Ballads definitely aren't entirely dead for televote, it just has to be a GREAT ballad, whereas the jury often like even just mediocre ballads

I think there were many ballads last year because the contest was in Italy. This year there's more 'Britpop than usual (Latvia, San Marino, Azerbaijan, Ireland); more rock (Finland, Germany, Australia, Croatia); there's a lot of techno- and house-leaning pop (the UK itself, Iceland, Belgium). So, this Eurovision does feel very British

I would like to hear the "Rest of the World" results from both the semis and the Grand Final be announced as a separate thing. However...I like the tension in the way the qualifiers are currently announced in the Semi-Finals. So maybe only show the scores of the "Rest of the World" voting, but still announce the qualifiers in the same way afterwards Love from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA 🇺🇸 AKA "Rest of the World"

I’m worried a song like Blanka’s Solo will go through on the diaspora vote, which is generally disliked and not well performed- it would deffo not get through with jury. I’m hopeful it won’t as Polish people don’t tend to like it, but they’re not all of the semi final voters.

It's kind of interesting that the decrease of ballads happened already in this year, because back in November when the EBU announced these changes, the most national final-line-ups and even some song-selections were done. Maybe it's getting even heavier in 2024, if the EBU does not change it again because of bad reception. But maybe it has also something to do with the reception of last years contest. Here in Germany, I read a lot of comments by casual viewers that were bored by the final just because of the amount of ballads in show (but also because Electric Callboy was refused by NDR). I don't know if the casual viewership in other countries had the same reaction to it, but for me, it seems to be. Especially if you look at the Top 4 of the Televote in 2022 aka the four songs that recieved over 200 points in the Televote. These weren't ballads at all and it's not a new thing that successfull songs of the previous year does influence the line-up of the following year.

Yea i wonder if it was it a "bonus" aspect for the producers that less ballads would go through. like last year that 13-18 slot ballad streak in the final was killer, and both songs on either end, Moldova and Ukraine, were number 1 and 2 in the televote either side of it. They were dying for some upbeat 2nd half songs last year - Ela and Sekret would have been heaven for them. So i dont think its the main reason, but i think its definitely a bonus for the producers

Yeah, one of the best male vocalists on the Eurovision stage ever. And he came in 11th with the televote and finished 11th in the Grand Final as well, I'd be very surprised, if Greece had ranked higher than 20th this year, as it was 15th or 16th with the juries and just 10th with the public. I think that overall, more people were pleased to see Albania, not saying that Greece had a bad song, but it wouldn't have performed as well.

Tick Tock and Verona… the biggest injustices for me 😅, such great entries, still love them 💖 Verona was my number 1 that year, I was heartbroken For me the biggest issue with Eurovision is the fact, that only the top 10 countries get points. Yes, for the best songs it doesn’t matter. But it makes the bottom half of each show (especially the final) really inaccurate. You could basically be 11th in everyone’s ranking and end up with 0 points at the last place, whereas an entry which comes into the Top 10 in one ranking and last in every other’s ranking would have a higher place… I would be much happier if they gave points from 37 to 1 point; then we would have a more accurate picture of every songs impact 😊 Clearly this is an issue that has much effect on my country 😅)

I loved Tick Tock! Although I loved Hooverphonic as well. For me personally I would have rather had Albina with Tick Tock in the final than Cyprus with El Diablo. But oh well. I totally agree with you. I always tell people that the ranking (especially at the bottom) doesn't really reflect which song the least liked was. It sometimes happens that the a song that finished 26th in the final with 0 had a better average ranking than some of the songs that ended up getting more points. That just doesn't seem completely fair. Obviously giving points from 26 to 1 in the final wouldn't make a huge difference, the bottom places still wouldn't make it on the left side of the score board but it would definitely reflect more accurately which songs were overall liked more. Also no one would end up with zero points.

I'm ecstatic that more fun songs have a chance to qualify and after all, it's the people's decision. It will lead to the end of the 'jury bait' song. However, instead, we will get the 'televote bait' high tempo catchy song. Even sadder, good ballads won't see the light of day and will be underrated by the fandom. We can see this with Lithuania this year, which has genuinely good lyrics, vocals and ethnic music but MAY not get through! It COULD be the death of music for some! In my opinion though, the televote SHOULD be going for a few more jury-baity songs. If it's a ballad and draws up emotions and have good lyrics and vocals, surely people will notice and reward that though?!

I'm a guy who likes consistency so having two different systems for the semifinals and the final kind of bothers me 🙂. I guess though that in the semi the overall ranking is less important than in the final: it's mostly who qualifies or doesn't. And usually the result is about 90% the same with televote or 50/50, so the impact is not that huge and I get why the EBU thinks this is a pretty easy measure to take. I read comments of the executive producer that they did this to guarantee the credibility of the result after last year's scandal. One could argue that it's strange that they maintained the juries in the final then, but I for one am really grateful that they did because I'm a huge fan of the 50/50 system. My taste usually is very much in line with the 50/50 result and I love the juries for rewarding the slower and more complex songs that I like (Tout l'univers, Growing up is getting old, Saudade saudade) which were more or less overlooked by the televote. At the same time I can't forgive them for what they did to a fantastic song like Shum which was saved by the televote. So the combination works perfectly for me and I hope they will keep it. Edit: my score would be 10-4 in favour of the Combined In

yea i hope its something that they continue to tinker with, but i also see why they had to do something cos 6 countries were blatantly cheating and they cant just ignore it. Unfortunately they cant just rely on these delegations to just behave themselves and do the competition properly, so they needed to step in. Im worried about what will happen though when we (hopefully) get back to 18/19 sized semis. totally agree about combined in final. If people determine what goes through and what doesn’t, then we will (probably) see more hits (like arcade, mäneskin etc) since it appeals to majority. Great analysis. I'm not sure about how I feel about televote only. Last year I was so happy Switzerland went through. I didn't care for that song at all at first, but then when I saw it on stage it was just pure magic. Azerbaijan was also a great pick, it's one of those songs that grows on you. I think it's good to have a jury because they're better at spotting artistic merit...songs that are growers will have less of a chance now. This year I'm a bit concerned for songs I wouldn't otherwise be, such as Netherlands, Australia, Lithuania, Estonia ...

I expected the effect to be about twice as large and really did not like the change as the juries tend to save good songs quite often. @@ESCTom Yes, the juries are unfortunately lacking quite often. There is no way to ever make a jury function in the way you would actually want, but it does not help to put people there that are known and therefore can be corrupted. We do need a counterbalance to offset the effect of votes that are quite clearly bad sportsmanship, like diaspora votes. Obviously I feel the criteria should be set up in such a way that I end up as a jury member. My votes are literally the best I can think of.

Sometimes televote success can be equated with songs that are ‘basic’ or having ‘lowest common denominator’ appeal, however the alterative qualifiers from previous years on televote alone are mostly very credible/decent selections. Also, I still can’t believe how Konstrakta did so much better with televote than jury last year. Maybe the televote taste is getting more discerning/sophisticated than the juries ....sometimes.

I think that is something viewers would very much like to see - especially those from non-EBU or non-participating countries who had bothered to vote. Perhaps they could be tagged on the end of the jury vote? if they just get encompassed in the amalgamated televote it really loses a connection and involvement with that audience, and also for the rest of us. In the future? Perhaps separate continental tele-votes (re-branding and marketing on a worldwide scale) and, as technology moves on, other ways to vote rather just by phone or app

Thank you for this analysis Tom, I always think its interesting to look at things like this, especially given that there are changes to voting in the semis this year. I was surprised by how many televote qualifiers I actually agreed with as I typically lean more jury. I hope with what you were saying of the difference generally being 1-2 songs each year thats different that hopefully that will mean we will see some "jury" songs qualify and still have a mix in terms of genres we'll get with the qualifiers. I think something I'll be paying particularly close attention to is how many supposed "televote" songs qualify this year, particularly from semi 1 because with a number of the prediction videos ive seen, people are discounting the few "jury" type songs in semi 1 (aside from loreen but lets be real, thatd be a major upset). I hope that pattern of 1-2 songs difference continues this year (meaning we get some jury songs).

Perhaps there should be more semis if there are more countries participating? What i really would like to see is more points. They won't do it, because of the iconic douze points, but really it's a bit stupid to not have ranked voting or something. It would also allow voters to see their votes counted, even if they were the only voter for Croatia(totally random example ;-) in their country. This would also be good for the EBU, because it drives up voter participation.

I was looking at the 20 songs that were selected each year to really find out if ballads were cut off by the televote, and I don't think so. Yes, the percentage of upbeat songs is always bigger, but we have a great amount of mid tempo and slow tempo songs as well. Just take a look at the top3 televote winners from the past 10 years in finals, 9 out of the 30 top3 televote songs were true ballads, 8 were midtempo songs, and 11 were upbeat songs. So as you can see, the pattern continues in the finals. We have more upbeat songs getting points overall, but if you combine the mid and the slow ones, their number are much bigger than the fast tempo ones. Because when we look just at the bottomline entries between juri and televote, yes, juri saved more ballads and televoters prefered more energetic songs, but it's not true that ballads don't do well with the televote. Just as an upbeat song reception, the ballad must be professional, a good song, with nice staging and well sung. There's nothing to do with the tempo of the song, it's the whole package

I think next year is when we'll start seeing the full effect of tele-only semifinals, since at the time of the announcement in November I'd imagine plenty of broadcasters had already planned out (to varying degrees) their 2023 selection process on the old system. But I've already seen changes in attitude during the NF season from fans encouraging or discouraging votes for various songs based on how they *_think_* they'd do in the semi televote. I'm not seeing a return to 2000s Eurovision thankfully - Big 5+host are still free to appeal to juries, and semifinalists are welcome to gamble on more jury-friendly songs for the final - but I think plenty of countries are simply content with appearing in the grand final and they might change their strategies accordingly - for better or worse.

If we take the 2022 contest as an example then I'm very happy because the Jury last year carried boring entries like Switzerland and Azerbaijan to the Final who had zero televote support, and massively hurt countries like Albania who was already battling a 1st position in the running order. (And in the Final the jury massively helped Australia for some reason with zero public support). However, in general, I still think the Juries can be important in supporting entries that are hurt by the running order, are not 'joke entries' or 'party songs' which the Televote almost exclusively rallies behind. I also worry that having televote-only voting in the Semis will make all the countries come up with gimmicks , jokes and stupid staging just to get public support. I also think it will be very weird to have the Jury randomly brought back for the Finale - we are going to see some very big differences between the Semi results and Final results

@@trildi When I say 'gimmick songs' I don't mean the old troll entries that used to come in dead last place like Euro Neuro (Montenegro 2012), Ireland Douze Points (Ireland 2008), Leto Svet (Estonia 2008), Aina Mun Pitaa (Finland 2015) etc. etc. When I say 'joke entries' and 'party songs' I don't mean that in a negative way, I'm just trying to highlight the upbeat, unserious entries that capture the attention of the Televote either through their staging or through the song itself - most casual European viewers think Eurovision isn't that serious and rally behind songs they think are funny. For example Trenuletul (Moldova 2022), Party for Everybody (Russia 2012), We are Slavic (Poland 2014). There's nothing wrong with any of these entries and there really aren't many of them each year. But this year has a MASSIVE split between the quality, memorable top 10-15 songs, and the really mid, forgettable entries at the bottom half. People are finding are actually finding hard to pick their top 10 semi-final qualifiers not because they have to decide between 12 great songs, but because they've picked 6 qualifiers and have to pick 4 boring, forgettable songs to qualify instead. I just have a feeling that these boring entries will start to come up with gimmicks (like hamster wheels, bad projections, props and unusual dancers) to try and get some attention from televoters. It makes for an interesting contest but also makes me think their could be some awful stagings this year :)

I agree and disagree with you. I myself hate joke and gimmick entries. But party songs and humorous songs are not the same as them. And those are the ones that the televoters rally behind. Also, even if a “joke” entry won cause of televote, doesn’t that tell something about the other entries that year? I feel like ESC has always been kinda of a good indicator of how the people in Europe are feeling about certain subjects. So even if an entry I don’t particularly like some year wins, there’s usually some sorta deeper/prevalent reason for it. And so I think that’s good. I don’t think that the ESC is Idol/Talent/Voice whatever. It’s so much more and not necessarily about finding the next “star” of Europe or even the best performer. As cheesy as it is, it’s about finding the act that speaks the most to the masses and unity amongst countries (🤮🫣😄). I mean it is kinda crazy, if you think about it, how so many of us are tuning in at the exact same time all over Europe. Just to watch some television show and that so many of us are also voting and participating? Just kraizi

@@oonanas6507 I 100% agree with you - I think I've got myself lost along the way trying to overexplain what I meant by 'fun' and 'gimmicky' performances. I really don't mean those words as positive or negative at all, they just are what they are. I think it's just a fact that the entries with the biggest gaps between Juries and Televotes every year have always been those entries that are fun, poppy, catchy, upbeat songs with a memorable prop, concept or idea that the Televoters back. I am always so much happier to see entries that are unloved by the Jury but loved by the Televote (Moldova 2022, Norway 2019) than entries that are unloved by the Televote but massively pushed forward by out-of-touch juries (Azerbaijan/Australia/Switzerland 2022) Back to my original point haha - my main worry is that we'll see some random entries this year trying to come up with bad, stupid, goofy ideas that don't match the artist or song, just to stand out in the SemiFinals that are now 100% televote. I personally hated everything about Subwoolfer's 'Give that wolf a banana' last year (it was truly cringe-inducing) but I could respect that they had a fully-thought out idea and had the concept ready when they first made the song. What I'm dreading to see this year, is entries with like a random giraffe costume onstage or a silly tennis racket prop just to capture attention when it has nothing to do with the song. I'm probably completely wrong to try and police what each artist does, and I do want to be encouraging of new ideas and the for the delegations to try and use these higher budgets to come up with something new. I just don't want to see the artists transparently trying to pander to the public to try make it out of the Semis because we'll all be able to tell when they're not being authentically themselves etc. that's all haha

I wouldn’t want the weird entries to disappear completely, cause they’re hella entertaining 😄 BUT when their sole purpose is to be weird to get “joke-votes” I think we’ve gone to the wrong direction. Bonus: The jury votes should just be more in-tuned with the current music and the tastes of the audiences. Because the biggest differences don’t always come from the “weird” entries. Last year there were juries that didn’t give any votes for Ukraine, but then the countries televoters gave full 12p. My country did that and I’ve never been more embarrassed for my jury 🤦🏻‍♀️

I agree with most of your analysis. Just a few points: 1. Albania 2021 was ethnic not a ballad. 2. The Netherlands should not have qualified in 2018 with that staging. The song was good, but he ruined it with those backing dancers. 3. I'm not a fan of 100% televote. I fear we will return to the days of the early 2000s when televote caused more bloc voting. Bringing back the jury was the best thing ESC did. However, the past two years I've noticed that jury is becoming more guilty of bloc voting. 4. No televote 0s? What about 2021? Four countries got 0 points from the televote. That was shocking. That's about it. Thanks for this video and analysis.

In the 1st semi final of 2019 there should have been a 100% compatibility between the televote top 10 and the combined top 10, but one Czech juror (Jitka Zelenková) voted in reverse order (she put her favorite last and her least favorite in first place), which was the reason Belarus qualified over Poland. Over the years, sometimes I preferred the combined qualifiers, sometimes the televote ones. Sometimes, I'm sad that both can't qualify. As someone who has both Nathan Trent and Gabriela Gunčikova in his top 5, I'm happy that the juries had their say at the time. Also, as much as I'm hurt by the Nathan's 0 points from the televoting (where did my couple of votes go, indeed, lol), I have to say that he (and Marius Bear) actually did quite well overall, finishing 15th and 16th overall. If we'd just focus on the final result, it's a pretty good one. Gabriela not as much, but still, she qualified, which makes her the first Czech entry to do so regardless. Sadly, people will still get 0s. Mostly from the Big Five, but also from the juries. The only difference is that the juries' 0 points are not ceremoniously announced, but just become apparent at the end of the voting. That's how James Newman and Manel Navarro got theirs, for instance. Perhaps getting rid of the ''douze pointe'' overall would've been a good idea, and having a 1-25 televote, so that every vote counts instead would be in order! Then there are cases like Hooverphonic and Albina, where I'd qualify both. Verona should have went in instead of Denmark. Norma John should have qualified, absolutely! I liked Isaiah, but NJ were better. Eugent Bushpepa and Yianna Terzi were both good, but yeah, he should have qualified. Also, mind that Eugent was 3rd in the R.O. and Nathan 2nd. So, with the better running order, the televoters might have responded a bit more. Sadly, R.O. is a nightmare in the large semis, which makes me judgmental of the producer-driven R.O.

I don’t like the 100% televote rule. The juries are there to still send some quality songs to the final. Televote vote on shitty soms so often. They should better do something like: top 7 with televotes qualify and the top 3 songs that got the highest jury score snd didn’t already qualify with televotes. And I also think televotes are unfair. I’m from the Netherlands and except 2019 we never got a lot of televotes. Most of the time not even more then 45. Even Norway got more in 2019.

I think that in the future, the AQ countries (big 5 + host) are gonna have a slight advantage as they can send a song with more appeal to the jury or in certain genres that are more likely to NQ in the televote semis. Basically the Big 5 + Host should be able to avoid 0 points from at least the jury from now on. Last year if you remove Switzerland and Azerbaijan from the final, that is 3 televote points and 181 jury points that need to be reallocated, and if you replace them with Albania and Cyprus, granted they weren't televote magnets as they were only borderline televote qualifiers but I imagine that Albania and Cyprus would take more than 3 televotes combined and definitely less than 181 jury points combined. So the result of the 100% televote semis is that there would be more songs competing for televote points and less songs competing for jury points, which would make it advantageous for AQ nations to send songs that are more jury friendly. That's just my opinion tho

The rules are clearly not meant to give points to rock, metal, rap, alternative, trap, r&b, ethnic sounds, ect. So it’s very disproportionate and unfair atm. I think it's not a good decision. Having a 50/50 is only fair to give every genre and every country a chance to shine. Televote is way more political and neighbour friendly than juries, and they often vote for the most crazy staging and upbeat songs, not necessarily for quality. That Ronela qualified with televote last year proves that. Also juries don't care that much about war situations, about beefs.. of course we critisize juries harder than ourselves. Tele and jury are two different groups with different criteria to vote. Of course you're not always going to understand jury. Also, the juries were brought back for a reason. They vote with different criteria to reward what televoters don't reward, to balance it all out.

You have to explain in excruciating detail that the same ranking the Juries use is applied to the total voting from televote, and then that is converted into points.. .very much like how Moldova and Portugal took the jury scores and converted them to the 12, 10,8 etc. If a given country was not in the toip 10 vote getters forma given country that song will get zero points, even if it got thousands of votes! Its literally a popularity contest, and if oyu aint popular enough, tough beans. I sure as hell hope the artists are made to understand that element, so they dont get TOO crushed. Apollo and Tick tock 😭 What's that ballad myth though? As if all ballads flop by default with the viewers... Arcade didn't come 2nd in the televote then? Or Voila that was a total flop... Oh wait. And what about the top 2 in 2017? They alone took 1300+ points in total. 16:15 Yes, 25 points. But 2019 wasn't far behind with 28. 20:00 You should check 2011 where there were A LOT of disagreements 😄

I don’t like the new system because some high quality songs which are more subtle and not that commercial to get a high public vote don’t have a chance. Also, some songs are not that impressive to the audience on the first listen, but when the song is given a second chance, the audience might like it more. The old system was great because there was a balance that made qualifying possible for both subtle high quality songs and for entertaining performances. I feel like this new system is all about the money because they want to please the audience in order to get more money from their votes.

As for 2022 sadly combined votes were better so maybe it has sense.

The televote only is going to be interesting. I just hope they will vote smart this year for example Georgia. Can't see them getting much love from the public

I personally prefer much more nq televote losers vs q jury winners in most of these cases, Andromache, Ronela, Danish language, Polish ethno, Finland over Australia, Timebelle and Estonian duo... Only Wrong Place would be my jury song of choice. Regarding 2023 semi 1 I have feeling that Czechia will flop and Malta will qualify. Azerbaijan, Latvia, Switzerland, Czechia and Ireland. Vesna had great studio song which will be hard to convert into good live performance. Serbia can be potential nq depending on his staging but the song is much easier to convert into live show

The only exact number I have is that in 2008, the total of all participation fees from all countries was €3.5 million

When I learnt about the new rules and no-jury in semis, I was over the moon and I really hope that one day the juries will be gone from the whole show (or at least: their power will be reduced to 30%) :P If a ballad or serious song is good it will have great result from the public too. Those who are sent as 'jury-bait' and not that good and only make the show boring and slow. One or two ballads one evening I can stand and sometimes even I like them, but when I know there'll be 2+ in a row I just don't watch them at all, go out of the room, call someone or start cleaning or whatever and as a result I'm not invested in the show enough to vote, having missed 1/3 of it.

Well at least we have a fond memory of Belarus to end their ever again participating. Short of another war, Lukashenko and his fascist realm are there until he dies
