Tip 1: Lead with LEFT hand on the serve.
The "Up together and down together" serve motions forces you to toss the ball low. Instead, you should lead with the left hand and let the right-hand lag behind. This produces a swing that is continuous, fluid, and natural!
Tip 2: Toss ball above the contact point.
Place the ball 18-24 inches above your serve contact point!
Using the Fence Drill to help measure up your ball toss. Make sure your elbow is back when doing this drill. The racket will accelerate into the fence and this is the feeling you want when you serve.
Tip 3: Understanding Tension
Start with the racket in the nondominant arm. You can establish tension with your right hand. Then when you go into your routine you can maintain that level of tension so you can feel the weight of the racket head.
Bonus Tip: Range Of Motion
When serving, your racket is traveling almost an entire circle after the racket drop. Do not force your arm forward, instead, throw upward and feel as is the arm stalls and let the arm come up over the arm and come through. This will be much easier with the 3 tips we covered! Happy serving!

Hi John, You are definitely right. Pronation is key, but the way it is often explained induces thinking of it consciously, which, in turn, leads to slowing down the serve. My point of view is that if you have a Continental grip and include all the ingredients you have mentioned, pronation takes care of itself - be it a flat, slice or kick serve. Thinking of one aspect consciously, whatever it is, will automatically slow you down and rob you of a lot of power. Thinking of individual parts is only helpful when shadow swings are executed in slow motion without a ball in order to ingrain certain elements. Mind you, the lagging part of your serve motion is absolutely vital in order to prevent both arms from going up simultaneously, which disrupts the fluid motion otherwise. Keep up the good work! Thanks John, super helpful. The drill / exercise at 3:00 is a really good one, I used to start my pronation way too early, this is the drill that fixed it for me.

First video of yours I've watched and I'm so impressed! So much of that resonated with me as a beginner, especially how high to toss the ball. I would experiment on my own initiative with various ball heights and tension levels in the swing arm, thinking I'm over complicating things, but now I see a pro taking about these things I can rest assured I'm not crazy.

Nice presentation - as usual. I like that you emphasize being loose enough so the racket can move, or as I like to say, "let the racket do the work." I like to think of the racket drop behind the back as a movement created by the upward motion of the body and side rotation of the shoulders. The drop can occur because the arm and hand are relaxed. Then as the server pulls the racket handle forward a whip-like action of the racket can occur with good racket-head speed. Does this seem right to you?

Hi David, Thanks for your comments, question and kind words. I think your description is accurate, particularly the relaxation and movement of the body to create the racquet drop. The "pull" is not something I feel, but if that creates the correct action for you, then that is great! Kindly, John

I think using the weight of the racket head is the real deal the rest is preference ht of toss etc. also trophy post is important

@@PerformancePlusTennis I have a 9 year old that has trouble getting to the ball on edge. She opens up earlier than right before contact. Her grip is correct. I can see that she needs to reach up more and hit up and not worry about hitting into the court. I saw your drills on hitting the fence (stay on edge right upto contact), bouncing the ball on the gorund and picking up the ball of the floor to simulate the edge to face racket turn. I am going to have her practice these. Are there any other drills that I am missing. Can you please advise? Thanks.

@@kartkan Hi Karthink, Thanks for your question. This concept is one of the hardest movements to perfect, particularly for young juniors.
