Man, they really nailed the casting for the T-1000. That particular scene was the scariest for me as a kid. It's chilling the way he made a b-line for John, just immediate and full-boar, like a cat once it commits to chasing the laser pointer.

Linda Hamilton is awesome in this. She gets a lot of credit for the physical changes she made, but the best part of her appearance here for me is when she was about to kill Dyson and broke down. In that moment she realizes she became what she feared the most. She became a terminator, somone willing to kill to change the future. It's a great moment.

@domplywood3247
@domplywood3247 Жыл бұрын
It's also her sister in the scene where they take the chip out of the T800 (Arnold's) head to flip the switch. There is no mirror, Linda's twin sister Leslie plays her reflection and copies her movements, a clever way to avoid having to hide cameras etc in the edit. Leslie is seen again as the T1000 version of Sarah Connor in the steelworks at the end. Some of those parts are short or missing in the theatrical cut, but the extended has them and both look great even when you know :)

The thing about the first film is that you need to see how Sara Conner is at first an innocent young woman not knowing anything outside of her normal life with her roommate, not believing this at first, having to be convinced it is really happening and coming to the realization that she had to go and learn about what she needs to do to become the woman who raises John Conner to be this great leader. Without the back story you would never understand where she came from and what it took to get her prepared to come up against this

Thank you EOM for being one of the very very very few reactors that noticed that Arnold did not kill anyone who attacked him at the bar, and how that indicates he is the good guy. SO many people just do not even notice that, and are so surprised later on when Arnold turns out to be the good guy. 💯✌
@blytheguy7510
@blytheguy7510 Жыл бұрын
I think the main reason he didn't kill anyone in the bar is because there was too many people there. Even a Terminator knows that would bring too much attention to him. In the first movie he walked up on 3 punks alone so there was no issue of killing them.
@brei2670
@brei2670 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think they actually messed that part up. While I understand that the goal was to make the character a good guy (and he didn't kill anyone throughout the movie), it kinda ruined the reveal in that corridor. They even gave him a cool soundtrack for the bar scene... I wouldn't have minded if he killed someone early on, especially some bad guys who attacked him. Would have had me guessing longer.

That actually IS Linda Hamilton from the first Terminator. She got buff AF for this role, she was in fact doing those pullups on the bed. And the lockpicking she does, she actually taught herself when she read the script. Linda Hamilton is a bad ass. And the T800 not shooting the guys in the bar and then almost shooting the body builder - only thing I can imagine is that it was John in danger and not the Terminator.

"Hasta la vista, baby." Fun Fact: Linda Hamilton's twin sister, Leslie Hamilton Gearren, was used as a double in scenes involving two "Sarah Connors" (for example, when the T-1000 was imitating her). Identical twins Don Stanton and Dan Stanton played the hospital security guard and the T-1000. No Camera Tricks Fact: Robert Patrick undertook a rigorous running regime and practiced breathing only through his nose, in order to appear to be a cyborg that could run at high speeds without showing fatigue. He had trained so hard that he was able to catch up to Edward Furlong on his dirt bike with ease. Stripper Night Fact: A female passer-by wandered onto the biker bar set thinking it was real, despite walking past all the location trucks, cameras, and lights. Seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger standing in the bar dressed only in boxer shorts, she finally asked what was going on, only for Schwarzenegger to reply that it was male stripper night. Nuclear Nightmare Fact: Special effects guru Stan Winston and his crew studied hours of nuclear test footage in order to make Sarah Connor's "nuclear nightmare" scene look as realistic as possible. A miniature Los Angeles was made to simulate the scene. Some of the materials used in the miniature that mimicked all the destroyed masonry were Matzos crackers and Shredded Wheat. After each take, it would take on average two days to set the model up to shoot again. In late 1991, members of several US federal nuclear testing labs unofficially declared it "the most accurate depiction of a nuclear blast ever created" for a fictional movie. The special effects team members have stated several times that no scene they've worked on since has received an equivalent amount of praise or emotional feedback from viewers.

This was great in the theater back when it came out. That level of CGI was still fairly new, and even the parts that were a not so great was better than most of what had come before. The T-1000 walking through the bars and that reversal near really got a reaction. It was also funny to think that that shrink would be checking in to the facility after having his mind blown like that. Halon is a fire suppression agent. It displaces the oxygen in the air so the fire can't burn, or something like that. It will kill you if you breath much of it.

@@SteelJM1 Right. They understood the limitations of CGI at the time, so they only used it for certain things. Even then you could tell where they cut corners a bit and put more effort into the bigger scenes. Practical effects were indeed used whenever possible. One interesting detail. The first one went to 1984 to delete her and the other went to 1995 to delete her son. Both were sent at the same time. A lot of people, including me, misheard her and thought she say that Skynet sent two terminators back in time to delete John. No, John Connor send Kyle Reese back to 1984, and then they send this reprogrammed T-800 back to 1995 before (like what Reese said in the police station in T1) leveled time displacement complex.

Today I feel we are very jaded when it comes to special effects. I don't think you mentioned it, but you might have recognized John Connor/Edward Furlong from American History X. He looks different with hair but his face is quite characteristic. You're completely right about how it was unnecessary to make any more movies after this, but no way a movie as successful as this one wouldn't have sequels. Unfortunately none of the subsequent movies are anywhere close to T2 in quality and of course you will compare them to T2, so it's a setup for disappointment. T3 is basically "what if there was a sexy female terminator" and it's as dumb as it sounds.

I was a teenager when this came out and since both of my parents loved the first one, we saw this at the theater on opening night. The movie was fantastic, more than we had expected, but what I remember most clearly is the silence of the crowd coming out of that theater. Everyone was just blown away by the special effects. In 1991, they were unlike anything we'd seen before and it was stunning on the big screen.

I totally agree with your assessment on the ending. They just wanted to milk it after that. They should've left it alone with this high note. If you're gonna watch another one just do T3. But please don't ruin it for yourself and watch further than that. Tbh, watching T3 kinda ruins it, in and of itself.

Arnold had alot more opportunity to act in this sequel than the first movie and it made the film so much better. You hit the nail on the head about it being a perfect ending and not needing to go any further. Cameron pretty much felt the same way and the franchise goes out of his hands beyond this point. Money is the only reason why the 3rd movie exists, and things just go downhill from there. T3 does have a few good action scenes but the rest of it is pretty forgettable.

24:28 People really used to keep their keys like that. This movie preceded a major uptick in carjackings that may have been induced by this movie pointing out that people leave their keys in their cars, so people began to take their keys more seriously, so parked cars were harder to steal. This is also done four years later in *Independence Day* when Vivica A. Fox confiscated the big truck after the city was destroyed. I can't think of any movies that did it after that.

The twins from Good Morning Vietnam were both in the movie, with one playing the guard and the other as the T-1000 transformed into him. Also, James Cameron knew exactly what he was doing when he made the T-1000's base human form a cop.

ALSO - In the first Terminator - One of the first few punks that got killed in the beginning of the movie was Bill Paxton - AKA "Private First Class - HUDSON" also from Aliens ;) James Cameron loves to use his regular Actors ! fun fact, arnie didn't have to learn any of his lines, when he was in a driving scene, as you notice the wind shield isn't ever shown, that's because arny literally convinced the director for him to tape his lines to the wind shield so that he would just read it, & have this more robotic sounding voice.

28:20 Me and my friends at school were all 10 years old when we saw this in 1991. No movies before this really depicted what a nuclear explosion would do to a city. All we knew was the mushroom cloud pictures from the history books, we 'heard' about shock waves, but the word didn't really mean anything until we saw this scene. Cameron left out landmarks being destroyed so that viewers could picture it being the downtown area of their city.
