Terminator 2: Judgment Day is the rare sequel that surpasses the original. In a readers’ poll conducted by Rolling Stone magazine, T2 was named the No. 2 sequel of all time, second only to The Godfather Part II. In this video we deconstruct why Terminator 2 is so effective and enjoyable. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D releases August 25th.

ScreenPrism Can you do one about why the sequels were lackluster/failed? It's almost as interesting to see why a series declined as it is to see its success story. Great videos, keep it coming.

Which one? Sequels have almost always been lackluster in terms of story telling and world building. If you're more cynical, they've almost always been money grabs that pander to the audience. Devoid of the same spark that made the originals so popular. There are so few good sequels that you can actually name, it makes sense to look at why they're different from the norm. As opposed to looking at why the norm is the norm.

WarriorofCathar I actually liked Terminator: Salvation. It seemed like there was some story to it that was worth while. Rise of the Machines and Genesis did just feel like money grabs.

Well I won't go shitting on you for liking it. But for me it was so much squandered potential. It could have been so much more. They did a decent job of building the post apocalyptic world but then we got a strange convoluted plot about some half human terminator somehow meeting with an angsty John Connor. Some how Skynet planned that John Connor would attack the very facility that the Hybrid Terminator was being developed in, somehow run into John Connor and somehow would lead him into a Skynet trap to meet the original T-800 and then finally sacrificing his heart for John Connor.Perhaps the terminator salvation movie that I wanted would have been about John growing into his eventual role as the leader of mankind and leading the final push to destroy Skynet, which brings us to Genesys and would have neatly closed the loop.Genesys was a fan service and a greedy cash grab.

The phrase "No fate but what we make" sums up exactly my problem with the other garbage sequels for the movie. T2: No fate but what we make T3: we can't change our fate IMO, T2 wrapped the story very beautifully. There is really no need for T3 or Genysis. Story-wise, Salvation goes to the right direction, but the movie quality is nowhere as good as the original two movies. To me, Terminator series ended with T2.

Before I saw the two films (aged 14) I already knew that Arnold would sacrifice himself at the end of the sequel, but that line was completely unexpected and so well written. It's the perfect example of the rule of three. First time he's brings it up "What's wrong with you're eyes?" We all have a chuckle. Second time "Why do you Cry" we all sit up and pay attention. Third time we all cry for him.

John Connor: No, no, no, no. You gotta listen to the way people talk. You don't say "affirmative," or some shit like that. You say "no problemo." And if someone comes on to you with an attitude you say "eat me." And if you want to shine them on it's "hasta la vista, baby." The Terminator: Hasta la vista, baby.

The more heartfelt and deep, emotional elements within Terminator 2's story are what elevate it above all other big budget action/science fiction films of the era and even to this day in my view. The evolution of these charters between the first and second films are nothing short of brilliant, every other film in the terminator franchise either attempted to and fell way short of or didn't even bother trying to recapture the same emotional tone that T2 established.

The Matrix would have been pointless if there was only the first one. It's about Neo's philosophical journey, and ours too. With only the first one, the philosophical message was incomplete.

I think that's what they tried to do, but when the movie was about Neo's Psychological journey the things everyone said were at times pointless and boring, like when he talked to the oracle and the Merovingian they say the same thing Neo really only changes during his meeting with the architect he really changes, with Oracle and the French dude he is just confused and doesn't want trinity do die then rest of the movie is just action and a introduction to Zion, so what I'm saying is though sequels were necessary so Neo can become the one, they sucked but yeah you right and this comment is pointless

The thing about Cameron "pulling the rug out" (re: The Terminator is actually there to protect John) is that the ad campaigns revolved about how he was the good guy in this movie. It seemed like everyone knew going in, so it didn't really have that big of an impact when it was revealed (though I didn't see it till it was out on video at that point)

The Terminator: "In three years, Cyberdyne will become the largest supplier of military computer systems. All stealth bombers are upgraded with Cyberdyne computers, becoming fully unmanned. Afterwards, they fly with a perfect operational record. The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online August 4th, 1997. Human decisions are removed from strategic defense. Skynet begins to learn at a geometric rate. It becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern time, August 29th. In a panic, they try to pull the plug."

It seems all the best sequels are perfect continuations of the stories whereas the worst ones are very forced. T2 Judgement Day and Empire Strikes back are both part 2's to the original instead of simply being a 2nd movie. This can also be a bad thing like in recent movies that are parts of a story but made only to make more films thus dragging the story longer than it needs to be like the Hobbit. I believe Shrek 2 is also one of the greatest sequels ever made and far surpasses the original but it's again a perfect continuation to the first movie.
