I remember seeing the commercial of this game on TV. Then I read about Terranigma in Nintendo Power, with a little comic they did. I was so fascinated. I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. I asked my parents to buy it for me. I had to score a good grade to get the game and managed to do so. The next day, I went to toy's r us with my mum. It was one of these big RPG SNES boxes with the manual and everything. This game is my childhood. My friends and me all played this game and then talked about it next day in school for months. We drew pictures of the things in the game, went out in the woods and to an old castle ruin to act like we're in the game, with wooden weapons my grandfather made for us. Terranigma really influenced me in so many ways is part of my nicest childhood memories and will always be my favorite game of all time.

Here in Germany, Terranigma has a solid fanbase. Terranigma, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore are my favorit games. Interesting: Japan got Terranigma and Chrono Trigger but no Evermore USA got Chrono Trigger and Evermore but no Terranigma and Europe got Terranigma and Evermore but no Chrono Trigger Life isn`t fair.

Terranigma had a huge impact on me and my brother when we were kids, still to this day a true profound masterpiece. It really gives me joy to hear that we weren't the only ones to truly appreciate this for what it is. I remember as a kid when I found this single SNES cartridge hidden away in the back on a dusty shelf in a tiny shop in a nearby village in 1999, i have never seen this game being sold anywhere else in Denmark, it was completely unknown but for some reason I spent my birthday money on it, best purchase I ever did, kinda epic thinking back on this

Not only is Terranigma one of my favourite SNES games but probably my favourite game of all. If I could play / replay only one more game before I die, this would be it!

I played through the Soulblazer and Illusion of Gaia last summer before starting on Terranigma. Needless to say, I was absolutely floored by the story and overall presentation. The experience had stayed in my head for months after finishing it. At the start of last fall, I suddenly lost my Grandfather and then a dear friend of mine a few months after. Those sudden experiences of loss and trying to rebuild life after are perfectly encompassed within Terranigma and I now hold it closer to my heart than I ever did before. I'd say it's by far the most moving Video Game I've ever played, and would highly suggest it to anyone looking for an amazing story (Something happens 3/4 of the way through out of left field that blew my mind), a soundtrack that creates a whirlwind of emotions and one of the most beautiful presentations one could see. I can truthfully say it's now dethroned FF VI as my favorite video game of all time. Thanks for video, and would love to see reviews of the two previous entries in the "Trilogy".

Living in Sweden, we bought this in 1997/1998 and boy... this is according to me the best SNES game, if not the best game I have ever played. Growing up with it, I also have a nostalgic connection with the game. I sincerely appreciate all the people, and this channel, for recognizing this game now, 20 years after its initial release. The citations from the developers are terrific, you would never know how much warmth fills me about hearing how much heart they actually put into the game. It is truly a hidden gem in every way. I would love a modern adaptation for it.. if possible. Probably played it 10 times or more since acquiring it. The recent years with emulators but heck, the experience is there. But it feels nice to actually have the cartridge of the game in my middle aged parents attic. Me and 2 of my brothers who have played it, always recall the most infuriating part though - "Leim's test"... *shivers*

The overworld and underworld themes make me sad and nostalgic for something inexplicable.

When I was a teenager, I was hyped for any rpg coming to Germany. Hits like Chrono Trigger, any Final Fantasy, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG didn't came out in the EU. I saved up for Lufia 2, as I was waiting long time for the release of it. One day I was going to the shop on release day and it wasn't there. Frustrated with the situation, I just brought randomly a game that popped up… and guess what, it was Terranigma! Never saw that before and it was an RPG. Yeah, turned out to be one of my best purchases ever, if not the best random purchase. So much memory, what a great game.

I found this back in the early 2000's in college and learning about morality and logic. I remember playing this game and thinking 'Crap! What is the right choice? Which should I pick? They both have validity, but which does the game WANT me to choose?' In the end, I had to ask myself what I thought was the right choice. Me. Not the developers, not a company. Me. I was so invested in this game and it really made me think more about choices and consequences. Technological progress and the conservation of nature. In some small way, Ark likely helped me become a biology instructor. I have always had a soft spot for this series including Soulblazer and Illusion of Gaia. Wonderful titles that shined a light the impact we humans have on the world around us. Thanks for the excellent review.

It was nice to hear another person (and much more down here in the comments) enjoyed this game as much as I did/do (I'm playing through it again right now, just made it to Chapter 3). The soundtrack is beautiful, the story is, as you put it, masterful and bittersweet, and the writing is just plain genius. Personally, I more often replay the Quintet games then the Final Fantasy series. The Quintet games always felt more of a personal journey in contrast to the bombastic epics in most of the Final Fantasy series.

One of my favorite RPG'S on the SNES. I imported the game and bought a converter to play PAL games, unfortunately it wouldn't allow me to save. One morning I woke up, it was supposed to rain all day, sat my ass on my couch and played from 6am until I beat it around 10pm. Probably the best 16 hours of gaming. Would love to have the SoulBlazer/Quintent trilogy release on the Switch.

I emulated this game back in my teen years, and it stuck with me that entire time, I was never able to forget it and I compared so many things to it. I love this game, and I don't play it enough, but almost like a good book, it just doesn't feel the same when I know what is coming.

Having played Terranigma as a 90‘s child :) You are absolutely correct.

I still got the original Terranigma game from my youth, my father bought the game in 1996 from "Intertoys" its a dutch shop for toys and games, here in Amsterdam the game has a big fanbase, a lot of people played this game as a kid. I still own my original game from my youth. I got so much nostalgia with this game, i am 33 years old and believe it or not, may sound a lil bit weird, i sometimes take the game with me next to bed and look at it for hours. I have such a bond with this game, the love is unconditional.

Excellent video on my favorite game developer of all time! I always wondered what caused them to split up, and totally agree that it's a shame we didn't get to see the other masterpieces they almost certainly would have gone on to create. (Terranigma SPOILERS ahead) The whole idea of the duality between the development of human civilization and its trade-offs with the natural world actually stood out to me as one of the most impactful themes of the game. The moment I remember most from my playthrough is going back to the flower grove after restoring the animals, and the flowers would not talk to me anymore. And then the same thing happened with most of the animals after I restored the humans. Their dialogue was replaced with a "........................", as if by moving on to the next phase of the world, I was no longer connected enough to them to understand them. I was surprised at the sense of loss I felt at that, like a microcosm of the feeling of loss you get after a relationship with a close friend or significant other suddenly goes downhill, and you know it was at least partially your fault.

Stumbled over this video just now. Really takes me back. I owned the original copy of the game and still have it in my cupboard till this day. I have so many fond memories... I should dust off the old SNES or at least boot up an emulator or my modded SNES Mini and give it my seventh playthrough.

Im playing through it now for the first time. Currently getting ready to fight dark gaia. I played through soul blazer and illusion of gaia as a child. Both those games have been burned into my mind to this day. Terranigma ia definitely one of the best games I've ever played. A real emotional rollercoaster, especially the scene with the goat and her husband. Shed a tear for that scene.

After my first playthrough I looked up a guide and did a second run to develop all the town to max; it was so satisfying to see a small village develop over time thanks to my help and the villagers’ efforts.

As a kid, I inherited my NES and SNES from my older siblings (and mother) and one of the games was Illusion of Gaia, which still has such a dear place in my heart, eventually I found Terranigma and it too, if nothing else but association with Illusion of Gaia, is such a special RPG for me.

I'm very surprised and also glad that you brought up this game. This game truly deserves more acknowledgement. If more people played it, then they would agree with us as well. When you beat this game, it gives you a great feeling of resonance in you for a long time. It actually has been quite a while since I beat the game but I still remember the feeling even today. I may not remember the details of the game; however, I clearly remember the feeling I felt after beating the game which I cannot describe. It's not quite important that this game is in my top 5 games of all time but what makes this game special is that it gave me feelings which no other game could give.

AMAZING video, Terranigma is the absolute definition of "underrated game", it is in fact a Masterpiece its such a joy to play, its a rollercoaster of emotions ending in a bittersweet ending. I discovered this game thanks to emulation, and it is easily and will probably be on my top 10 games list of all time, thats how good it is, everything from the pixel art, the music, the story, the concepts, the pacing, everything. More people should experience this gem, me personally I have a strong emotional attachment to it and i think that what they were aiming for, and it did.

Hands down the best ARPG on SNES, is a shame if you owned a SNES and never played it.

I didnt have a snes growing up, I got a Sega instead... so when the 2000s rolled around and I discovered the magic of emulation, I went back to the SNES and played them all, FF3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Act Raiser, 7th saga, Mario RPG, Illusion of Gaia, Lufia, you name it. But nothing, not one of them stuck with me even remotely as much as Terranigma did. Back at that time, I didnt even know it never came out in the US. Man... what a loss for the gaming world Though given all those strange remakes on the Switch lately... even one by quintet... the hope lives on

Thank you Illusion of Gaia has been my favorite game since it came out, and I still have my tshirt that came with it's preorder, I didn't play Terranigma until later in life because it was harder to get hold of, but I totally agree it's Quintets opus

Awesome video as usual, theres this duality of Neotokio and Civilaization advancement vs Nature theres even that Zoo were you then see lions held instead of being free in the wilderness, Terranigma did make a lasting impression on me, its an emotional ride and a fun game to play, I even uploaded a couple video tributes to it, this game is the definition of a Hidden gem, secured as one of my top 10 favorite games of all time

I replay it every couple of years, and listen to the music when I don't. like you say, it's just bittersweet and hauntingly beautiful. Arc is such a fun, and likeable character, and so are the others! the castle (and it's music!!) always gives me the chills. and walking around in Crysta feels like walking in a dreamed up version of your hometown - just bittersweet, filling you with sense of wanderlust but also making you want to hide there forever in fear of what's waiting for you outside. sorry for the rambling, it's late and the nostalgia got to me; thank you so much for this video!

Thank you for this very moving masterpiece of a retrospective to this incredible game. Terranigma was the most stand-out game of my childhood and I have always cited it as my favourite RPG of all time, but I've never come close to being able to as effectively put into words as to why, compared to how wildly successfully you have done so here. The way you have described the powerful themes and emotional resonance that Quintet achieved here I think beautifully explains why this game sticks out so starkly in my memory, more than any other game I've ever played. From my understanding of how memory works, the more distant a memory becomes, the more our brain sees the need to compress it and strip away details, often what we're left with is how something made us feel. This game is such an incredible journey full of incredibly powerful moments and the power of those feelings really stays with you, it's no surprise that no matter how many years pass, I can't forget how much this game made moved me. Thanks again for this beautiful tribute to what I would argue is the best RPG of a (console) generation.

Godamnit Mike. Nowadays I'm too busy and always watch videos from 1.5 to 2 times speed, pretty much no exceptions... until this pops up. I watched at regular speed to take in your opinions, the dev quotes and this masterpiece of a soundtrack with the accurate contemplation. Terranigma is an odd game. I heard it had an amazing story, and it also had some of the best pixel work I've seen, yet I was always weary, because I thought there was no way you could tell a good story with this game because... the font was too big. I clearly underestimated how well this game would tell it's story with visuals and music, transitions and events, pretty much unmatched for its time. When I finished it I paced around my room thinking of how great it was, what the ending meant and made me feel, and I started thinking that this game should be taught in schools. I think had I played this game as a kid I would have never killed an ant, never have thrown undivided trash outside the recycling bin. To understand plants and the animals, for the Earth to loose it's innocence once mankind originated and culminate all of this in a tale of growth, development, the cost of manipulating the ecosystem and mutual understanding and lack-thereof... I couldn't think a game could do all these things today, let alone a ARPG from the 90s. Terranigma is probably the single greatest example of "lightning in a bottle" in game history. And I think you captured that so well in this retrospective. Hats off to you, Resonant Ark. Can't wait to see what other amazing RPG you will tackle next. I came to think this video also has a fair shair of duality, the somber future of Quintet displayed by misty quotes from devs... yet also hilarious recorded game-play moments.... could that be METATEXT???? jk, but I really love this video and how well you organize your reviews. I just discovered your channel a week ago and I've been looking at all these classic rpg reviews and thinking wow what an amazing way to review something so nostalgic. I really appreciate the fact that you're trying to explain why games moved us so much back in the good old SNES and PlayStation days. It's not just nostalgia, it's a combination of many great factors combined like story, gameplay and absolutely one of the great aspects that you also take so much time to explain, the music. I'm one of those guys that never played Terranigma simply because it wasn't that well known to me. After seeing this review it's really interesting to see why the game was made and what the developers wanted to convey. Thanks for that. One last thing. After going through your huge library of reviews I noticed that Tales of Phantasia for the SNES wasn't in there. I actually saw a snippet of video in this video, when you were explaining the music. Nowadays I'm too busy with work of other games. I have beaten the game countless times when I was young. But about once a year I watch the full long play on KZfaq. As a movie it feels, as a nostalgic dream, like an experience that has changed my life...

Almost cried after watching this video. It was super nostalgia T_T..... In Thailand this game was only known by the name "Tenchi Souzou" and there is only a Japanese version to play. I play through this game cluelessly.. without understand anything about it, but still realize how "deep" and AMAZING it was. I love the village "Crystal Home" with something like bubbles floating around everywhere, and the music that remind me a place like home. I just know that this game is called "Terranigna" in English and now truely understand what the game is about. Thanks!!

Tomoyoshi Miyazaki and Masaya Hashimoto are also known for creating Nihon Falcom's flagship series Ys. They worked on the first 3 Ys games, if you're wondering. And I can see why they left after Ys 3, which feels too much like Falcom decided to interfere a lot when it comes to gameplay and story.

I can't say it in words how much I love this game, it's just my most favorite game in all time. Whenever I see a Terranigma Item which I don't own I try to get it x) I still miss the Australia Version x.x hell I even purchased vga graded sealed product of the game because I love it so much
