It's a great idea to do this on fabric you tend to use more often than not. The exercise will be the same, you just have to make sure your test stitch is correct for the following:. differential feed, stitch length , the correct type and size of needles, presser foot pressure and of course the knife setting. It's easier to start with calico until you understand properly what each of the functions do. I think it's worth doing. Hopefully though, your machine is clean and oiled regularly so the dials won't be too far off factory settings :-)

Fantastic idea, the visual outcome is totally the best way for me to remember what tension I need. I'd also do this with different weights of fabrics just to see what they require at a glance.

I purchased a serger recently and it is still unopened in the Box. I don't know why I thought I needed one, but I have one just the same. Your videos are very thorough, informative, and not full of extra things we don't need. Much appreciated. I might just open that box after all and take some of your advice.

What a good idea! I suppose it would be different with different fabric so, it is a good idea if using a fabric I haven't sewn with before to test in this way? Or, would the tension be pretty much the same?

With every new fabric I’d always start with the default tension and go from there. I’m still a relative newbie after using my machine for just over a year and still struggle to work it all out sometimes even though I’ve been sewing for 37 years and even checking the books I have leaves me scratching my head sometimes, practice makes progress!

I test every fabric I sew or serge on the machine I’ll use to check the needles, thread, tension and pressure are correct. I don’t always make a tension chart. This is useful for everyone to make to learn about how each tension affects the stitch x

Hi, I am new to overlocking, and I only have white thread that came with my Brother 3043DWT machine. I would like to try this tension chart but not sure what brand of thread to purchase for my overlocker. Any suggestions would be helpful please. Amazon for example sell a thread for serging, embroidery and quilting by Ilauke which is a polyester thread. Would this be suitable as I can get 12 colours in a set. Thank you.

Hi Abie. Is the tension of 3 just for this test and all models or is this the preset tension for your make of machine. I’m having issues on a fleece material. I have my differential set to 2 which is the best to stop in stretching and wavering. First 2 - 3 inches looks perfect and then I start to get upper looper V’s randomly and then it goes curved and the left needle stitches skip. Any ideas why this is. I’m a bit of a novice and can never get it right on this machine except for cottons.
@AbisDen
@AbisDen Жыл бұрын
Hey! That sounds frustrating. Have a look at the needles. Some fleece needs stretch needles others do better with ballpoint. I’ve just released a new video on cleaning your machine. Take a look at that too. Good luck 🤞🏼

I taught many people who took a long time to understand. I tried lots of different ways to help them. One lady took three years before I saw the penny drop, her face lit up with a difference. Keep at it. Is it the tension that’s messing up? Sometimes the slots are too big and you have to take care and check thread slid between the discs.
