During the struggle for its independence from the French, Algeria gained powerful allies, such as the Soviet Union, so it should not be surprising that the Algerian army has been equipped primarily with Soviet military equipment from the 1960s onward. These included a substantial number of armored vehicles and tanks. Some of the hardware delivered in this era has remained in service and is seemingly well-appreciated even up to this day, most notably the T-55. This could not be said for the later T-62, which was supplied in the late 1970s. Due to a troublesome history, it was largely overshadowed by the tanks that came before and after it. However, in recent years, attempts were made after decades in service to finally improve the combat effectiveness of the aging T-62 by upgrading it with the Russian Berezhok turret.

This makes a lot of sense, you have T-90s and T-72s as your primary MBTs, using the T-62s with this upgrade gives you a decent IFV or fire support vehicle with potent anti tank capability of Kornet missiles. The 30mm auto cannon and grenade launcher is good for anti infantry and soft skin targets
@brokeandtired
@brokeandtired 2 ай бұрын
Fire support doesn't need more than a 100mm gun. The T-55's are basically being used as a direct fire, anti infantry strongpoint bunker cracker. The tank work is for the newer 125mm T tanks....the T-62 are just reserve armour.....because 100mm ammo is dirt cheap compared to 115mm.

A big advantage for the T-54/55 and T-62, is that if it's firing from a fixed position, extra rounds can be stored outside near the tank and can be easily handed through the hatches as it is single piece ammunition.

The Berezhok is an upgraded version of the BMP-2 turret that retains the 30 mm 2A42 autocannon and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, while adding a 30 mm AGS-30 automatic grenade launcher and four Kornet anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) mounted in two launchers on either side of the turret, as well as a new fire-control system.

Turning the T-62 from an antique tank to a robust IFV/fire support vehicle. Quite a good trade off, one that isn't too expensive either, especially compared to the alternative of buying a completely new vehicle and having to train on that.

Protection beyond 30mm autocannon and 40mm HE is probably not cost effective these days considering tank on tank battles are very unlikely and when you will need expensive laminate/ceramic armour coupled with ERA just to have a 10% survival possibility against RPGs and ATGMs. May as well protect the armour assets actively with tactics, recon and force protection against RPGs and ATGMs whilst ensuring survivability against cannon, shrapnel, light HE and small arms during assault support.

Better armor on the turret would make this a more serious IFV that could go against a Bradley, Striker or other common vehicles out there. I guess one difference with the Bradley is that it can't carry infantry troops. In any case, although with gaps, the armor of a tank on an IFV, and it's respectable armament would still make this a serious threat in modern warfare.

@theognistyheros

@@ptonpc As I remember, in Africa there are lack of modern afv (mostly south africa and maybe Egypt and Moroco) and if there is one, BMPT-62 would be still better, especially that Algerian can put ERA and addon armor. And even the turret can be reused as I watched one time as some army or militia build one selfproppeled gun reusing T-55 turret. Even some Ukrainians considered this upgrade as viable and made on BMPT-62 with custom bmp-2 turret

Exactly, someone gets it. Instead of letting the old tanks sit around and collect dust, they found a way to create a new IFV to supplement their army. Something that their crews already have experience with, meaning they don't have to spend more money on training, as well as avoiding logistical issues by having a totally new vehicle. Quite a smart move, especially if they decide to sell these. I would imagine these might be pretty popular.

Allegedly Algeria ordered 300 BMPT-72 Terminators from Russia in 2016 but possibly as few as 13 or as many as 120 were actually delivered. None were seen publicly until 2022 when at least 4 participated in the Independence Day parade. I suspect the real number is closer to 13 than 120 and claims of 300 are pure fiction. The actual number of their own local T-62 conversions seems to be 20. A total of 12 were shown in the same parade where the BMPT-72's debuted. The good thing about changing the whole turret is that the bmp's is way lighter than the t62's , then the vehicle will be considerably lighter with the same horsepower engine. In the end we have a more agile t62 with a bmp turret compared with one with just the gun and the same turret.

ETA: T62 most definitely has an auto eject system that returns the gun to level and ejects the spent case out a small hatch in the back of the turret. Watch the video Ian did with Chieftain on it. It's not as gizmo as the full autoloader but it's still a complication over the T55.

I think the T62 was basically a stop gap design possibly due to the long development time of the T64. Its just a lengthened T55 hull, a new engine and gun and turret.

More likely the T-62 was issued to Tank Regiments where its replacement by T-72 and T-90 was long-planned, thus no need to spend money on upgrades. T-55 is issued to infantry units as essentially a close support vehicle and not for armored maneuver warfare. Entirely adequate for that and with no replacement plans in the near-term so they get mods.

The T-62 was built for the Warsaw Pact as a cheap tank easy to build in large numbers. To do that the tank is very poorly designed and does not last long in combat even with older Western tanks. On the Golan Heights 1973, hundreds were destroyed by 1948 era IDF Centurion tanks.

Well, no. The T-62 is more expensive in cost and maintenance compared to the T-55. It never replaced the T-55 as their main tank, even as a reserve tank role within members of Warsaw Pact Nations. Nor did it really take over past the T-55 in the export market at the time. The only Pact member that operates the T-62 in mass scale is Bulgaria, but most of them are modified as Armour Recovery Vehicles while others have been sold off or withdrawn from service.

The main reason the T-62 was built is because the Soviets needed an immediate counter to newer NATO tanks like the M60 in the 60s and to move from using a Rifle Gun to a Smoothbore Gun.

@@randomka-52alligatorthatis34 Was it not the replacement for the T-55. The T-62 being the export variant and T-64 for Soviet army? The T-62 was a good idea, but the ammo and gun control were poor, very lucky to hit anything over 800 meters. They also easily burned due to the auto-loader carousel, a fault carried over to T-72, T-80 and T-90.

@@billballbuster7186 No, not really. Both the T-55 and T-62 were the most common tanks in Service with the Soviet Union(not the Warsaw Pact) around the same time, till the 70s and 80s where both slowly began to be replaced by more modern Soviet MBTs and moved to reserve service.

Still do not see the point of this type of vehicle. I guess it makes some level of sense for those countries - usually with armies of short-term conscripts - who just can't get their shit together when it comes to tank-infantry coordination, but I still have not seen a doctrine for use or even a TO&E for them. Once you stop drooling over all the shiny things and zip up, you realize this particular abomination is just a BMP-2M with better (but still inadequate) hull armor and no dismounts. The turrets would have been put to better use on BMP's.

Its meant to conduct direct fire support for mechanized units in a frontal role just like the bmpt terminator Mechanized units required vehicles with a fire rate high enough to supress the ennemy on an assault this led to the purchase of this type of vehicle They are meant to face dug in infantry equipped at worse with light rocket launchers and some soft skin vehicles Still the bmp did not have enough armor to do this task, and is now only being used from defensive positions This tank and the bmpt are not meant to be ifvs nor tanks or tank escorts but just afv's conducting direct fire support missions for mechanized units in positions too dangerous for ifv's We can conclude all that from their assignment too mechanized divisions and their use in military exercises available on KZfaq

@@NotSovietAtall - I know all that. Does not address my points at all. There is no actual doctrine for use and no one has worked out a table of organization (which is why at least in part the Russians seem to have given up on the concept). @@NotSovietAtall - Terminators have seen combat in Ukraine, preceded with much hype but with little to show for it in reality. Again, no one seems to have worked out a doctrine for employment or tables for their use. I realize the concept has its fanboys because _lots of guns and missiles make happy in pants_ but the substance is lacking. And you are doing nothing to move the needle on that. The concept is again, a band-aid and not well or completely thought out, intended to address the problem of _our conscripts fresh out of 45-day basic don't want to advance or get out of their BMP's_ There is a reason why there is zero interest in such vehicles in professional armies.

@MFitz12
@MFitz12 2 ай бұрын
Not really. Longer and wider hull, different suspension, more powerful engine, completely different turret. The gun was designed to deal with M103 and Conqueror, giving no regard to the L7, which it handily out performed. In the process the T-62's gun made the monolithic armor of M60 and even Chieftain obsolete. T-62 was as natural an evolution from T-55 as M60 was from M48 or Chieftain was from Centurion. What really hurt T-62 from becoming more common and popular was the arrival of T-64 and then T-72 not long after T-62and more importantly, the development of improved sabot ammunition for the 100mm gun that was _good enough_ (could deal with M60 and Chieftain) making much of the rationale for T-62 redundant.
