As for the Ostapenki situation... what the fuck is going on with fucking @Einars? Ostapenko was very clearly lying about her abdominal pain. Like, obviously so. She didn't seem taken aback and didn't defend herself when Tomljanovic called her out for lying to the entire crowd, and she didn't exactly seem emphatic about her position during the handshake. @Einars appears to be a pretty big Ostapenko fan despite her being infamous for throwing her racket at a ball boy and being a total ass on the court constantly. LOL I JUST NOTICED he called @Joel "a blind fan..." Jesus.

First clip is the reason why we need to include replay videos in the rules, I know umps and linespersons don't like it because it shows how useless and fallible they can be, but anytime a supervisor is called on court they should be able to uncall an umpire's wrong decision based on the video. It's always entertaining to see drama for an imaginary foot fault or else but it's so frustrating for the player.
@falks941
@falks941 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I don't get that stance by umpires. It doesn't have to show them up as fallible. If VAR were available, that woman in Rybakina's match could have gone straight to VAR without making a decision based on uncertainty. Supervisors are largely useless in these situations - I've only once seen a supervisor overturn a poor decision by an umpire (Hsieh-Cibulkova) at Wimbledon, but otherwise they're just happy to get things wrong.

I feel like some umpires should understand that they've got the right to admit they did wrong. The umpire in the clip just generated frustration towards the player by making obvious the fact she was wrong without admitting it. Repeating "she did hit the ball" with a lost look because she obviously knew she had no idea about how the point ended is really a pity. The worst is that she kept saying that the point should be replayed without explaining why. "I DID A MISTAKE!!" JUST SAY IT FOR GOD'S SAKE. Of course you've got the right to do some, you're even expected to do some mistakes. The less you do the better, but it's so embarassing to see grown adults who don't want to admit that they did wrong. A simple "excuse me" would have been absolutely perfect, and then if the player argues he'll understand he also does mistakes sometimes. Of course an umpire who does 100 mistakes in a match would be horrible, but come on admitting you did one isn't a big deal. It'll grant you respect, more than fleeing the situation.

Those people have paid a lot of money to watch the tennis. The least they can expect is the players to show some effort. Paire is notorious for his lack of trying, he's worse than Kyrgios, who at least tries flamboyant shots and wins matches. The umpire should have called it earlier in the set rather than leave it until the final game.

Jelena is a massive drama queen, what she tried to do to Ajla was disgraceful. There are other ways of going about it than what Ajla did but she probably just panicked in the moment and got frustrated which is understandable. Jelena felt pain while serving throughout the match yet takes it when she’s about to receive lol and can still run anything down afterwards. Ajla beat her despite her trying to create an unfair playing field yet she still has the audacity to say she would have beaten her at 50%. If Jelena played at 50% Ajla would have beaten her in 2 lol.

Notice how Sabalenka admits that she didn't hit the ball (or even come near it), but then proceeds to claim the challenge call put her off her shot, despite the fact she was never going to reach the serve and even put her own hand up to challenge. There's no way the call put her off, you have to react almost as soon as the server strikes the ball on a first serve like that to have a chance of reaching it. The call came after the ball landed. Pure crafty gamesmanship from Sabalenka again.

wow that first clip.. it was even worse than it first looks and if i had been in Rybakinas place, i'd had insisted on the supervisor. Not because of the point, but the umpire was not only wrong, but straight lied to Rybakinas face multiple times by stating that Sabalenka has hit the ball back, multiple times. So she said she saw her hitting the ball even though that never happened. And when Sabalenka was at least somewhat admitting she didnt hit it back the umpire got exposed and suddenly tried to backup her wrong call with some more BS arguments, making the situation worse than it already was. There must have been no foundation of trust anymore at this point between player and umpire.

Remember he said in one match that he ate so many pain-blockers that do not help and the pain is even worse Injuries and other illnesses plagued his career. Tennis has lost all control on medical time-outs. All players just do what they want. They should have stricter or more clear rules on this. If you are injured to the point where you can't continue playing without disrupting the game, maybe you should just pull out of the match. I think these medical time-outs are very unfair to players who are not willing to use them in an unfair, dishonest manner, like Ostepenko did.
