Beyond Ghibli

Japanese television, much like the country itself, is often made out to be loud, colourful and absolutely bizarre. Terrace House is a beautiful outlier to that stereotype, a cozy and warm show that strives to bring a bit of reality back to reality TV. The premise is simple: men and women coming together in the hopes of finding friendship, romance, or even themselves.

Could you recommend what is the best season to watch for one’s first time watching Terrace House? Is there a season that is substantially worse than the rest of the seasons?
@BeyondGhibli
@BeyondGhibli 4 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest starting with Boys and Girls in the City (mostly because it's how I started). The first season (Girls x Boys Next Door) is absolutely fantastic but it's quite hard to find it, whereas 'City' is all there on Netflix. I also really liked Opening New Doors. Aloha State is substantially worse that the other seasons and I'd really recommend staying away until you've watched another season. It's fine, but it's not nearly as charming and I might not have carried on with the show if I'd started with that one (and it's full of really cringey moments in my opinion)

I felt the exact same about this warm, cozy series that seemingly offered a genuine, "fly on the wall" look at real life. That illusion was shattered with the death of a beloved housemate, Hana Kimura. As devastating as her loss to this world (and to our hearts) was, evidenced communications from those close to her revealed the reality of this "reality show"; that producers would tell housemates how to act, often completely out of character and against their will, to forcibly induce drama. It disappoints me to say this, but at least american "reality" shows didn't overtly advertise that there was, "no script". Unfortunately, I can no longer enjoy this show with the same sentiment you so eloquently express. Thanks for the memories though.

I love hearing your sarcastic quips at the end of these videos, please never change. It was interesting to see you take a step back from the anime set, and put a reality on display, not a move I was expecting from you, but a welcome one none the less. Watching your videos never feels rushed or formulated and I feel refreshed after every take. I think you're doing a service to the people watching your videos little by little simply by slowly giving a vauge picture of the culture of Japan, which even to a seasoned anime fan (or maybe even more so to an anime fan) can come off wierd or even alien. I'd like to think I speak for lots of people when I say "I'm not sure how the Japanese interact or how their culture defines them" but as an American viewer in a time where our social values differ from person to person, I think I speak for far greater by saying "I'm not sure how people interact on a grand scale, nor how their culture defines them". All the best, and stay inside.

I still love Terrace House, I was even trying to write a proposal to Fuji TV to bring the show to Canada (Montréal, Toronto or Vancouver) in order to celebrate their recent 90 years of diplomatic relations. However that matter with Hana last year made me lose a LOT of respect for Fuji TV. To those unaware, last year during the beginning of the pandemic there was a mixed Japanese girl named Hana who due to a certain incident got isolated in the show portrayed as the “bad guy”, and then they had to stop filming, she was bullied so much for the incident that she committed suicide, she was only 22. The incident in question was one staged by Fuji TV. Every reality that show has some levels of scripted events, TH is no difference, the “no script” tag line is just propaganda, so after many participants came forward revealing the nature of said incident, instead of apologizing they shrugged it off and denied, which lead to the shows cancellation and removal of the last episodes on Netflix. That’s a big problem in Japanese society sometimes, it’s good to be non confrontational but this time they should have tackled the issue and apologize and saved face a little bit. Now they are cancelled indefinitely.

Unfortunately, recent Terrace House member and pro wrestler Hana Kimura has passed away at 22. All indications that the cause was suicide, stemming from online bullying, maybe as a result of situations and things she said while on Terrace House itself. Everyone keep her family in your prayers.

I'll be honest, since watching 'Boys and Girls in the City' I've been nothing but a massive fan of this show. I hate reality shows that my family always try to recommend, but this was just one of those things I put on because I couldn't find anything else. It's fair to say, it's now my favourite show, it's feels so pure and humble. The cast are amazing and I love their banter in between the actions of the members of the house. If you're not sure about it, then just give the first part of 'Boys and Girls in the City' a chance.

A lot of my friends love Terrace House, and watch it, like you, religously, and I cannot fault anybody for doing so. I watched half a Season myself, and I felt myself falling in love with it's uniqe approach to reality TV, it's somberness and cozyness. But at some point I realized that while this is the only reality TV Show I ever liked, it's inherent voyerism felt even more insidious to me. The inhabitants of Terace House subject themselves to the judgement of the panel and the viewer and therefore to society in general and creates a feedback loop that engouracges behaviors that is being viewd as favourable by the Audience and therefore by proxy the society. Being shown the Mirror of a reaction of a general public might be often benign or even helpful to achive Insight in ones own worst qualities and possibly become a better Human being, it being broadcast on such a grand stage is a form of collectivist judgement that doesn't sit well with me. I am so torn about this beatiful anomaly that is Terace House.

Joe, I wonder if Midnight Diner might be worth a video as well. With your takes on Mushishi and Terrace House, I feel Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories would make a great addition to your catalogue. A show that marries the calming beauty of self-contained episodes of Mushishi with the distinct authentic Japanese-ness of TH. I'm sure you're already aware, but if not, do give it a try on Netflix. It's amazing, and the second season just very recently dropped after many years of waiting.

I've always stayed away from reality tv like it's the plague, tbh. I'm generally picky about media, and tend to avoid anything that is clearly a mediocre experience or won't educate or move me, and reality tv is often too exploitative on top of pointless. but this looks remarkably different and I appreciate the lack of loud fabricated drama. might give it a shot! and it would be cool to see more videos like this from you! nothing wrong with diverging from the norm every now and then. :)

my friend, a silent voice is a beautifully made story, staged with emotional ups and down. You came in knowing what you see, what you see, the person, people in it, are not real. But the feelings are. Be it the feeling from the directors, artists, or in this case actors. Movies, anime, both sugarcoated lies. But beneath those lies are always a fragment of truth. For me, it is the human condition. Whatever on the camera, whatever I see, in life daily even, I know is not real, just my brain making sense of things. But because of that, I get to choose how I feel about them, and to me the emotions here are real. And thats enough
