To be fair, most players playing against a Federer this aggressive and playing this well would have been lucky to get 2-3 games in the whole match. The fact that Djokovic got 8 is a testament to his defensive skills also.

djokovic is very gracious in defeat...unlike his fans haha. In truth, djokovic is the most graceful out of all three in defeat, and the most genuine when praising his opponents. then his fans go and ruin it by punching down on his opponents in victory, and making excuse after excuse in defeat. It makes it so tough to pay the proper respect to the greatest tennis player of all time.

If you look at their career h2h record at arguably the 3 fastest courts they played each other on - Dubai, Cincy and Shanghai - Federer's record is 8-2 vs Novak (and this sample stretches into and across Novak's period of dominance). If the court speed favoured it, Federer's aggressive tennis tended to trump Novak's defense.

What's remarkable about Federer is he was a fast court player who grew up in the late 90s, was a serve and volleyer but adept enough to switch to the baseline when the game slowed down in the early 2000s. It was then going to be the decade of the grinders and the counter punchers where the Ferrer's and Murrays beat the Roddicks and Del Potros. Federer still stayed relevant for another decade of that while everyone else of his generation (Ferrero, Hewitt, Safin, Roddick) faded away by 2010.

Impressive h2h in those 3 tournaments. I remember Federer just punishing at Cincy and me being frustrated because I wanted Nole to win that missing Masters. In my mind, and what I've searched for, grass is still faster than those fast courts. Being Federer labeled as the greatest grass court player, it's interesting that Nole beat him in those 3 finals (recognizing, much earlier than Novak, that the 19 final was one that Federer should have won; I call it an error of the matrix). Tennis is such a complex game, many factors apply.

It's a pretty fast hardcourt. If you check Djokovic's record against Roger on the 3 fast hardcourt Masters - Dubai, Cincy, Shanghai - it wasn't very good. Too lazy to look it up but off the top of my head I think it was 2-1 in Dubai, 3-1 in Cincy and 2-0 in Shanghai in Roger's favor. A couple of those Cincy matches were also pretty aggressively brutal from Roger. Djokovic did much better against Roger on the slower hard courts - and since all the other hard courts were slowed to a crawl in 2008 or so...

It's the matches like this that convince me that prime Federer was better than prime Djokovic. When everything was clicking for Roger, his combination of power, precision, movement, and anticipating his opponent's next move was unbeatable. The difference between their careers is the longevity of Novak's prime extended well past Roger's because Novak's durability exceeds Roger's. There were times when Novak was absolutely dominant and unbeatable as well, don't get me wrong. I just think Roger playing at his highest level and potential would beat Novak at his highest level.

Ceiling for ceiling, I don't think there's much doubt, predominantly because of style of play and serve. We saw this as late as 2019. But Djokovic has the highest floor of any player I've seen, and Federer - whilst clearly mentally tough - wasn't on his level mentally and it cost him some huge matches that he should have won (US Open 2011 and Wimbledon 2019 being the biggest). I don't think he loses that '19 Wimbledon final to any other player from 40-15 on his serve. In fact, I don't think that match goes 5 sets against any other player. He just choked multiple times. I do think that a younger Federer never develops the mental hang ups, though.

Tennis, like all sports, is entertainment, and aggressive playstyles are very very entertaining. I don't know why people are always so shocked and offended that so many people like to cheer for a guy who executes points like this and prefer to root for him over other players regardless of all-time statistics. If numbers were really the only thing that mattered in sport, people would watch the scoreboard instead of the players. But they don't. Watching people dance around the playing field in magnificent ways and do extraordinary things right before your eyes is the entire point.

All I know is that even in an event where people are only competing against the clock instead of directly against their competitors, I will still have a much better time watching the race on the track than you will have staring at a spreadsheet of the results and ranking it. If Bolt is injured and not competing in a particular race and no one sets a world record that day, a track race will still be fun to watch as the competitors attempt to do feats that most humans cannot. That's sport. That's entertainment. People will still cheer even if no all-time lists on Wikipedia need to be updated. Do you think people who live in Boston should root for the Yankees because they have more championships than the Red Sox? Is Real Madrid the ONLY football club anyone in Europe should support? Liking someone, rooting for someone, cheering for their success and booing their rivals has never ever been about objectivity. And it won't be any time soon.

Roger also beat Novak in the ATP finals after the infamous 2019 Wimbledon. Federer probably would have another 6-8 slams to his name, if not for a primed Novak in the way every time. There's lots of arguments of who is the best, who has the most slams, most titles, win rate, etc. Federer plays for winners, where it takes skill, set-up and execution, using different angles and approaches. He's constantly thinking about how to end the point sooner, in his favor. Some times it backfires and your winner instead becomes an unforced error. Nadal and Djokovic have a more defensive approach, where they minimise errors first, and then pounce when they see an opening or their opponent makes a mistake. IMO, Federer's style of play may not have the most consistency, but it certainly is the most difficult to master and definitely the most fun to watch

Beautiful attacking tennis by Federer in this match, Djokovic did well to win a total of 8 games here and he really did have to dig quite deep in some of his service games in the 2nd set to hold on. Some of Federer's service games were done in under 1 minute, Nadull the slowpoke would need that much time between his 1st and 2nd serves lol

@@SuperNino111Roger in his 30s was dealing with Prime Djokovic, Nadal & Murray, and he still won 5 slams in 2010s decade amd made it to 11 slam finals, Meanwhile Djokovic is having a cakewalk beating hopeless nextgens like Ruud, Tsitsipas, Berretini, Medvedev, Kyrgios, etc in his 30s. With the kind of hopeless competition in the last 8 years except for Nadal at RG, Federer also would have racked up 10-12 slams easily, Djokovic is the ultimate weakest era champ & Federer will always be number 1.

Just goes to show how much better Federer was on fast courts. If we look at fast courts like Cincinnati, Dubai and Shanghai Federer has a healthy lead over Djokovic. Back in the 2000s when Grand Slams were fast Federer was dominating. US Open and Australian Open both slowed down significantly in late 2000s onwards and particularly early 2010s. Federer didn't become a lesser player in the 2010s it's just that he was getting out of his peak in his 30s while facing 2 younger GOATs who were in their peak in mid 20s at the same time courts slowed down significantly hurting his attacking game and benefiting the defensive/counter punching baseline defense of Djokovic and Nadal.

I thought 2017-2018 Wimbledon was the best Federer ever. He changed his racket to a bigger racket head which gave him more control and allowed more room for error in 2013. Even for the best player in the world that adjustment takes years. That’s why 2013-2016 were Roger’s worst years in production. He also knew that if he he didn’t make the change he wouldn’t have the longevity he so desperately wanted. The racket change is why he finished 6-1 (or 7-1) vs Rafa. With that being said unfortunately he Father Time was coming and he was coming fast. He caught up with Roger just a year later in 2019. But IMO pre 2017 this is the best match Roger Federer has ever played. Absolute perfection.
