The Plateu of Leng is, to me, one of the most confusing things in Lovecraft's fiction.
@SandyofCthulhu
@SandyofCthulhu 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Because Lovecraft wanted to keep it mysterious and unclear exactly where or what it was. But of course if you want to use it in games, this presents a problem.

I always considered Leng to be a liminal bridge between our world and the Dreamlands, perhaps existing at several points simultaneously in space and time, a bit like the Lost Land from the Turok series.

The similarities between The Tcho Tcho and late surviving Homo non-Sapiens recently found in central/southeast Asia are interesting and tying the two together is an interesting direction that I do not know if anyone has proposed before. The Denisovans had genes that in modern humans code for high altitude low oxygen survival and others that code for survival in the extreme cold. All records of late surviving Homo non-Sapiens found in the Asia pacific region were incredibly short so people living in a similar region being slightly short makes sense, not exactly as the Homo Floresiensis and Homo Luzonensis I am referencing were likely short due to island dwarfism but it is close enough to a reasonable line to work for this science fiction. IDK I feel like it adds something to say they are not Homo Sapiens and have been living on and around the Plateau of Leng since before Homo Sapiens first arrived in the area.

I always viewed the Voormis from Clark Ashton Smith's Hyperborean Cycle stories in a similar light, merely a more simian or bestial offshoot of the main hominid line.

Thanks, Sandy; these are always great. I've always thought of the Tcho Tchos as basically like Human equivalents of the Drow. Their skill with biological manipulation makes me think of the Mi-Go... perhaps the Tcho Tchos could have had extensive contact with, and received some training from, the Fungi From Yuggoth? As an aside, before I ever heard the name pronounced, in my head I called them "the T'ko T'ko People." It wasn't until I read the _Delta Green: Countdown_ sourcebook, which had a chapter discussing the modern Tcho Tchos living in San Francisco and gave alternate names for them (like 'Chauchas") that I realized it was pronounced more like "Cho Cho."

It is funny you mention drow. Elves in general spent centuries acting like the Tcho Tchos in my home brew setting. They reside in a mirror universe and pop out on occasion to do things ranging from benign mischief with no real gain for themselves to serious socio-political upheaval with sinister end goals. Humanity is late medieval/early modern tech wise, they have primitive clumbsy guns. Elves are more stuck in late antiquity/early medieval technologically but by choice as they loath machines even as simple as windmills. They shoot lightning bolts from their fingers though and their luddite nature is no weakness with literal magic on their side.

A great video on the unjustly forgotten Tcho Tchos. On nitpick, I've read Klein's 'Black Man with a Horn' and I believe he stated that the Tcho Tchos in it came from Malaya. Or Malaysia. Or whatever it is now. BTW, talking Klein, if you've ever read his 'Children of the Kingdom', did the subterranean-dwellers in that story seem at all like the Tcho Tchos to you?

I have turned the Vanishing Conjurer into a campaign setting, and my next session will be the big finale. I was wondering where to go next, and the Tcho Tchos look like the solution. I'll put a ghetto of them in San Francisco somewhere. The generic modification angle is going to be really fun to work with.

I've read those stories too. Wellman once wrote how startled he was after doing the first few to have fans writing him and how he knew about these local legends of theirs just like his stories when they thought no one outside their community knew them. He said the really scary party was that he got several such letters from people who were strangers to each other.

The problem is that the 'new generation ' of Tcho Tcho are "out and proud.' The stars are aligning. in fact Lil' Songtong, a Tcho Tcho rapper, is gaing popularity among Malaysian and Indonesian poor and disaffected youth. Groups pressing for their rights have convinced local media that their status is unimportant as they are ' very few in number.' Groups like these and Young Innsmouth on the East Coast are being embraced as 'diverse and valuable.' Not surprised.

Sounds like the Tcho Tcho have a more grown-up and practical relationship with Reality than most humans. They secure the best future they can for themselves and their people. They might not be nice people, but they're still people, and they manage to live by their own priorities. It sounds a lot better than running through the streets screeching "The things I have seen!" or retreating into "a New Dark Age" or promiscuously jumping into the first tentacled maw which comes along. Rather like the ghouls that way. A Lesser Independent Race (to use your terminology) beats a display in the Krueger Supermarket. They can adapt themselves to the world and the world to them. They deal with the gods but, as Granny Weatherwax says "there's no call go go believing in 'em." They have things better figured out than we do, a lesson in facing up to the way things are rather than pretending they are the way we wish they were

@@georgekostaras Heh. Comes from my being part of an ethnic minority which was never in charge but always had to adapt to or flee whoever had the power. That and getting HPL as bedtime stories when I was six years old. As a species we are plastic and adaptable. If there's any hope in a Lovecraftian universe it's in facing up to Reality and adapting even if it stretches (or breaks) our current definition of "people"
@georgekostaras
@georgekostaras 2 жыл бұрын
@@toddellner5283 honestly you paint a sophisticated picture about the nature of Lovecraft and horror in general. And you do have a good point. We don't have elder gods to deal with but we do have racial prejudice, climate change and nuclear war to keep us up at night. Plus 50 years ago the idea of heart transplant broke peoples brains. So I guess in a way we're already breaking old definitions of "people." If I may say so, you're a rather clever fellow
