Sad that Finland only got a honourable mention and wasn't in your top 5 here, since if you only count the last 3 years,, it'd been top of the list ;) This momentum & climb is nothing short of *HUGE* to us Finns, as we got so used to being underrated all the time in ESC before that! Or pre-2006, in any case. (But as you said, 2019 dropped the average, and even that was so undeserved, like how on earth could Darude deserve last place in semi...?!)

Hopefully in the coming years Ireland may actually feature on the list. Albeit, I’m delighted that Ireland is being talked about so positively by other channels such as Wiwibloggs and Alesia etc. The fact RTE had Bambi Thug on the Late Late Show for an interview on Friday hopefully shows that picking a good act generates so much positive attention for the broadcaster 👍🏻👏🏻🇮🇪 had we selected Connolly last year, RTE would have been on a decent 3 year streak from Brooke to Connolly to Bambi Thug. If you want to do another kind of analysis (I'm only commenting because you specifically asked for it), you could try to fit a straight line to best approximate the results for each country. Most spreadsheet software have a function to do that automatically (probably called "linear regression" or "model fit" or something like that). That way, each country will get a slope and you can just take the value of that slope, positive or negative, as the value to rank for a list like this. The maths is a little complicated but like I said you can do it automatically, and the picture you get kind of speaks for itself to explain why it's a reasonable way of ranking them. It would eliminate weird situations like Portugal starting to improve one year too early.

It really warms my heart to see Lithuania as one of the most improved countries because I have a soft spot for it as an underdog country that deserves to win one day and complete the Baltic Region. I believe they would have gotten a top five result in 2020 had the contest not been cancelled but maybe the time to reach a top five position may be coming sooner than we think. I think the reason I'm rooting for Lithuania is because I'm a Hetalia fan (a webcomic/anime about personified countries) and Lithuania's personification is my favorite character on that show and I want to write a fic tracking Lithuania's Eurovision journey through his eyes. But the shtick is that it won't be published until the year Lithuania actually wins Eurovision. It will appropriately titled "We Are the Winners."

@@ESCTom yeah, and you can say Lithuania has a victory song already ready for them. In fact, it was because of Hetalia that I got into Eurovision in the first place (that, and Doctor Who having a gap year between seasons in 2016). While obsessing over Hetalia fan vids I came across the series of Hetalia /Eurovision recaps where the songs snippets were accompanied by fan art of the European characters. Something like this: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rpxxebuJvZjXnZ8.html&pp=ygUSaGV0YWxpYSBldXJvdmlzaW9u Then I ended up checking out eurovision itself and that’s how I got into it.

Thank you for a great video! As a Finnish Eurovision fan I think that UMK is still a work in progress. I´m not comparing whoever wins this year with Käärijä or even Blind Channel. I think we will eventually win for the second time, but it´s not going to happen this year. A Top 10 position is possible and it would be amazing, but at least I´m confident that the UMK winner will qualify. Realistically I assume that our entry will land somewhere between Softengine ( 11. ) and The Rasmus ( 21. ). And that would still be historically a good result for Finland.

I respectfully beg to differ - I can't understand why should one settle for mediocrity when one could be great!! And why always expect the worst (and call it "realism"), but then I'm a bit different Finn from most, an eternal optimist 😂

@@florenna I absolutely agree, but I think that you missed my point. I´m not saying that Finland should settle for mediocrity. I´m just saying that I don´t see a potential Eurovision winner in this UMK selection. I think that UMK can and should be better next year even though the overall level is really good this year too and I´m sure that the UMK final will be an amazing show. Finland has a winning concept in UMK and many artists that could win the ESC, but the song has to be the right one.

I really love the way that you explain your method! For me, my metric is a percentage of how many points did a country receive: This helps mitigate the favouritism of the Big 5 because, for example, in 2023 the Big 5 could only get 960 points total, whereas those competing in semi one could get 1128. It means that Germany isn’t favoured by the metric because their lower threshold isn’t double everyone else’s (they rank 41st on my spreadsheet for the last 10 years out of 44 countries)
@ESCTom
@ESCTom 6 ай бұрын
ah interesting, although the problem with Big 5 considerations is that they have a tougher field, as they compete against the best of the best. whereas in the Sfs, the qualifier countries are competing against some real duds. I dont think theres a perfect way to account for that, but it would be interesting to try and devise. also for Big 5, i felt pretty confident that none of them would have made top 5 of either, as theyve all mostly been consistently good or bad. UK and GER only had their 1 good results

This is a great analysis video (as always!). It would be interesting for someone to have a meta analysis of countries per decade in the history of the contest - like who were the powerhouses per decade, growers and losers over time. Great video, as always. Every method is arbitrary, but this one is pretty simple and straightforward, so good job. 👍 Those momentums shift every year, so I'm curious how it will look after ESC2024, with 2013 dropping of the list, 2018 moving from recent 5 years to latter 5 years and 2024 as new data. O, BTW: you mentioned Switzerland's last 4 years being male ballads, but Luca Hänni wasn't a ballad. It was so uptempo and full with dancemoves he had to improve his stamina to makw it to the end of the song without being out of breath. 😂

As a Swiss I still wish we would go back to a national final. It‘s a great way to give attention to your country and multiple artists instead of just one. The public should be involved in the selection process and it‘s an important test to see who is a good performer. Also even with the old process the public definitely would have sent the same acts as the delegation has chosen internal. The success rather came with great / good songs from established artists (instead of rather rookies the years before) and huge improvements in the staging, as you have mentioned.
@ESCTom
@ESCTom 5 ай бұрын
The reality is that a lot of artist don’t want to enter an open selection because they don’t want to risk losing or feeling ashamed or embarrassed by having a bad result. That’s one of the advantages of an internal selection.

@BestesBart
@BestesBart 6 ай бұрын
Okay I have to leave my thoughts on this one… I think with a better broadcaster Romania wouldn’t be on this 'dropper' list because the songs they had were amazing. Imo Romania's song 2019 'On A Sunday' is one of the most underrated songs ever in eurovision but they have had a song in their NF that year which everyone wanted but that got downvoted by the Jury which had a lot more voting power than the televote. Roxen's 'Amnesia' was also a fantastic song but got screwed up by the staging. Even Theodor last year could have been a candidate that could qualify but we all knew what happened there. I loved Romania in eurovision the last years (they were my winner in 2019 & 2021, my 3rd in 2020, my 4th in 2017 and my 6th in 2022) and I really hope they will come back soon with the same (or even better) quality of songs and a way better broadcaster which can help them to convert the songs into a good staging.
@ESCTom
@ESCTom 6 ай бұрын
Yep I totally agree. "on a sunday" and "amnesia" were BOTH in my top 5, but a country's entry is more than it's song, its also the broadcaster, delegation, staging, decisions etc. so the broadcaster took qualifiable songs and non qualified them

Love it. Question: among qualifiers I understand final rank but how do you define rank among the non ones?
@ESCTom
@ESCTom 6 ай бұрын
I took their scores and averaged it depending on how many countries were in their semi final, as sometimes semis have 1 country more. Then I ranked those averages

I don't care how much switzerland improved. They are my least favorite country of the 2020s. The only country without a single song that i like. The highest i've put them was 30th with M. Bear Male sad boi ballads are the worst 🤣

In regards to the lyrics to Georgia’s entry last year, I believe Iru co wrote the song and she deliberately made the lyrics a bunch of word salad bc the song was meant to be about the random thoughts in your head or something like that, an interesting artistic choice for sure but obviously a lot of fans just got confused

its an interesting decision. but there was A LOT of available feedback out there saying it didnt work. For whatever reason, that feedback wasnt implemented

They made Roxen do choreography at the expense of her ability to sing the song in 2021 with a great, great song. That should never happen. If the artist can't move and sing at the same time, then drop the choreo.

yea thats a good point, i remember there being a huge reaction to Georgia in 2020 too. they were similar to Czechia though in that they came back the next year and it felt like the artist has given up?

@@ESCTomHello I am from Georgia, the problem with the broadcaster is that they barely have any confidence in adult Eurovision and the voting system is kinda punishing us as many of the close jury/Televoters allies have dropped out and GPB tends to send entries that more attract to juries than the televoters. But as a Georgian, I am hoping Nutsa will try to do something unique and try to stand out from the crowd.

Interesting video. My gut feeling going into this video was that Estonia and Norway are the two countries with the most momentum recently while Switzerland has lost momentum with their sad boy ballads.

Agree that Switzerland has lost momentum with sad boy ballads, but I don't see Estonia as a riser at all, they haven't even been in top 6 since 2012...! Whereas Finland has been in top 6 *twice* in the last 3 years, so to me it has way more momentum.
@adamtideman4953
@adamtideman4953 6 ай бұрын
@@florenna When I say momentum I'm thinking more of a shorter timespan instead of the last 10 year formula Tom was going with. I'm also including the quality of the songs this year and whether or not they are on an upwards trajectory. Finland while strong recently has had some duds like Jezabel and UMK this year is pretty mid compared to last year while Estonia, assuming they pick 5miinust has progressively gotten better entries the past 3 years. Yes Finland has had better results but Estonia has more momentum than Finland because they are on an upwards trajectory while Finland this year will decline.
@florenna
@florenna 6 ай бұрын
@@adamtideman4953 Well, that's your opinion, as UMK (even) this year is appreciated by most as very good overall quality, I haven't seen anyone calling it weak, while Eesti Laul is widely considered weak this year ;) And *especially* if thinking of a shorter timespan than the last 10 years, Finland has greater momentum, as per my example above of the last 3 years. I guess our definition of "momentum" is just quite different 😄
