I love cover crops! Another no till termination method is to tarp for 3-4 weeks prior to planting.

I'm trying not to till anymore. I will try to manually cut them back to the ground with trimmers or a weed eater, and then cover with a tarp for a few weeks.

Thank you for mentioning legumes must be terminated to release the nitrogen. So many KZfaq gardeners don't seem to realize that.

Excellent video with a really good explanation of the options and methods for cover crops. Your video is especially good for raised bed gardeners who need to learn how to terminate their cover crops in raised beds. Thanks.

Two things. 1. To terminate winter Rye (not cereal) just make sure that it's cut below the soil line. It doesn't have to be very deep because we don't want to disturb the top inches of the soil too much but that should terminate it after a few cuts. Just do that for a few weeks before planting/sowing. In addition, you can also cover the area with a tarp or something to keep it in the dark after cutting. It's okay to plant in the roots. They will decay quickly and give what you sowed a nice trail for the new roots. Use a putty knife to cut your rows/holes with minimal disturbance. 2. I just learned (cannot remember where. Sorry) that the leaves/stems of each individual kind of vegetable provides the unique nutrition for growth of that same individual kind of plant. So this year I'm going to make a separate tea from each kind of plant. Maybe a little OCD but seems like a fun experiment and sort of confirmed by your leaf mold success.

Hi, thank you for information. I planted a cover of peas & Something Else (that I can't recall) I cut it down about 5 weeks ago but the Something Else is growing back. Should I pull the roots before tilling?

So if i want to harvest the wheatberries then that may not work for a cover crop?
@OklahomaGardening
@OklahomaGardening 10 ай бұрын
Traditionally you want to terminate cover crops before they begin to bloom. If you wanted to harvest the wheat you would want to wait until it has produced seed heads and dried. However, the remaining wheat stubble and residue is still a beneficial source of organic matter for your soil.

Tilling is bad for the soil structure.

Thank you for your informative video. I've heard that some of the grasses that I'd hoped to use (rye, oats) won't be killed by merely cutting, but will have to be tilled in. Is that your experience? I'm hoping to avoid tilling, but to find cover crops that can be terminated by mowing. Thank you!

From experience, annual rye can be mowed or trimmed a few times and will die especially as it gets warmer. It's not as good of an option for early spring or even mid-spring crops. You could either crimp it and tarp it to kill it or mow it early once every week and it should die. Cover crops methods are not as black and white as other plants but, unless you are surviving on your garden, you could try it. If you are using your garden for food security, just try it on part or wait to plant or transplant until May or June.

@@YIO777 Is annual rye the same as winter rye? Also, I was thinking about mowing mine a couple of times and then laying cardboard over top. Maybe put some compost under the cardboard. It’s my first year doing this. I’m really trying not to till. But if I can’t kill it, I will till it.
@YIO777
@YIO777 Жыл бұрын
@@dianak726 It seems like winter rye is annual rye that is grown in the winter. Rye is a cereal grain and ryegrass is a perennial grass. If you grew and annual/winter rye, then you should be able to mow it a few times. Scalp it absolutely as low as you safely can. Do that once a week for a few weeks amd composting and cardboarding should keep it from coming back. Depending on how big your area is and how densely you've planted, you should turn over the top few inches as to not ruin all the good soil structure. Worms and little critters will restructure everything under your layers throughout the season.

@@dianak726 to assure you, you could probably get away without tilling or digging any of the roots since it'll be smothered

@@YIO777 Ok great! Thank you so much. I did two rows of it where I will plant tomatoes this year. I just wanted to experiment a little. I’m seeing very conflicting information. I want to do it the right way but I’m certainly not above tilling. I feel there is a place for that especially in the first couple of years. Thanks again! I’ll try to do it the correct way first.

So then, I cut my cover crop and leave it in the bed fo a couple of months so breaks down and then I put my starter plants in. Right? Thank you!
@YIO777

You don't have to wait, but you can give it a couple of weeks and given sufficient mass, it should act as a decent mulch in which to plant seeds or transplants. Not everything is easy to direct seed into deep mulch, so transplants work better. You can always clear a spot and remulch using the cover crop residue.

Will running chickens through help terminate the cover crops?

Running chickens through can help terminate the cover crop, but it highly depends on the cover crop and if the chickens are able to graze enough to terminate it fully.
